and listen, i agree. >> with dan. >> crenshaw that there needs to be reform in nato.but this isn't really about that. this is about our relationship with an authoritarian government. and think about the things that trump has said. i mean, first of all, he says, of course, he says russia wants to stop the fighting. well, of course they do. they want to stop it right now and keep what they've taken. they've they've taken 20% of a sovereign territory. number two, they're saying that trump says that ukrainians may be russians someday. number three, he says russian russia fought for that land and lost a lot of soldiers. as if that's a rationale for them keeping what they took. i mean, that's just that's an astonishing thing to say. so. so, yes, you're right. for republicans like me who crossed the bridge with george w. bush and and work with john mccain, what's happening right now in terms of our relationship with russia is really quite shocking. >> but i guess to play devil's advocate here, i mean, look, the war in ukraine has been going on for now, what, three years now?

spoke to two lawmakers earlier from munich, including house intelligence committee republican dan crenshaw. we asked him about president zelenskyy's views regarding what's needed in a potential peace deal. >> i understand that he has asked not just for continued military support now, but security assurances in the event of a peace deal. what can you tell him about what to expect from america? >> well, i just came from a lunch where general kellogg spoke, he is the special envoy leading this effort to establish peace, and he's very clear that the kind of peace we are talking about is a lasting peace, which of course involves security assurances. part of that process is figuring out exactly what that means. even the ukrainians are talking about what that means. there is a variety of options, per se. i think the europeans have to play a huge role in that. one of the things that gets talked about a lot is european forces actually acting as a peacekeeping force. the ukrainians clearly have a seat at the table and then the united states will be the intermediary as we try to establish a peace dea

i saw dan crenshaw say it quite similar on the air in the last couple of days. is that true? i mean, given his public statements now, his exclusion of ukraine from the talks and even more broadly from that, him telling europe this is your problem, right? >> yes. >> is that actually a backstop? >> you know, look, members of congress are going to have their hopes and their dreams. chairman wicker, as well, basically said he stands with ukraine. they're going to have to get that message across to the white house, because right now it's free sailing for donald trump and for this white house. we might see him meet with vladimir putin within days, and that will certainly shake things up here. but what do we getting out of this? you know, this is reminiscent to me, jim, of the afghanistan negotiations, where basically president trump cut a deal with our adversary with the taliban without having our ally, the afghan government, at the table. we gave up. we let 5000 taliban terrorists out, set the table for a destruction of afghanistan, that disastrous withdrawal, which they always wa
