in san jose, marianne favro nbc, bay area news. well, new at six. attorney general rob bonta is bowing out of the race for california governor. speculation for bonta has been brewing since last couple of years, when he said he was considering a gubernatorial run, but now he's changed his mind. he sent an email to his supporters today. it confirmed he'll run for reelection as the state attorney general to continue fighting president trump's policies in court. bonta told politico he would back former vice president kamala harris if she joins the race for california governor. at least 30 people have already filed to run as governor newsom. terms out next year. that includes lieutenant governor eleni kounalakis, former controller betty yee and superintendent of schools tony thurmond. former congresswoman katie porter is also specuted to be a possible favorite in the race. a judge has temporarily blocked the trump administration's plan to freeze trillions of dollars in federal funding, but dozens of head start programs say they can't access their money.

ian cull, nbc, bay area news. italy is preparing to host the winter olympics for the first time in two decades, and we are getting a sneak peek at the games newest mascots. meet tina and milo. their names come from the two host cities. milo from milan and tina from cortina. they're stoats. that's a type of weasel. the light coated one is tina, representing the winter olympic games, and her brother milo is the paralympic mascot and was born without a leg. mascots have been a key part of the game since 1968, but for the first time ever, the mascots and the logo were voted on by the people of italy, and the designs were all drawn by italian students. when you're thinking about olympic games, there's always a second place in the olympic games. and so one of the two characters of the two flowers of the second place, we transformed into secondary characters. so it was it was a nice story also for the kids to tell them, you know, yes, it was a second place, but your your design is still become part of the mascot world. t

alyssa goard, nbc, bay area news. and as a prize trip to the all-star game led to a big cash grab for one fan from oakland, 18 year old jaron barajas was called down to the court to face off against milwaukee bucks star and oakland native damian damian lillard. lillard needed to shoot three three pointers before jaylen hit the first one at the buzzer. jaron banked a three pointer in and he won $100,000 in the process. and to compete against damian lillard was also pretty cool. and then after i made the shot, shaq and kenny all gave me a hug. and then i saw curry at the end too, which was pretty cool. that's awesome. goodness. that's incredible. jaron didn't even know he was going to the game until yesterday. his dad surprised him with tickets while at his grandfather's 80th birthday. jaron is currently a freshman at los medanos college in pittsburg. he says he plans to use the money to pay for college and help his family out. so congrats to jaron. now, while jaron shot was a highlight of the night, he wasn't the star

in san francisco, sergio quintana, nbc, bay area news. while the recovery in southern california is certainly slow and daunting, but for the firstime since the devastating palisades fire, a stretch of the pacific coast highway is reopened to traffic today. cars were once again rolling on a stretch ofch, the famed highway between mcclure tunnel and carbon beach. however, only one lane is open in each direction, and cars are limited to 25 miles an hour. so if you're using the highway and you want to go back to a burned portion of the palisades, you have to have an access pass to enter the neighborhood. no word on when pch will fully reopen, and that is such a mainstay of southern california pch. i mean, it's so, but it's good to at least it's rolling. so they're going to be impacted by some of this rain as well right? yeah. this is going to make it down there. it doesn't look nearly as heavy as what we're getting. but of course anytime they get rain in southern california they got to closely watch it back here across the bay area. we are ta

joselyn moran, nbc, bay area news.n update now to a gruesome and high profile murder in santa cruz. the man convicted in juvenile court of killing an eight-year-old girl, maddie middleton, will not be released from custody. there he is today. adrian gonzalez, who was 15 when he kidnaped, raped and killed maddie before leaving her body in a dumpster at the apartment complex where they both lived in 2015. he pleaded guilty in 2021 and was eligible for release after turning 25. today, jurors decided unanimously that gonzalez remains a physical danger to the public and should remain incarcerated for another two years. decades spent searching for a killer. and tonight, police may have solved the cold case murder of a hiker in berkeley. police found the body of maria wiedorfer in tilden regional park in 1990 after 35 years. police today named john lipari as the killer, saying he strangled and sexually assaulted the 32 year old. lipari lived in martinez at the time of the attack, but then moved to oregon. officers declared li

sergio quintana, nbc, bay area news. san francisco mayor daniel lurie spent much of his day at the capitol in sacramento. he met with state leaders about san francisco's future. the focus, he says, is making the city safer, cleaner and more prosperous. lurie is also seeking stopgap funding to keep muni, bart and caltrain running. to support the city's economic recovery, the mayor says he is pushing for more state support. san jose is facing a potential $60 million shortfall next year in its budget, amid lagging sales tax revenue and increased costs. mayor matt mahan says there are a number of avenues the city could choose to save money without letting people go. that includes deferring planning work, delaying the opening of the new police training center, and reducing the number of vacant positions. budget talks kick off tomorrow. all right. is it a new solution for homelessness or a new punishment for people trying to help the unsheltered? that's the debate in a new proposal in fremont, which is triggering tonight. the

ian cull, nbc, bay area news.ore possible school closures in the south bay, this time at franklin-mckinley school district in san jose. last month, the school consolidation advisory committee recommended three schools. three schools closed at the end of the year. los arboles academy, ramblewood elementary, and mckinley elementary. the board of education will hear the recommendation at a special board meeting tomorrow at bridges academy. a public hearing will also be held. many parents are planning to rally before the hearing. the board will make its final decision next week. ayesha curry is closing her oakland sweet july storefront. the company posted online that it was prioritizing the safety of prons and staff. storefront first opened in 2021, and there was a break in in 2022. no arrests were ever made. the flagship store will shut its doors for good february 9th. sweet july will continue to operate online. the brand says it's also planning a skincare pop up at the valley fair mall in santa clara. sfmta is tryin
