chances for rain over the next couple days as a high pressure system is sitting directly over the bay area. it's really interesting. you can see the high pressure just by the lack of rain. look at the curve around that area of high pressure across the west coast of the united states. it's keeping it away from us until friday. friday is going to be a much better potential of seeing a little activity, but look at the location. it's across the northern parts of california, so northern half of the bay area definitely seeing better possible of a little bit more wetting rainfall friday, but it's not just friday, into saturday, sunday, monday, tuesday, and even wednesday. we are looking at multiple rounds of rain on the way. so likely going to be seeing this wet pattern sticking around into early next week. that is really great news. it's not just a one and done and most of us at least in the north bay will get in on it. south bay communities on friday and saturday, you might be left in the dust as again, it's going to be a northern system that is going to be making its way across the bay area. r

here's nbc bay area's robert honda. san jose and oakland firefighters have already been applying public pressure to get their cities to hire more help. the l.a. county fires are giving them another chance to make their case. san jose and oakland say the fires down south are a good reminder of what can happen here due to the similar urban wildland mix and the low number of firefighters for the population. i think the bottom line is numbers don't lie. according to staffing numbers compiled by the san jose fire department and the bay area news group in los angeles, there is nearly one firefighter per 1000 residents, and while firefighters there complain about those figures, san jose is actually lower, hovering between 0.67 to 0.75, while oakland has just over one firefighter per 1000 people. the national average tops one and a half. the san jose firefighters union says it will be pushing the city to boost their budget because they believe their staffing and benefits have fallen behind in comparison to san francisco. also j

kris sanchez, nbc, bay area news. all right, chris, thank you. now to our making it in the bay series. the latest numbers are out on rent. and believe it or not, it's actually the lowest it's been in three years. that's the national number. but what are we looking at when it comes to the bay area numbers? let's bring in our business and tech reporter scott budman. okay, scott, what's it looking like? what are the numbers? yeah, audrey, as you can imagine, the bay area numbers are higher than the national numbers. in fact, about twice as high. good news, national number. and this is a number from redfin. they track housing and they s you typically need about $63,000 a year in income. if you want to rent a typical one bedroom apartment that literally doubles here in silicon valley, about 126,000. the interesting thing about the cost coming down is it shows while income is remaining steady and wages even rising a bit. we talk about that a lot. there is at least more inventory when it comes to apartments. so many cities, including here in the bay area

bay. we'll zoom in on the areas that will see the coldest temperatures. the areas here in purple, much of the lower elevations of sonoma county, marin county and napa county will see temperatures tomorrow morning in the upper 20s to low 30s. that's from midnight to about 10 a.m. tomorrow, so bundle up as you head outside. it's going to hit you in the face as you head outside of those temperatures, dropping into the 20s and low 30s areas that might have their sprinklers run at night. be careful. that could be icy in the morning. now, by lunchtime, with the sunny skies, temperatures recover pretty well. we climb back into the low 60s around san jose and likely mid to upper 60s around downtown san jose, and even some 60s closer to san francisco and oakland. but as we talked about weekend changes just around the corner, cooler and breezy and even a chance we may begin to see some showers entering the forecast and perhaps much needed rain for southern california coming up tonight at five. jeff, we have a full look at these changes ahead in that 7-day forecast

i mean, this is feeling more like early spring across the bay area then winter right now 71 here in morgan hill, 67 in concord, 69 in napa and mid 60s san francisco to half moon bay. we're on a steady trend like this through friday's forecast. then by the time we get to this weekend, we are going to see a pretty big drop in temperatures. we may only stay in the 50s across the inland valleys once we head into saturday and sunday from this system dropping down from the north. so even though we have a system here, it's not really tapping into a strong amount of pacific moisture. if this system here was developing in the pacific, we would certainly be into much higher totals, but it's just moving over the land. so it's just really hard for this to produce heavy, heavy rainfall. nonetheless, we'll see the chance here as we head into saturday's forecast, but it's only minimal right now. the forecast models are kind of back and forth on this a little bit, but just looks like trace amounts here for most of california on saturday. so again, only a spotty chance for us on saturday's forecast as we h

a decent chance of showers for most of the bay area on friday. the heaviest and steadiest rain is going to fall north of the golden gate. north bay is going to pick up more than every other part of the bay area before south, not as substantial both friday and friday night chance. then continuing chance of showers saturday and sunday. then everybody will get in on the action monday and tuesday. that time frame is contained within the six to ten- day outlook, a strong chance of wetter than normal conditions as everybody gets in on the action monday and tuesday. beyond that, the first half of february looks like we are going to get back into a more typical winter weather pattern for the bay area. we're tracking rain chances day by day as we head through the next several days. the seven-day forecast which has a couple of dry days still to go. wednesday and thursday. then the showers move in on friday. showers likely for most of the bay area. then they're possible saturday and sunday. the best chance is going to be for the north bay. everybody else is

