good evening everyone, i'm mike mibach. football fans across the country gathered to watch the super bowl and for one, get together. it turned into a terrifying situation in san francisco's mission. police say they were in pursuit of a wanted vehicle. the suspects car eventually slammed into a parklet outside a sports bar right near 24th and south van ness. six people are hurt, two in critical condition and ktvu henry lee has the story. >> it was a miracle considering that this parklet is completely totaled. >> splintered pieces of wood and a collapsed roof are all that's left of a parking lot. outside, a busy pub in san francisco's mission district. this after a carload of suspects being chased by police, crashed on super bowl sunday, injuring six people, including a mother and child, on the sidewalk. police have not said why they were chasing the audi q7, only that the suv was wanted. newly elected supervisor john. >> all right, having some technical issues with henry's piece there. but in the meantime, let's take you bac

. >> and good evening everyone i'm mike mibach. let's get right to our top story of the night. and that is the weather right now. the rain pulling out of the bay area, but the winds still whipping across many cities. as we give you a live look outside the bay bridge, looking west towards san francisco, you can see the flags there, lower part of your screen still whipping around, already seeing some of the aftermath of today's storm. a viewer from saint helena sharing this video with us. you can see just how much water is flooded over the driveway of the home. water runoff from the vineyards made its way to the low spot on the street. now, the viewer tells us he received 3.5in in just the last 24 hours, and there's some dangerous surf along the coast from now all the way to saturday morning. a high surf warning in effect in santa cruz county, officials activated their emergency operations center and are also closing the santa cruz wharf. with that, let's get right over to our weather and a look at what to expect in the coming days. roberto gonzalez, you've been a very busy one t

i'm mike mibach right to some of our top stories tonight at 11. right now there is an active hazmat situation in south san jose. firefighters say they responded to an overturned tanker carrying 4000 gallons of liquid nitrogen. this is right near bernal and harry roads, right by the ibm research lab. if you're familiar with the area, all the roads nearby have been blocked off. this incident was initially reported just before 730 this evening. officials say the driver was able to safely get out of the vehicle. the fire department says it is helping with the truck company's technicians to contain the spill. >> what the company is going to have to do is because of the weight of the liquid nitrogen, they're going to have to offload a lot of what's left in still in the tank, so that they can actually get the vehicle upright if they try to do it with the amount of weight that's in there right now, we could create more damage to the tank that's already been done. >> the fire department says there is no immediate risk to the public. a disturbing situation

i'm mike mibach. >> and i'm claudine wong. that ordinance is set to be voted on tomorrow night by the fremont city council. a draft of the ordinance says it would make it unlawful for any person to camp on any public property, including any street, sidewalk, park, open space or waterway. it would not prevent anybody from allowing someone to camp on private property. the draft also says it would make it a misdemeanor for any person causing, permitting, aiding, abetting or concealing a violation of the ordinance subject to a fine of up to $1,000 and six months in jail. new at ten ktvu lamonica peters is live for us in fremont, with more from concerned advocates and the city's mayor, who is trying to calm concerns. lamonica. >> claudine. the city says that this ordinance will allow for more enforcement to keep the public safe, but advocates say it seems like the ordinance is punishing people for being homeless, punishing those who try to help them. >> we need help, that's all i say. we need help. >> josh

i'm mike mibach. >> and i'm cristina rendon. for the bay area, but the impact is still being felt. let's give you a live look tonight along the guadalupe river in downtown san jose, near the shark tank. >> earlier tonight, firefighters jumped right into action to make a rescue there in the guadalupe river. according to the fire department, two adults, two dogs and four puppies all became trapped on what was becoming an island right there in the middle of the river. the initial call came in just around 430 near coleman avenue autumn parkway. san jose fire used boats to make the rescue. one person was evacuated there at scene but was not transported to the hospital. meteorologist roberto gonzalez joins us now. roberto. it was a wet and windy day across the bay area. >> and it ain't over till it's over. good evening everybody. it's actually two different systems. it's a double barrel area of low pressure. you can see the center, the core just hanging off the pacific northwest coast side. and then meanwhile, look over the los angele

