nbc bay area's sergio quintana has more on the bold plan. he wants the city to take a look at to address the problems on sixth street in the south of market district. on any given day, you can see some of san francisco's issues with drug use, drug dealing and mental health all out in the open. this is in supervisor matt dorsey's district. he's pressing city departments to take swift action here, just on the sixth street corridor. if we were to effect 100 arrests per night with an eye toward making those life saving, medically appropriate interventions, gettingeople into detox drug treatment. dorsey has sent a formal letter of inquiry to all city departments that are responsible for law enforcement, public safety and public health to ask what they would need to make his 100 arrests a night proposal a reality. he acknowledges there has been improvement on drug use and sales on several street corners in south of market and the neighboring tenderloin, but not on sixth street. supervisor dorsey says the issues on sixth street in his district have

here's nbc's sergio quintana. a small crew of emergency damage workers spent the morning piecing together a temporary frame and plywood door after a police suv crashed into the building at the corner of san bruno and paul avenues. it all happened just across the street from where martha gutierrez lives. she shared video with us showing what she saw out her apartment window. she says the police suv seemed to try to cut off a white sedan in the intersection during a chase. you can see the skid mark that's from the police suv as it skidded through the intersection and then careened into the side of the building. video from the scene also shows the damage done to the sfpd cruiser. we're told both officers in the suv were taken to a local hospital with non-life threatening injurs. gutierrez says after the crash, four people in the car that they were chasing jumped out and tried to get away. she watched as officers chase all four of them down. police say ahi se llevaron a los delinquents. gutierrez says the police did a

let's bring in our sergio quintana live along kirkham street right here. what's going on out there?so the there's a new installation here on kirkham street between ninth and 10th avenues. this is what it is. it is called the neck down. it is designed to squeeze opposing directions of traffic down to one lane to force them to slow down. you can see that's kind of what's happening here. t these cars are having to go through the middle there, and it kind of forces them to stop sometimes in the middle of the street so that they can figure out who's going to go first. now, this was installed back in october, but it's now starting to get more attention because more people are starting to talk about it, because they've been having to drive through it, i'm told. and actually, the sfmta also says that the reason why they installed it is because when this street was reopened to traffic through the pandemic, it was a slow street, but it was reopened to traffic. a lot of the neighbors say that there was just vehicles driving through here too fast. they thought it was very dangerous. so the sfmt

sergio quintana, nbc, bay area news. down south, firefighters are using every tool available to put down the hughes fire, managing to get a large portion of that fire contained today. the fire sparked yesterday morning near santa clarita. it's grown to over 10,000 acres, but crews managed to stop the forward spread last night. containment now at 24%. firefighters say overnight water drops made a huge difference in gaining that containment. meantime, crews were able to lilift some evacuation orders for parts of pacific palisades. this comes two weeks after that devastating palisades fire swept through the town into malibu. the fire is now 72% contained, and the eaton fire near pasadena is now 95% contained. new numbers show both fires destroyed over 16,000 structures. more relief money is heading to l.a. just over an hour ago, governor newsom signed a $2.5 billion fire relief package. the money will go to the state's emergency disaster response efforts, including evacuation shelters and cleaning up hazardous waste. state

our sergio quintana is live in the city. sergio, i know there's a lot of things happening out there this new year's day. how? security looking. yeah, well, one of the biggest events in the city that has happened for 25 years now is a block party called breakfast of champions. we had a pretty good conversation with the director of security for that event. he says that they do prepare for events like this because it is a block party. they have a pretty decent area of the city that is cordoned off, and so they do take precautions. he says his security team takes precautions to try to head off any kind of incident that might that might threaten the safety of the people within the cordon and also to respond should something like that happen. now, he also says that that's something that they regularly do. and even after news of what happened in new orleans reached his security team, they haven't been advised to change any kind of a security posture or any kind of make any kind of changes. so what they've simply been doing is runnin

our sergio quintana has been following the story all day for us. sergio, can you go ahead and start from the beginning? can you go out and tell us exactly what happened here? what are you learning? well, let's talk about this student's story. the story originated from a middle school student at visitacion valley middle school. she apparently told her administrators at that school that she was approached by an ice agent. she she is again. she's a student at visitacion valley middle school, and she told her administrators that she was approached by an immigration and customs enforcement agent on the bus. the agent asked her for her id and also where she's from. now that story then got relayed to parents by by a principal from a different school. and that's kind of what set this off across the city of san francisco. the police department got involved to try to verify this. it even got to city hall. ultimately, this afternoon, i was able to talk with an sfmta spokesperson who says they reviewed hours of video from aboard their route 92 busses, where the
