candice nguyen: good evening and thanks for joining us. i'm candice nguyen. since the palisades fire broke out, we have heard about hydrants running dry, leaving fire crews helpless. governor gavin newsom is calling for an investigation into the water supply in la, whatever problems that probe finds. our own investigative reporter, jaxon van derbeken spoke with experts who say the system was never designed to deliver enough water fast enough to fight so many fires at once. male: he doesn't have any water. jaxon van derbeken: this san francisco fire crew knows firsthand what it's like to watch their hoses run dry as they're trying to save homes and other buildings in pacific palisades. dozens of fire crews ran into the same problem. male: it's not a consistent pressure. jaxon: but experts tell us there was initially enough water to go around until the hydrants started failing from a lack of pressure. the tanks briefly ran dry, water officials say, but were refilled. male: so it looks like he's starting to get more pressure now, but it's, uh-- jaxon: it's still

investigative reporter candice nguyen joins us now. she actually checked in with bay area head start programs to see if they've been impacted. would you come up with candice? yeah, that's right. raj. according to nbc news, the white house said head start programs should not be impacted by any funding freezes. still, more than 45 programs serving 20,000 students nationwide have experienced funding delays this week, according to the national head start association. so i called around to different bay area head start programs today. kari gutierrez is with the nonprofit unity council. this is video from their website. unity council has head start programs both in oakland and in concord. she tells me many local organizations experienced a one day funding freeze that did not impact their head start programs, but created a huge panic. they have since regained access to that money, but she says her organization and others are now scrambling to look for other sources in case federal funds, for whatever reason, are held up. if the trump administr

candice nguyen, nbc bay area. we investigate. thank you. candice. one person is dead after a fire broke out in an oakland warehouse this morning. we want to show you video from nbc bay area. sky ranger taken of the scene. the two alarm fire broke out around six this morning on russet street. more than 40 firefighters battled the flames and prevented it from spreading to nearby buildings. crews did put it out within an hour, but during the search of the building, firefighters found one person dead. the cause of this fire remains under investigation. well, are there bad chemicals in our water supply? santa clara county is suing more than a dozen companies for exposing people to so-called toxic forever chemicals. lawyers claim the companies have sparked an environmental and health crisis. here's nbc's ian cull. santa clara county joins a growing list of groups suing the makers of pfos, highly toxic environmental contaminants it says are circulating in county water supplies. they're known as forever chemicals because they don't degrade. they're found in

investigative reporter candice nguyen is with us. you talked about this a few months ago with one student. now it's grown to three. perhaps there's more down the road. why is getting a diploma high school diploma a bad thing? usually we celebrate that. yeah, we usually celebrate it. well, first of all, a diploma should always reflect the education level of that student. some of these students say that wasn't the case for them. and when they receive that diploma improperly in their opinions, it essentially kicked them out of the special ed system. they said after that diploma, the county told them, you are no longer eligible for that free county covered adult transition schooling that they were relying on because college isn't an option, and this is a service that public schools are obligated to provide. qualifying special ed students up until the age of 21. okay, but if they get the diploma, they're off the hook, so to speak. financially they're out. yea okay. are the programs short staffed? what's the what's the reasoning? is it a f

investigative reporter candice nguyen is with us.f all, let's just start with how many immigrants here in the bay area? i'm one of them, by the way. and how many are undocumented? yeah, i spent the day looking at studies, talking to different research groups. more than 30% of the bay area population is made up of immigrants, meaning people who were not originally born in the u.s. and the migration policy institute tells me they estimate about 471,000 of those people are undocumented as of 2022. you can see the breakdown here in the bay area. and then when you look at just santa clara county alone, that number actually increases a great deal. so 40% of the population in santa clara county are immigrants. yeah. that's big. so just to be clear, 470 undocumented. what was the overall immigration population of immigrants? about 30% of the bay area total is immigrants. and about a half a million are undocumented, is what you're saying? those are big numbers. big numbers. how does this compare to the bay area compared with other parts of th
