[gavel] chair grassley: good morning. today's markup will be brief. so i'll get right down to business. on our agenda we've got three administrative committee matters. and one nomination listed. the minority as well as myself has exercised their right and my right under the committee rules to hold over the nomination of kash patel to be director of the f.b.i. so that nomination is held over. before we turn to administrative matters, i'd like to point out that committee democrats are establishing a double standard by forcing us to meet this morning. last congress republicans routinely required the committee to meet in person -- did not require the committee to meet in person just to hold over nominations. republicans extended this courtesy at least 17 times last congress, even when very controversial nominees were on the agenda. hen very controversial nominees were on the agenda. but now that

lifetime appointments, this appointment of the of the fbi is one of the most serious of the senate judiciary committee could consider. we decided 50 years ago to depoliticize the fbi i getting ten-year tenures to those who headed up the fbi to transcend in single administration wayne single president. ngs that distinguishes this nomination from others. secondly, we have an individual in kash patel who has published a book which in detail describes his view on politics in america. it is a book filled with grievances, conspiracy theories and information he sided was a january 6 rioters against the police. we had some questions he needed to answer about his conduct. we went through them particularly on the elements of the j6 choir. we know this sounds like a curious thing to spend time on but is a reflection of his priorities and the fact he is asking to head up the most important law enforcement agency in the u.s. and a time when he sided was a so-called political prisoners from january 6 instead of the men and women who risk their lives to protect us. he created this musical undertaking and was proudly

do you think this mayor adams matter, congressman, needs to be investigated by your judiciary committee. do you think the committee chairman jordan will do so? well, uh, we are composing a letter as we speak to him, telling him to do that. i don't have very high expectations. he will do that. but we need, uh, this entire matter to be aired out, because what this very conservative republican, uh, u.s. attorney, uh, has divulged is that there was an explicit quid pro quo negotiated, which is if you drop the charges against mayor adams, uh, which were handed down in an indictment by a grand jury, uh, which found that beyond a reasonable doubt, which is the standard that he engaged in these political corruption offenses, if you drop those charges, um, then he would go along and, uh, be a good political player. and they dropped the charges, um, without prejudice, meaning they would hold them over him. so if he didn't quite toe the line the way they wanted, they could be reinstated later. um, i mean, this is such a complete diminution of the department of justice and such a shrinking of the i
