and today santa clara county is going to start this work. effort to try and get an accurate count or an estimate of the number of people who are unhoused living in the county. and this work is supposed to start this morning. volunteers are set to arrive any minute now. and then later, after the sun comes up, they will go out into the community and walk through areas and try to get an accurate count. now, not only is this count required by the federal government's department of housing and human services, it determines how much federal funding the county will get for services in the future. but it also helps local governments get an idea of how big the problem of homelessness is in their cities and counties, and then where and how to allocate resources to address it. now it comes just days after new federal numbers show that santa clara county has the largest homeless population of any bay area county. more than 9000 people were without permanent housing in last year's count. the count for to tally up the numbers for 2024 again starts this mor
