i'm jana katsuyama. let's get right to our top stories tonight at 11. governor gavin newsom signed legislation today authorizing $50 million to fight legal battles against the trump administration. the bill gives the california department of justice $25 million to bolster the state's legal defense against any actions by the new administration. the other $25 million is slated to go to nonprofits to provide immigration related legal services. there is growing concern tonight about the spread of avian flu. san mateo county health officials say two cases of bird flu were detected in domestic animals, first in a backyard poultry flock, and the most recent one involved a stray cat in half moon bay. ultimately, the cat had to be euthanized. so did the backyard flock, which was located in the city of san mateo. authorities say the cases are unrelated. today marks one month since the start of the deadly palisades and eaton fires sparked in los angeles county. the devastating fires killed 29 people combined and destroyed about 18,000 structures. just this week, t

i'm jana katsuyama. >> and i'm alex savage. this crash comes just two days after that midair collision in the washington, dc area that killed 67 people. investigators say it was a medical transport jet that went down in philadelphia tonight. it was carrying a child patient. her mother and four crew members. the jet's operator, jet rescue air ambulance, says that tonight it cannot confirm any survivors. the plane came crashing down shortly after takeoff and went into a residential neighborhood near a shopping mall. authorities said they can't confirm the number of injuries on the ground. emergency crews rushed to the scene where the crash set homes on fire and left a trail of debris. >> our fire, our e.m.s, our police department, they have been here working vigorously to ensure that we get this perimeter and the surrounding area blocked off to ensure that we make public safety and health our number one priority. >> and this crash happened less than three miles from northeast philadelphia airport. it happened around 6:00 tonight.

in san rafael, jana katsuyama, ktvu fox two news. >> after 35 years of rape and murder, cold case in the east bay has been solved. officials today named john perry of oregon as the man who raped and strangled maria jane widenhofer in 1990, in tilden park in contra costa county. she was jogging alone when she was attacked. perry died of a self-inflicted gunshot last november in oregon. east bay regional park district police detectives say his dna was found on hofer's body. perry, who lived in martinez at the time of the killing, became the primary suspect last year. >> holding the person accountable that took maria from her family. justice may have been delayed, but thanks the hard work of our detectives and our federal partners. justice has been served. >> in 2017, detectives put out a possible image of a suspect. investigators determined he laid in wait on a bench right near the entrance to the tilden park trail before attacking widenhofer. so far, he has not been linked to any other crimes. new at six. the san francisco department of public health says it is continuing to see a dec

i'm jana katsuyama. we begin tonight with the weather. another round of wet rain is moving through the bay area tonight, as you can see. and already it is causing problems and safety concerns in the north bay. a large tree fell and damaged an elementary school today. the santa rosa fire department posted this video of a tree that toppled at steele lane elementary school. fire crews say the tree fell this morning at about 11:30 a.m. fortunately, nobody was hurt, but the tree did cause damage to a building at the school. the city of santa rosa says it is offering support to the school while the cleanup is underway. and in san francisco, the rain and wind gusts have prompted several parks to close. stern grove and pine lake both closed at 3:00 this afternoon. the parks department says they plan to keep both sites closed until their staff can conduct safety inspections. the parks department says that people should be on the lookout at other parks, as strong wind gusts can bring down limbs and cause even healthy trees to topple. and with that,