>> we are likely to see rain in parts of the bay area this weekend, a better chance for the entire bay area just beyond the scope of the seven-day forecast, but things are trending in a better direction to get some much needed rainfall as we head into early february. let's look at futurecast, big picture perspective, thursday through wednesday next week, and a parade of systems will send a good chance of showers to the north coast, heavier rainfall there, with rain and snow making its way into the pacific northwest. in terms of the area of wide rain, likely tuesday and wednesday next week for the entire bay area to get in on the action. we'll take a closer look momentarily. first, let's look outside and see what we're dealing with this monday evening, nice start to the workweek today and still clear skies now, better air quality thanks to the change in air mass that kicked in over the weekend of temperatures now, 50s and 60s, 55 degrees in san francisco to 60 degrees in concord, san jose, and santa rosa, but with clear skies and light winds and a light offshore wind pushing the marine

jocelyn moran, nbc, bay area news. as president trump ramps up efforts to carry out his campaign promises of mass deportations. san francisco is taking a stand. tomorrow, city leaders will gather on the steps of city hall to reassure migrants that san francisco will not cooperate with federal agents, targeting them at home, work or school. nbc bay area's thom jensen reports. ice on larkin. a viewer shared this vio of what he said were ice agents in san francisco sunday, and the leader of a local janitors union says agents appeared at multiple buildings friday. we were caught off guard in the sense that the administration didn't announce they were coming to san francisco, but we were prepared and exercising our rights. olga miranda says the agents were turned away from the offices without detaining workers, because they didn't have arrest or search warrants on them. so we're telling our members power, not panic. exercise our rights. city leaders are still gathering information about exactly what happened at those office

higher rainfall totals until this weather system starts to kick into gear and then push into the bay area on tuesday. so during that time, a l of our models are showing very high amounts of rainfall for the north bay. this is a similar setup that we had back in december, where the north bay got all the rain. the rest of the bay area was very dry. it looks like we could see that once again with a quarter inch of rain or less from san francisco on southward. but the pinks, the whites, that's just off the charts there. with the rainfall, we may possibly see anywhere from 3 to 6in of rainfall from santa rosa on northward. that willlso bring in more sierra snow for the northernierra. the southern sierra needs a lot of work to catch up to normal. it looks like we're going to also see some additional snowfall into the weekend, with anywhere from about four to possibly 15in of snow. kingvale getting some of the higher snowfall totals. so we are going to see things change over the next few days, but at least for at least today through thursday, we're sunny with more of the same temperatures. marcu

no cloud cover really anywhere close to the bay area, a few clouds up to our north. all pattern keeping us dry has persisted over the past several weeks. we're on pace to have our third dryest january on record just because the area of high pressure that's kept us dry steering the storm track north has been locked in place. every once in a while it drifts a little closer, squeezes the atmosphere over the west coast and results in gusty offshore winds. we had those today. they're starting to die down, but it's a bigger concern for southern california. we'll talk more about that a little later on. first let's look where our temperatures stand. we have cloud-free skies across the bay area right now, beautiful post sunset sky looking towards the golden gate from salesforce tower, still in the 60s, 10 to 20 degrees warmer today than yesterday. 57 degrees is the cool spot now in livermore, not that cool and not even a hint of fog thanks to the offshore winds that are going to be weakening as we head through the rest of tonight. that's going to have an impact on how our temp

not that much longer for the bay area. the bigger concern isagain southern california where the offshore winds resulting in critical fire weather conditions once again. we'll look at the big picture and turn on the wind arrows. it is another offshore wind event as the atmosphere gets squeezed between a big hill of air camped off out the coast and a storm system making its way through the great basin. the offshore wind is of primary concern in southern california the next few days. they have red flag warnings in effect until tomorrow, fire weather watches continuing beyond that into thursday. it's not the only active weather across the country. let's go farther east and all the pink and purple are winter weather advisories and winter storm warnings in effect all the way down to the gulf coast. this is unusual. some of these spots haven't been under these types of advisories in over ten years. it's an unusually cold air mass that's driven all the way to the south resulting in snow that is going to fall in places like houston

sergio quintana, nbc, bay area news. down south, firefighters are using every tool available to put down the hughes fire, managing to get a large portion of that fire contained today. the fire sparked yesterday morning near santa clarita. it's grown to over 10,000 acres, but crews managed to stop the forward spread last night. containment now at 24%. firefighters say overnight water drops made a huge difference in gaining that containment. meantime, crews were able to lilift some evacuation orders for parts of pacific palisades. this comes two weeks after that devastating palisades fire swept through the town into malibu. the fire is now 72% contained, and the eaton fire near pasadena is now 95% contained. new numbers show both fires destroyed over 16,000 structures. more relief money is heading to l.a. just over an hour ago, governor newsom signed a $2.5 billion fire relief package. the money will go to the state's emergency disaster response efforts, including evacuation shelters and cleaning up hazardous waste. state

then we are turning our attention to this cluster of clouds that's eventually going to bring the bay area some rain going toward the end of the week. right now we are seeing the showers continue in some of those burn scar areas across southern california. we're looking out for that possibility that there could be some more movement of the land because of that wet weather. but looking at our clear skies, we have temperatures in the low to mid 50s. we are once again headed for the low 60s for this afternoon for much of the bay area, and then we are going to be dry throughout the week as our weather pattern repeats over the next several days. but then we're going to see that rain coming back on friday into saturday. it doesn't look like a significant storm for us. we're kind of on the outer fringes of that, but we are going to see the scattered showers continue into the weekend and then taper off on sunday into monday. so here's how much rain we're expecting. it's going to be in these areas in red and pink. that's about one to possibly two inches of rainfall. and then notice how those rainfa

damian trujillo nbc, bay area news. a federal judge has blocked president trump's executive order on birthright citizenship, calling it blatantly unconstitutional. the temporary restraining order sought by arizona, illinois, oregon and washington was the first to get a hearing before a judge, and it applies nationally for other lawsuits challenging that executive order have also been filed by california and 21 other states, along with a number of immigrant rights groups. the judge who granted the restraining order was appointed by reagan in 1981. now that order blocks federal agencies from implementing the president's executive order while the case is under review. it's an emotional milestone in half moon bay. today was the beginning of a two day remembrance for the horrific shooting rampage. it happened exactly two years ago, january 23rd of 2023. a farm worker shot and killed seven coworkers at two different farms where he worked. now, half moon bay is trying to figure out the best way the best memorial to honor those