i'm mike mibach.tonight at 11, nearly ten years after eight year old maddie middleton was raped and murdered in santa cruz this afternoon. the killer's motion to be released was denied. a jury determining that 25 year old adrian gonzalez is still too dangerous, and he will spend at least another two years in prison. coming up in the newscast, we will hear from community members as they react to the verdict there in santa cruz in novato. three suspects have been charged with kidnaping a man from a skilled nursing facility, all in an effort to gain control of the victim's finances. police say the three suspects took 60 year old dean birx out the back of the facility in a wheelchair. a nurse who tried to stop the crime ended up getting attacked. the suspects, one of whom is a relative, have been charged with burglary, kidnaping, conspiracy and false imprisonment of an elder or dependent adult. and more protests across the country over cuts to government spending and the department of government efficienc

i'm mike mibach. >> and i'm claudine wong. three people who were arrested on the east coast appeared in court today, and authorities believe they could be tied to a series of killings in. are part of an extremist group that was based here in the bay area. the three suspects were arrested on sunday and appeared in a maryland court today. they are 26 year old daniel blank, who was born in berkeley and went to cal, 33 year old michelle zatko and 34 year old jack lasota. lasota lived in the bay area and is also known as the leader of the group that has been described as an extremist anarchist cult. that group is tied to several killings, including the fatal shootings of the suspect, michelle zac sos parents. u.s. border patrol agent david masland and vallejo property owner curtis lynn. >> and it was back in 2019 when lasota landed on the radar of police after she was arrested in sonoma county at a protest. at that point, lasota, working on a blog under the name ziz, became involved with a group called the rationalists in berkeley.

i'm mike mibach. >> and i'm claudine wong.rivers can expect a challenging commute with heavy rain ramping up as we head into the morning. let's get right to meteorologist roberta gonzalez and roberta. things are just getting started. >> yes they are. this is big. it is beautiful, but it's powerful. take a look at this. it's textbook perfect. it looks like a giant comma off the coast of california. and the particular area that's going to be hit the hardest is right here in northern california in the bay area. and precipitation slips into southern california. i just widened this image. look at how it trails off all the way to the hawaiian islands. that means it's tapping into some tropical moisture, and that means it's an atmospheric river and you can see the precipitation. these are renegade showers in front of the initial front itself. and it's already blasting the santa cruz mountains, where we've already seen over 3/10 of an inch of rain in just the last couple of hours and throughout ben lomond. and we also have some lighte

i'm mike mibach. >> and i'm claudine wong. tonight, the entire bay area under a flood watch. and some places are already getting drenched. we do have team coverage for you tonight. ktvu is amber lee is standing by in santa rosa where it started coming down earlier this evening. but we begin with chief meteorologist bill martin. bill, tell us how this is all going to shake out. >> well, it is winter, it is raining and it is raining on top of what has already been a pretty wet few days. so a flood watch is in effect for basically the entire bay area. this is the current rain band as it moves through the bay area. not just tonight, but through the day tomorrow. we've already seen a couple of inches of rain up in the russian river drainage basin, an inch of rain in marin county, a half inch in other places. the rain is falling down pretty aggressively, especially in the north bay. that whole band slides south as we go through the evening hours. so here we are tomorrow morning. the commute looks like it's going to be wet on and off, and then it follows up with more scattered showe

i'm mike mibach. >> and i'm claudine wong. dennis richmond died this morning in grass valley with his wife, deborah holding his hand. he is being described tonight as an icon, a legend and a journalist who broke barriers. but he had humble beginnings, starting here at ktvu as a clerk in 1968. and yet from the beginning, it was his calm demeanor and a voice that resonated through households around the bay area that connected him to the community he cared so deeply about. >> his coverage of big stories in the bay area includes some of the station's most historic broadcasts. dennis richmond never hesitated to go to the scene of a story or ask the questions that needed to be asked. he crafted those stories in a unique and compelling way. >> but it may have been his time in the studio as the anchor of the 10:00 news that we will remember most for 32 years on the anchor desk. he was there, taking us through events cemented in history from the 1978 assassinations of san francisco mayor george moscone and sup

i'm mike mibach. right to our top stories tonight at 11, a man who worked as a paraeducator at a san jose high school is under arrest for alleged possession of materials depicting child sexual abuse. san jose police say sherman carter was observed downloading and distributing child sexual abuse material from his home in cupertino. carter was arrested on january 28th. detectives say devices containing the abusive material were found at his home. we're now learning seven people were hurt in a police pursuit and crash in san francisco tonight. one adult remains in serious condition at the hospital. video here showing the moment a silver suv slammed into that crowded parklet outside a sports bar right when the super bowl was getting underway yesterday. police say two women inside the suv are in custody, and that the vehicle was reported stolen out of richmond. san francisco city officials are planning for street closures for this coming weekend. on saturday night, the city's annual chinese new year parade

