tom costello joins us live with some new reporting. tom, good evening. >> reporter: tom, this happened at 2:45 p.m. in toronto. the response from firefighters immediate. the airport was closed for several hours, just opening now. but amazingly, everybody got out of this plane alive. on the runway in toronto, a terrifying end for delta flight 4819. >> our plane crashed. it's upside down. >> reporter: lying upside down on the runway, an endeavor air regional jet had just arrived from minneapolis in gusty winds when something went terribly wrong. as thick black smoke poured from the plane, firefighters smothered the scene in fog. the right wing ripped off, the fuselage bearing what appear to be skid or soot marks. >> everything, drop it! come on! >> reporter: all 80 people on board managed to escape through the emergency exits. >> i was walking and i could see crj that is possibly crashed on the airport. the airplane flipped. >> reporter: 18 people injured and transported to area hospitals, including two airlifted to trauma centers, one c

tom costello is correct in that the approach looks very normal. what doesn't look normal is the how the airplane actually touches down. it's pretty firm, and a couple of passengers have been interviewed and said that the airplane hit the ground with a pretty good force. investigators are going to look at that. that is a recorded parameter on the digital flight data recorder. so they'll know exactly how hard the airplane touched down. and that may be one of the keys into understanding why that right wing broke away from the aircraft. the initial fire was because that fuel out of that wing was vaporized. and as the airplane skidded along, it created an ignition. the crash, the airport fire, rescue people. they were right there. and they are in part why the evacuation was so successful and the training of the crew. all of these things came together to get those 80 people off of that airplane. >> and as we wait to hear from the toronto pearson president and ceo, deborah flint is who we expect to show up at that podium that we showed you earlier. but a
