nbc's velena jones reports from the livermore from the livermore valley. after a dry january, wine makers are embracing today's rain and hope more is on the way. i'm ecstatic. actually, we really need the rain. saturated soil and rainfall is exactly what mcgrail vineyards winemaker mark clarence says is needed. after very little rainfall in the livermore valley this winter, telling us it's key to ensuring a full bodied growing season. i'm hopeful that we're going to have a good, good growing season. it's a little early to tell because we're just barely into february, but a little bit of rainfall in december. january was very dry, february starting out very nicely. even with today's rain, clarence says their soil is still on the drier side, which could force them to turn on their irrigation systems. you know, if sonoma county and napa county are getting probably 3 to 5 times the amount of rainfall we get here, as long as the. this vineyard behind me doesn't start flowing down the hillside. we're good dowown the street at 20 vineyards. they're also embracing

the busiest part of the morning commute right for you if you're headed into the altamont into livermore valley>>> a police chase in san francisco ended with six people going to the hospital. that's after a car that was being pursued smashed into a parklet in the mission district as people were enjoying the super bowl. >> we are joined from south 24th and van ness avenue. how are things looking this morning? >> reporter: just a mess out here. this incident unfolded yesterday at 3:30 in the afternoon. you can just imagine the chaos that was here as people were enjoying the super bowl. a family inside this parklet, it's believed, and this mess, people having to walk around it. this parklet just collapsed here and that car had at one point sandwiched between it. it started at 3:00 p.m. in stonestown. police tried to stop a car wanted out of berkeley. the suspects took off and police followed, reaching speeds of 45 miles an hour if that chase across the city. there was a minor collision on mission street that resulted in no injuries. then the car smashed into a parklet, injuring four people inside.

everybody will mostly stick into the 50s up there towards wine country, the livermore valley, and we'llh of about 58 in san jose. mostly sunny and dry for the weekend. we'll keep it pretty much the same for our sunday and even on into monday. but what will continue will be those cold numbers. now why is this happening? we just had some recent rain. well, that dry air mass is allowing the earth to cool way too much in those overnight hours. so here we go with the lows. for the next couple of days. we see subfreezing numbers for the north bay valleys. even down into the santa clara valley. could be some of the coldest numbers that we've woken up to this year. we take it on into the start of our monday. that's going to be a struggle for a lot of people to get the week day started. so bundle up and make sure that things that need to be taken care of, like your pets and maybe some sensitive plants outdoors, come inside for a little bit of a toastier night. these numbers will recover a little bit as we go on into tuesday. we notice a couple more 40s on the board as we start to talk about some

concord and livermore with quarter mile visibility in the livermore valley.and freeze alerts this morning. it will be dry and sunny throughout the afternoon, several sunny afternoons to come, increasing clouds on tuesday, maybe a little rain tuesday, but more likely the widespread rain on wednesday. here's where we stand so far. no surprise. santa rosa 170% of average. san francisco at 110% of average over 15in of rain. but look at the list. it trails off considerably into the east bay and south bay, with about 59% of average 4.5in san jose and concord only over three inches of rain. so you need a little more for sure. a lot more snowpack 116%. northern sierra, central and southern sierra not doing quite as well, 81% for the entire state. and here's a look at our atmospheric river as it takes. aim from san luis obispo, central california to southern california throughout the middle and latter part of the week. so we will get some rain. it's cold. we're going to get some snow as well. but notice the colors, those bright colors, the oranges and the reds from th

