for slashing funds to public health research funding. the new lawsuit is against the national institute of health policy to lower the maximum, quote, indirect cost rate that research institutions can charge the government. cnn's rene marsh joins us now. rene, tell us more about the lawsuit and why researchers say the funding cuts would be devastating for their research. >> so. >> phil. >> the nih. >> is saying that this these cuts could essentially save the agency some $4 billion annually. but the medical and scientific research community are saying that the cost could actually be well beyond just dollars and cents. what they're saying is that this could essentially mean that americans are waiting much longer for cures for diseases and sicknesses, because this will be devastating to research that's already underway and quite disruptive. so last week, let's take a step back. the nih. they issued this guidance document stating that all indirect cost rates for its grants would be reduced to 15%. that would be for existing grants and new grants. um, and again, this was a document that came out last week and it went into effect today. keep in mi

research director for the centre for migration control. i've got kwasi kwarteng, former conservative member of parliament and chancellor, the exchequer, with me and laurie laybourne, associate fellow at the institute for public policyrch. good evening gentlemen. rob, am i right? is mass migration making us poor? i mean, clearly there are other factors with the economy, but it does seem to me, when i read out that number since the end of 2022, it's coincided with record numbers of net migration into our country. >> yeah. and i think we have to look really at the type of migration that we have been seeing, especially in the last 20 or so years. and even in the last five years, we've seen a real, real escalation towards this low skilled, low wage immigration. in 2023, 70% of those coming into the country on a skilled worker visa. so not even including dependants and those on student visas were earning less than was actually needed for them to be making a net fiscal benefit and paying more into the treasury than they actually take out in terms of the amount that's having to be invested to increase the capital stock and maintain the roads, and increase the police force and increase the police force and the health servic
