the west oakland bart station.what the stolen ones look like. the four bronze plates within that plaque ripped out of the sidewalk. the west coast blues society, a bay area nonprofit commission, created this display as part of an oakland music walk of fame going back to 2015. that's when it was first installed. it was a way to celebrate a part of oakland's cultural history back in the world war two era, and in the decades afterwards, seventh street in west oakland was known as the harlem of the west. it had a vibrant commercial and entertainment district of black owned businesses, world famous music clubs, theaters, and performance venues lined the streets. musicians from etta james and b.b. king to later aretha franklin performed at those clubs. now, the walk of fame display was an important way to highlight that part of oakland's past. the director of the west coast blues society, which installed that display, says he's not sure exactly when these 40 name plates were stolen. it may have been weeks or even months
