south lake tahoe is ten. reno is 18.e heading shasta trinity, there's going to be some really low snow. look at this. this cold air is trapped. and so the snow level could be around 2000ft. you might even get some freezing rain right up around the oregon border just now for tahoe. it'll start off around 3000 504,000, then go up to 6000 before it starts to drop to 4500ft. but it's the shasta trinity area that you need to watch. rain returns add a little bit, but that low will strengthen and deepen right off the oregon california border. and then we'll get a roaring jet stream about 150 knots. and that will enhance some of this rainfall. you take this deep moisture, you know, lift it, cool it, condense it, and boy, you can get some wring out some pretty big totals, santa cruz mountains. but i'll say everyone, i mean, i mean, even look at livermore and concord, if they get that much, that's, you know, that's a big system for them. heavy rain likely though, especially tomorrow, 4 to 6, maybe seven. isolated 7 or 8 would not

looking up a live shot from a diamond peak in lake tahoe. right now, you can see things drying out at this time. there are a couple leftover snow showers in the high country. nothing too badly. that's going really discourage you from getting up there. but if you go up tomorrow, that will all be done on the temperatures, going to be very cold on the high country. it is 28 degrees right now in south lake tahoe. 29 incline and 30 degrees in truckee. the pattern begin to shift gears. that storm pattern has moved on out. you can see kind of rolling on in there over the last 24 hours. things settling down now. and so we're getting really ready for maybe one of the nicest weekend of skiing of the season. temperatures going to be chilly in the 30's. that's gonna hold that snow in place of the peaks is not to get slushy by the middle of the day. and by monday, a few clouds begin to roll in. after that, the weather starts to get interesting. all right. let's check out your kron 4 ski report and the palisades. yep. they've got 111 inches on the ground.

in truckee, 22 reno and south lake tahoe.e lone outpost out there at four cold degrees system will swing across now. low will deepen, especially as we head towards thursday. that, along with a rip roaring jet stream, will usher in some rather impressive rainfall rates and also high elevation snow. snow levels should get down to 4000ft, and you can see where the line is being drawn. ben lomond, santa cruz, morgan hill more than others, although even areas to the north and east. if you see almost two for concord and livermore, that's it takes a big system to do that. it really does. and not only here, but look in central san luis obispo, santa barbara, la. that's going to cause problems, no doubt about it. but mountain snow, which is really kind of been an also ran. this one does look rather impressive. multiple feet by the time we get to the weekend. so one more sunny day, mainly in the morning, then clouds in the afternoon, frost advisories out and we'll get some light rain late tonight. kind of about san francisco, san mateo

that is way below lake level at lake tahoe. and that means a lot of new snowfall to be seen but drying out into the weekend meeting. easier travel conditions just wouldn't be hitting the road on thursday or early friday, heading up to the sierra winter storm warning will technically remain in effect from tonight through friday at 10:00pm. but, you know, caltrans will be up there with all the plows trying to get everything cleared out for you, but multiple feet of snowfall is expected at lake level around. 33 inches of it. in fact, around lake tahoe, 45 inches around donner summit for the bay area. several inches of rainfall for us in especially up in the santa cruz mountains could see 4 inches of rain. that's with all this rain in a short period of time. flood watches going into effect tonight through saturday night. today is going to be a cool, windy and cloudy day with highs in the 50's. similar feel as to what yesterday brought us tomorrow. similar temperatures very rainy and very windy. friday starts with a few morning show

you see that snow around the great lake tahoe area right now watching that very closely as we're goingo see some heavy snow settling in the next couple of days. we've got winter storm warnings up all the way from tonight until friday at 10 o'clock as we're going to see that snow continue these coal bands rolling onshore, especially on friday. we talk about ohe snow level going up to about 7,000. be probably gonna drop back down to about 5500 by friday. something else to watch out for is the national weather service has issued and avalanche watch in the great lake tahoe area, not the major ski resorts. they maintain the slopes there very well. but if you get to the back country, got to be careful out there. you can see a lot of snow and a short amount of time. and so, yeah, there's the issue that we could have to deal with avalanche activity there in the next 24 hours. really not to be the best time to get out there anyway. heavy snow expected as we head throughout the day on thursday. friday. those temperatures cool off. the snow will likely continue. here's the good news, though. if y

