lorne michaels.rved new book, lorne the man who invented saturday night live. it is one of those masterful pieces of writing that doesn't require an interest in the subject. if you've never seen saturday night live. the book is still relentlessly fascinating. if you've ever worked in an office, for example. there is much for you to learn from. one of the greatest practitioners of office politics in the world, lorne michaels. there are surprises about your favorite cast members, and there is the young man named lorne, struggling and often considering himself a failure in show business before he created saturday night live. it is the best biography i have ever read of a living person, because lorne michaels, so willingly and often self-critically, turns over his cards in discussions with susan morrison that are more revealing than any interview he's ever given. the book is a cultural history of the last 70 years of north american entertainment, very much including canada, where lorne michaels grew up.

[ light laughter ] and i understand -- tom, i understand you have some ideas for sketches?" and as soon as you guys find out a host has ideas for sketches, every writer goes, "great!" >> seth: oh, yeah. [ laughter ] >> a host -- >> seth: not even a little bit happy. >> -- with an idea for sketches. because, you know, the atmosphere isn't machiavellian enough up here. on the seventh -- there's not enough competition to get something up there. >> seth: yeah, you're definitely are thinking like, "maybe saturday when it comes down to my idea and tom hanks' idea -- >> yeah, which one is gonna win. >> seth: -- tom hanks will pick mine." [ laughter ] >> i know, i'm going to tell you right now i kicked somebody off the show because of an idea i had that saw fruition, to th

lorne sits next to you. it's like, i could do this for 12 hours. it's so fun.ressing room to do whatever we have to do after that, and the phone in my dressing room rings. which, again, this is not my dressing room. it's the host's dressing room. like, "should i pick this up? is this for next week?" [ laughter ] is this maybe somebody -- is it a prank call? i don't know. i pick it up, and it's robert carlock, who is tina fey's partner on "30 rock." they co-created "30 rock." and said, "hey, do you want to play a part of '30 rock?'" and i'm like, "am i fielding offers from 8h?" [ laughter ] this is so weird. but, apparently what had happened was tina called lorne and said, "is this guy funny?" and then lorne said, "yeah, he'll do." [ laughter ] >> seth: by the way, that's the absolute pinnacle -- >> that's the top, top. >> seth: he'll do is like -- if i ever got a "he'll do" from lorne -- >> that's, that's -- you won the award. and, you know, a week later, i was working on "30 rock" playing a perfectly normal doctor that nothing ever went wrong with. he is aware of his own lorne ness.t himself up as some kind of very distant, strange comedy god. there's so many people who, their whole lives have been trying to figure him out. bill hader says. another colleague put it this way i feel about lorne, the way i feel about the ocean. it's huge and beautiful, but i'm afraid of it. >> i'm afraid of it. right? and that's what i want to ask susan about. susan, you hear about people being afraid of lorne. you also hear about people being banned from the show, right? especially hosts who come on, who who do something that either offends him or he doesn't like or whatever and never again, you know, no soup for you. you know? is there a list? is there a lorne sort of enemies list, is there or a list of people who are who are banned from saturday night live? and can they appeal? can they ever get back on? and who are they? what? >> i don't think there's really a banned list. i think that's just a good media hook. what's interesting is that people who are on this so-called list, yo

lorne thought we were dead.there are two audiences. there is the people i know and then there is the wider american audience. and to this day he is always telling his young writers and performers, we have audience in all 50 states. wehave to remember this is broadcast. it takes in the whole country. >> that's the news. good night. have a pleasant tomorrow. >> reporter: keeping all this in mind, michaels set about creating a show for his own generation. >> what do you want from us? >> we want your pollen. >> reporter: as happened, nbc's then president was thinking along the same lines. it's fun to knock network execs, but the role that herb schlosser played. >> yes. he was a visionary president of nbc who was looking to fill a hole on saturday night when the network been running johnny carson's reruns. and he dictated a memo that pretty much hit all the points of what "snl" was to be. he wanted to do a show out of studio 8h at 30 rock, which been dormant since the '50s. he wanted to be live, on at 11:30 saturday

i want to thank the producer lorne michaels for urging me to speak with you directly.ink i'm making it on the show. and i met a businessman on my plane over from my meeting with lorne. like, so, do you want to come to new york with us? it was that kind -- >> i just dying right there. >> dying. >> mary katherine, i was reading this morning. when you proposed this character, maybe people didn't quite get it. you almost didn't make it on to the show with mary katherine. >> yeah. you put the sketches in the read through. and i had done the character in my stage show and it's very physical. i fall through chairs. at the table read, they wod read, oh, she falls into chairs and gymnastics. i don't know dp they knew -- >> so when it was the dress rehearsal, they put it really low on the list. usually stuff they maybe don't believe as much on the list, it might get cut. i was kind of mad. i was like, i think they're not getting what this is. so i'm going to have show them in the dress rehearsal. i did it and the audience loved it. then you go into lorne's office between dress and air to find it what made it in the show to see if you got cast in the play. mary katherine got m

she's the author of lorne the man who invented saturday night live, and we were. on sunday night. you've been working on this project for a decade. >> that's right, i have. >> i started in 2015. >> persuaded lorne to. >> get on board. >> the next year. and i interviewed him about 50 times in his office. and everybody in. >> his big world. >> and then i had to sit down and do the hard part of writing it. >> but okay. >> so here's my. question to you, which is in the context of business people, we all talk about him as a great producer and all of that. >> but i. >> think that he is one of the great talent, either talent spotters or talent molders or talent, something he seems to have a sort of very good hand when it comes to. >> finding the right people. >> yes. >> what is that about? >> did he find the right people to find the right people, or was he was he at every whenever a groundling or a second city person came in and did not audition, was was lorne there to decide or did he have always. >> he's always. >> had talent. >> he's always. >> the. >> final decider.
