that's the american airlines flight. helicopter traffic is now restricted in that d.c. area there near reagan national. is that surprising? is that long overdue? are we going to go kind of back to normal in a few weeks? we'll have to see what the causation is here. whether the helicopter complied with their restrictions, and a review of all the safety rules that the helicopters operate under. there's a history here of near misses, as you've discovered 16 of them over the last 20 years or so. and that's just the ones that are reported. yeah. you're talking about our investigative unit in chicago. nbc found those 16 complaints about clolose cals at reagan national since 2006, 16, in about 20 years. is that a high number or what do you think? well, i think that's a low number, but those are the actual written reports that were filed by crews. those aren't verbal reports or comments made to the air traffic control folks who said, oh no, that was nothing. the way things have been treated in the last few years is if a pilot reports a near-miss, it's considered a near-miss. th

pitch to on the part of the american airlines flight, essentially them trying in that last second to pull up. >> well, that's right. and there really wouldn't have been a lot of opportunity for for the aircraft to see and avoid the helicopter. and they couldn't do that anyway. they were under positive air traffic control. they were on a controlled descent. they must stay right on their glideslope. they must stay at their altitude and they must line up with the runway. and so and especially once they had turned in to runway 33, they would be making a left hand turn. the helicopter was coming in from the right. so it didn't surprise me that they did not see it until literally, you know, the last second of the crash. but, you know, a passenger, a commercial passenger service jet just can't climb that fast. i mean, let's face it, i mean, the a rocket couldn't climb that fast. a fighter jet couldn't. but they did see them at the very last second. and that was revealed today. but with their controlled approach and, and all of the data that they gave us, it sounded like the aircraft was exa

the american airlines plane was carrying 64 passengers and crew, flying from wichita, kansas, when it a black hawk helicopter with three soldiers on board and they crashed into the potomac river. it is the deadliest air accident in the u.s. and more than 20 years in the first fatal crash involving a commercial airline since 2009. investigators have recovered flight data recorders from the wreckage as they continue their search for the people killed in the crash. officials say more than 301st responders used sonar scans to find bodies overnight. the fire chief and says the aircraft fuselage need to be removed from the river before more bodies can be found. >> we have recovered 41 sets of remains. those victims have been positively identified. next of kin notifications have been made to 18 families. going forward with this operation, search teams will continue to work the site. our dive teams are working in targeted areas. additional coast guard assets will arrive this afternoon. salvage crews have begun to arrive on the scene. they are assessing the work that will be needed to recover

here is what we know at this hour about that collision of an american airlines plane and a military helicopter. 41 bodies have now been recovered from the waters of the potomac, and divers are continuing to search those icy waters for others. the blackhawks voice recorder has been found, and there is no damage to that. one of the plane's black boxes has water intrusion, though, which we are told is a common issue. meantime, the faa has indefinitely suspended helicopter routes near reagan national airport. and president trump tonight is doubling down on his baseless claims that dui caused this crash. we'll have more on that in a moment. but first, cnn's danny freeman joins us live from reagan airport with more on this investigation. danny, there are some new details that we're learning about the flight path of the helicopter and what was going on there. >> abby, the flight path of the helicopter has been one of the biggest questions for the past 24 hours, certainly, but also since this crash happened. and we may be closer to getting some answers about that flight path after these developments.