south lake tahoe 27 up in arcata.ukiah sacramento at 30 degrees, 57 warm degrees in san diego. the key is the low is going to deepen off the oregon coast. and the jet stream is going to usher in some deep, deep moisture. we'll get some light rain late tonight wednesday. but look at thursday. i mean now again, there are a couple of forecast models that just depends on which one you use. a couple of them are saying no, no, no. the heaviest will be up here in marin county, a majority say down towards peninsula, santa cruz, santa cruz mountains. so usually the old rule of thumb is you split the difference. so it's either way everyone's going to get it on a pretty good rain here. by the time we get to thursday. and not only us, southern california, that's a lot of rain for them. if they get that, you know there's going to be all sorts of issues. this will be a big time snow event. most of the projections have been way off. i don't think this one is 10 to 20 around lake level and 3 to 4ft is possible. some of the higher ele

national weather services issued avalanche warning across much of the sierra nevada, the great lake tahoeward. we're seeing a lot of snowfall on top of some previous snowstorms. and so you start to develop these layers of snow on what will happen if your goal off in the back country. sometimes you get on some of these letters and there kind from some cold storm, some warm storm. so they have kind of difference between the 2 and they slide easily get on top of that. sometimes you can start avalanche. so you got to be really, really careful here as a ton of snow. a lot more coming overnight tonight. still, i think by tomorrow afternoon, you may just be able to sneak up there that snow in the morning and then giving way to some clearing skies and tell you what this weekend you're enjoying another beautiful weekend of powder on the slopes. if you want to head up there. but and dangerous all across the state. this really a statewide event, not just a bay area, northern california, and then, of course, southern california. we've been watching that very closely in that area because that rain com

we'll show you what's happening up there right now at south lake tahoe. here's the problem. it's 45 degrees. and the low this morning was 38. you are not going to get lake level snow like that. but look what's coming in the next five days. temperatures starting to cool down. snow on the increase as we move forward. you get heavy snow on tuesday and more at elevations down to 4 or 5000ft. thursday into friday. so you just heard how the sierra snowpack is sitting at 65% of average statewide. if this verifies 4 to 5ft of snow in the higher elevations, we might boost that average closer to 70%, maybe 75%, in another week or so. stay tuned. february so far starting off pretty good for the sierra. now closer to home. no snow here. we're going to have increasing rain later tomorrow. wind also increasing during the day, and those colder temperatures might just be cold enough by friday morning to see snow locally near 4000ft. right now it's not cold in the mornings. that's going to change later on. we'll get lows in the 30s back in the bay area, but not tomorrow morning. we wake up to

truckee south lake tahoe 40s. mammoths 50s. levels going up, up, up as in about 7500 to 8000ft. so it will be mainly rain at lake level until we get to probably wednesday. and then the colder air starts to filter in here. but the system has a ways to go. doesn't mean we won't get light rain, but this is all that we're seeing here by monday at 4:00. so this is more about cloud cover. what you get is the warm overrunning. this is a pretty good setup. sometimes just a steady drizzle or light rain russian river, also santa cruz mountains. then it starts to pick up tomorrow morning. tuesday is the main day. wednesday we'll get a break. and then it looks like here comes the next system on thursday. and that's some pretty decent totals across the board there up in the mountains. yes, there will be snow, but it's going to take a while to get cranked up. end of the week. yeah, it looks much better, especially as you head kirkwood. truckee mammoth looks pretty good. so if you are going to the mountains, today is probably the day to go be

currently reporting light rain in truckee and also south lake tahoe.hese are all the storm reports indicating some wind damage or some flooding as well. so they have been popping up a bit more this afternoon. in fact. reports of debris flow. this is fairly recent during the 4:00 hour. a slight impacting westbound lanes of state route 128 at chalk hill road. so that's a newer report, at least on the storm report map. but with the with that rainfall coming down up in the north bay. and here is the coverage, as you can see from santa rosa to healdsburg to vallejo, as we move the maps around, widespread coverage here from hayward to san ramon to livermore to antioch and discovery bay. here, most reports are light rain reports, but there's probably some moderate cells out there as well, showing you the santa cruz mountains, the san jose and morgan hill. here is the satellite. we're showing that circulation off shore here that's drifting closer to our coastline. and that is the source of the rain showers for today. we'll check out the wind reports. it's not

