latta from ohio, we decided to introduce h.r. 27, the halt fentanyl act which aims to curb overdose deaths by permanently scheduling fentanyl analogs or fentanyl related substances as schedule 1 substances and will strengthen law enforcement's ability to prosecute fentanyl traffickers and act as a deterrent. the halt fentanyl act also promotes research by improving the registration process to eligible individuals so that they can conduct studies on schedule 1 substances with appropriate safeguards. in the energy and commerce committee, we've heard testimony that there may be as many as 4,800 individual analogs or related -- fentanyl related substances. our experts at the n.i.h. and f.d.a. and others have studied roughly 30-40 of those 4,800 analogs or fentanyl related substances. by encouraging research of schedule 1 substances like fentanyl analogs we can better understand how these substances work and how we can prevent potentially harmful impacts in the future or even find a better use or a better opportunity than the current fentanyl that we use. better fentanyl -- because fentanyl has