now moving off to the east livermore valley, santa, santa, san jose, you're still getting some significantl. san jose kind of out of it most of the day. and then bam! this afternoon it lit up this weather system. i think i said last night, on a scale of 1 to 10, it's a solid eight and a half. and i think it is it's almost a nine, but it's a big it's a big storm. and just because it felt like february, didn't it? it felt like a winter storm. those atmospheric rivers. this is not a traditional, technically an atmospheric river. this is atmospheric moisture involved. but this is a cold front, right. so those atmospheric rivers from earlier this week were just this nonstop drizzle. not a lot of wind, not anything. this thing comes through and it unloads with wind, rain and the whole shooting match. here's tomorrow morning. here's tomorrow afternoon front to back. the day is dry. streaks. creeks go down. rivers drop off. things get a lot better. and then thursday clouds up thursday morning. and then this system thursday afternoon thursday all day looks pretty darn weak for the most part. certai

in the north bay valleys in the mid-30s to a mix of upper 30s and low 40s closer to the water, 42 degrees in san francisco, 38 for pacifica, a little bit chilly, 36 degrees in livermoreto the santa clara valley right around 40 degrees in san jose and upper 30s for los gatos and morgan hill, a little below average for this time of year. everybody will be within 2 or 3 degrees of normal by saturday afternoon with that mix of clouds and sun, 62 in san jose, one of the warmer spots, a mix of upper 50s and low 60s around the bay, mostly mid-50s along the coast and low 60s for other inland parts of the bay as well, napa and petaluma staying in the upper 50s by tomorrow afternoon, very normal temperatures for the middle of february, very similar readings on sunday even with more clouds and the chance of a couple showers headed our way. this forecast model shows a chance of showers moving into the north bay by sunday morning and falling apart as it tries to move deeper into the rest of the bay area. this is the most likely scenario that we don't see a whole lot of moisture holding together and the north bay barely gets more than a couple total hundredths inch of rain. this o

the exception, livermore and the santa clara valley, san jose only picked up 0.06 thus far of rain, but there is more to come. this is a double-peaked atmospheric river followed up by a weaker atmospheric river later next week, so a lot of rain chances over the next seven days. you may wonder why are we calling this a double-peaked atmospheric river instead of three different ones? it's because we never completely get out of atmospheric river conditions due to the amount of moisture flowing through the atmosphere over our heads. even when the rain chances taper off sunday, there's still a lot of water up there. this ordinarily would be an ar2 followed by an ar1 and combine to result in an ar3, which is the middle of the scale. it means beneficial rain and potential for localized flooding. we'll get into more of that and add up the rain forecast over the next seven days coming up. >>> we haven't gotten a lot of rain lately, but when it does rain, there are a few businesses in san francisco that seem to flood over and over again, which is never fun. part of the mission that was underwater

the rest of us getting in on some spotty activity out there towards the tri-valley livermore that's just, and san jose really not a drop in the sky. it will just be a morning event. so let's take it hour by hour here in san francisco. we watch for the showers this morning, and then a cloudy sky for all of the events going on in the city this afternoon. a high of about 56. so definitely bundle up as we go out there. down into the south bay we are waking up with peeks of sunshine and gilroy through the next couple of hours. turning cloudy as we approach lunchtime and all of that activity pushing on through. 62 a high later on this afternoon. now the similar as we go on into our monday and tuesday with a shot of rain and sierra snow as we move towards the middle part of the week. for people staying local, or maybe heading out for ski week up there in the mountains. really, that's the finish here as we go on with the rain. then we're building in with some warmer and spring like weather, as high pressure pushes those storms further up into the pacific northwest. so what does that mean? we are

you're also seeing some of that and livermore the tri valley as well as down along. 85 in the santa clarand as you head up highway 17 on your way down to santa cruz. so still some wet spots for sure. most of our flood advisories and watches have expired. we still do have one lingering flood watch west of santa rosa. these areas right here have actually proven to be deadly, especially in those rural roads were all that standing water in fast moving water. it's piled up. still a lot of water making its way down after yesterday's heavy rainfall winds so much calmer than the 50 plus mile per hour gust we had yesterday. so this morning, maybe a lingering sprinkle or 2. it's really looking like a relatively calm as we do roll into the weekend. nice dry skies won't be in until wednesday of next week that we really get back into weather forecast and look at this. we will have some upper elevation snowfall right here in the bay area on wednesday. it's going to be another cold system which means some mountain top snowfall for us. and of course, that sierra snow fall. this rainfall is likely to take

