the virginia assembly had voted against secession.t was going to remain a loyal state to the united states. but after lincoln called up those 75,000 troops, that really allowed the hotheads in virginia to say, wow, we are going to be attacked by these 75,000 yankees. we had better turn to president davis and see if he would defend us from these yankees, and that is what they did. they announced secession and without asking davis, they seceded and said it was outrageous that the president of the united states was calling up this huge army and basically that they would be trampled upon . so they seceded and what is interesting to me as an historian is that jefferson davis did not actually i don't think want them to secede. he would have preferred virginia to remain rather like kentucky, a kind of neutral middle. after all, they were called middle states, border states. so from davis plus point of view in terms of his strategy, it was easier to imagine defending this vast expanse of southern states of the deep south, which very difficult

in virginia, election day was the first day of the next campaign.hat ends on tuesday with a special election for senate where democrats currently hold the majority. there is also a special election in the state house. it is a hard work to knock on doors and have people vote for you in the wake of an election -- presidential election year. but it is oh so very important. and i'll be honest, i am very biased because i once worked in the virginia house of delegates. the republican governor is term limited so democrats have a real chance of winning the governor's race in november but the success of the democratic government in virginia starts with winning these special elections and keeping control of the state legislature. joining us now, two running for the senate. both are running to represent parts of loudoun county outside of washington, d.c.. thank you both for joining me today. can we start with the stakes of this race. it is my understanding that losses in either of these two seats would result in potentially republican control or a power-sharin

no problem, james madison wrote the virginia declaration or virginia resolution, and it was more moderate than jefferson's draft and their their friends shared it with jefferson and jefferson inserted a clause that said that the states could declare laws to be null and void. they didn't tell madison that they had inserted this clause and then send it to the virginia legislature to pass. it was very contentious and the language leaked and made its way north and the federalists howled that basically the southerners were trying to start a civil war, were trying to secede. when madison learned of this clause, he asked that it be removed. and so the final version does not include the words null and void. however, the language was now in the political lexicon, and so several years later, when the federalists are talking about maybe seceding during the war of 1812 and many decades later, when southerners start to talk about secession, they're using this language that was first introduced by jefferson into the political dialog and i know this is a book about john adams, but one of the best quotes