house peak an area just south of lake tahoe. we didn't return. search and rescue teams were called in, but before they could begin their search. friends of the scare made a heartbreaking discovery. its body was found in an avalanche zone with unstable snow conditions. authorities postponed the recovery effort until early tuesday morning. starting at 06:00am teams youth controlled explosives to reduce the risk of another avalanche before moving in, i spoke with the man who showed me a video from his phone of the rescue scene showing the coordinated efforts to bring dross home by 05:00pm. after hours of careful maneuvering crews successfully brought the victim out of the back country. the eldorado county sheriff's office credits multiple agencies, including the sierra avalanche center, u.s. forest service and caltrans. for making the recovery possible. officials are reminding the public of the dangers in the sierra. >> a new study says parts of the bay area are going down literally using satellites to analyze changes. a nasa study

when i was showing you half moon bay before take your eye out to lake tahoe here. >> they've also had of white caps there. they are also under lake wind advisory. now you head up to elevation and it's gonna be a different story or there's been snow falling. but right now down at service year, 46 degrees. notice that wind 32 miles per hour. and that is sustained winds. so those gusts are going to be higher than that. someone just cleaned off all of the benches here. it's a nice fresh snow of the diamond peak. but if you look back here, you can really see the difference yesterday. and today. but you can see some of that snow that fell in the overnight hours. and you know, storm warning until wednesday morning for the system that's going through right now. but that second system that colder system, that is the one that is likely to produce 2 to 4 feet of additional snow above 7,000 feet. so if you're already up there, you're going to be waiting out for some nice snow that's going to be on the court. get that snow going that you can't really ski when it gets that. while today we still hav

let's go down to the suoface of lake tahoe. this is in kind village and you can see what's going on here. you can barely see anything. but boy, when you look at the back notice those white caps on the lake. so that means the wind is wild. obviously the snow is coming down. temperatures right now. the service 34 degrees wind out of the south at 28 miles per hour and that is sustained winds. so we've got some gusty gusty wind happening there. obviously the system pushing across the bay area and driving all that moisture up to the sierra. so right now is a terrible time to be on the roads. you can see it right here with those darker blues indicating some of that really, you know, heavy snow that's coming down at this hour. so obviously we're under that winter storm warning that does go right through today into tomorrow evening. and then when it's all said and done, we are expecting this to be yes, a big system producing several feet of snow up at the peak. so let's track this forward just to show you where your opportunity would be

a husband and father of two from south lake tahoe.him missing on monday after he went skiing in the backcountry around powderhouse peak. police say his friends were able to find him through his avalanche transponder because of hazardous conditions. the sheriff's office couldn't retrieve his body until yesterday. >> the helicopter was ultimately, we hoisted the victim out to bring him back. some blasting had to be done to mitigate the avalanche risk. before we could put people on the ground where the victim was. so we used the helicopter to scan the area and warn anybody in the area to leave so that that blasting could be done. >> backcountry skiing is becoming increasingly popular with people who want to avoid crowded resorts, which has safety officials warning about the potential dangers. they say if anything goes wrong while skiing in the backcountry, there are no emergency crews on hand. cell service is spotty. help could be hours away, according to the colorado avalanche information center. more than 230 people in the u.s. were ki

but for now, i did want to say up there in north lake tahoe, if we can show those graphics really quick, the sierra snow lab, we're expecting an update at around 8 or 9 this morning, but did really well in the last couple of hours, just over that foot approaching a foot and a half there. also through parts of the boreal soda springs. we're going to keep it there in the sugar bowl area to about a foot doing well. palisades just around that half an inch mark, half a foot mark. so we'll continue to watch that. we're also recovering really well with some good news there through our sierra snowpack last week, we were at 65%, with the statewide average now just over 70%. so we're recovering in that to after a really dry january. looking towards the next couple of days through palisades tahoe today, we'll see some clearing there as the showers have pushed on through. but more snow is expected tomorrow and on into friday. we'll have some messages going up to just some travel delays to be aware of that will bring you as the week goes on. it is looking better though as we go on into saturday and