livermore. even in the north bay valleys, just enough cloud cover for temperatures to stay at or above 40 degreestart, but not typical february high temperatures tomorrow. we'll feel readings more typical of late march or early april, mid- to upper 60s, close to 70 degrees for most of the north bay, hitting 70 degrees in fairfield and exceeding 70 in a few spots, 71 degrees in livermore, 71 in san jose, 72 in morgan hill, 73 degrees in los gatos. on sunday afternoon similar temperatures even with cloud cover and a slight chance of a sprinkle for the north bay. this is the ten-day temperature outlook for san jose. we'll see readings around or above 70 degrees through the rest of february essentially, even one really warm day wednesday with temperatures in the santa clara valley hitting the upper 70s and then we see a retreat towards closer to normal temperatures the first few days of march. that overlaps with the next rain chance headed towards us. it's pretty low on the rain chance chart. we're skipping the weekend and looking at the first weekend in march. we can't be too confident, but it looks

temperatures mostly staying in the low 40s close to the water, 39 for pacifica, mid-30s for livermore and in the santa clara valleyland locations. you'll warm up a bit more than everybody else tomorrow but still falling short of 60 degrees. 59 degrees is the warm spot in san jose tomorrow afternoon. everybody else will be in the mid- to upper 50s, half moon bay, the cool spot at 54. petaluma, santa rosa and healdsburg reach 59 degrees. there is another chance of rain coming in by the middle of next week. let's look at our daily rain chances on the rain chart. it's easy to see when that arrives, wednesday through thursday, lingering shower activity into friday. at 5:30 we'll look at our long range forecast models side by side. they're still kind of sorting out their differences. we'll keep you updated when it looks like another atmospheric river will approach the bay area the middle and end of next week. with showers moving in on wednesday, rain and wind are more likely thursday, tapering on of to showers by friday. enjoy that dry stretch over super bowl weekend into the first half of next week even if we're a bit

fremont and union city right now as well as some pretty good rain right around the tri valley to pleasanton livermore, dublin, these areas right here really in the mix with that currently. you're also seeing some of that activity from san mateo just north, at least the bulk of it of the san mateo bridge. and then up in the oakland hills to so definitely still a little bit active out there. now, as you got a little hint at earlier, we still do have some aerial flood warnings up in the north bay. still some very heavy rainfall overnight, which resulted in a lot of water into those already swollen streams. so please, if anything, the last couple of shown us be very mindful of any standing water, especially in rural, poor drainage areas. that's where that water piles up. that's where we can face a major life-threatening issues from it. futurecast, wind gusts is showing a much calmer morning. we had winds peaking yesterday and last night of above 50 miles per hour. so it was a aggressively windy day yesterday. futurecast does show snow up in the sierra still lingering with us a few lingering mid morning s

valleys. we're already seeing those 30s pop up around sonoma, napa out towards livermore again by the morning.ith the clear, dry air in place, that cold air kind of settles in to the bottoms of the valleys. so by tomorrow morning, lots of low 30s in the forecast. freeze warnings up for the valleys of the north bay and tri-valley. and you can see why an area south of san jose with those low 30s to start things off on sunday morning, but a pretty nice temperature recovery once we move forward into the afternoon. highs in the mid 50s from san francisco to oakland, upper 50s closer to downtown san jose, and we might rebound close to 60 during the afternoon up towards santa rosa. so we've got dry weather that's going to take us all the way through tuesday. so we'll probably see at least a couple more of these nights with frost advisories and freeze warnings. then by wednesday, obviously some changes returning to the forecast, which will eventually lead to rain, looks like a high impact on that thursday morning and thursday evening commute and a lot of snow out there. snow levels pretty close to 4 t