good evening everyone i'm mike mibach. right to our top story here at 11. a winter storm starting to hit the bay area as we do give you a live look out in san francisco along the embarcadero. you can see the streets definitely wet there in the city. a lot of rain, a lot of wind, especially here in the next few hours in san jose. the rain coming down. earlier this evening, the umbrellas were out, the wipers were on. things really going to ramp up as we head into those overnight hours, right to roberto gonzalez as we go, especially those winds. right, roberta? >> absolutely. with the saturated soil that we already have in the copious amounts of precipitation in the forecast and the winds in excess of 70mph along the coastline and santa cruz mountains, you bet there will be downed trees and the potential of downed power lines and or power outages. this is it. it's a powerful system. we have the leading edge of it now impacting the bay area. you see lots of rain showers around the santa clara valley area. we've already picked up 15/100 of an inch of rain in san

i'm mike mibach. the goal closing a budget deficit. the result? shutting down three grade schools in the city of santa rosa. as ktvu tom vacar reports tonight, parents and families calling the vote heart wrenching. >> santa rosa wednesday night school officials, after eight months of open meetings and transparency, decided to close three elementary schools to help offset a multi-million dollar deficit. >> it is heart wrenching. no one, no educator, no superintendent, no position, no board member signs up to serve to close schools. >> brook hill and albert elementary schools will close by june of this year. steele lane elementary will close by june of next year. brook hill parents are devastated. >> i love those teachers. they have cared for my kids. it's not just my kids, though. it's a group of community that is a small school. >> they offer also a rise program. my son is autistic, so it's going to be hard because we have a lot of families with special, special kids. >> but school board members saying they need more information did not decide whi

i'm mike mibach. the mayor of san jose says he has a plan to bridge that budget gap, reallocating money to address the housing crisis. but some argue that plan could actually make the deficit worse. ktvu is jesse gary live tonight outside city hall with our story and jesse. it is budget season for a lot of cities out there. >> yes it is. michael, good evening to you. all three of the bay area's largest cities have budget deficits here in san jose. mayor matt mehan believes he can shrink the severity of the budget deficit here by reallocating measure e funds. >> rather than having groundhog day every year. we need to simply embrace reality. >> san jose mayor matt mehan says that reality the city does not have enough money to meet its projected obligations for fiscal year 2025 2026. sluggish sales tax receipts, which are down about 11% coupled with inflation, are cited as reasons. >> a lot of people moving, a lot of changes, a lot of expenses, inflation, they are spending more than they have budgeted. >

i'm mike mibach. the entire bay area already under a flood. watch. with this, we get right to our chief meteorologist, bill martin, with more on what we're going to expect to see here over the next 12 hours. bill. >> that's right. these are different weather systems. we've got two storm systems coming our way. the last bout of rain was an atmospheric river directly focused on northern california. but it was like a fire hose, right? like a water hose that is now changed to two distinct weather systems that we can time out. the first weather system is moving onshore now. it will move through tonight. this will call this the tuesday system. it's going to be the strongest of the two by a lot. the second system comes in on thursday. the flood watch has been hoisted up. don't want you to panic about this. this is just, you know, this is what you got to do when you've got saturated ground. so we're going to get a couple inches of rain overnight tonight into the day tomorrow. it's not a ton of rain. we can manage it. but there will be you know, there's groun

i'm mike mibach dennis richmond was a friend and a colleague, but also a true inspiration in this business of broadcast news. richmond honed his skills as a reporter. in the 1970s, the bay area was ground zero as the nation experienced social and political upheavals. he covered the high profile trial of dan white, who was convicted of the murders of san francisco mayor george moscone and supervisor harvey milk. later there was the 1989 loma prieta earthquake, where he, alongside co-anchor elaine corral, remained on air for hours, anchoring from our station's parking lot. richmond was one of the first black anchors of a major television newscast. his trademark steadfast delivery was no nonsense. professional, personal and loved. dennis richmond was broadcast news. dennis richmond was ktvu. jana katsuyama begins our team coverage of the life and career of richmond and jenna. you've heard from several leaders throughout the state today. >> i have mike, and as we are feeling the loss here at ktvu, there are generations of community leaders who heard the news and have been sharing their memorie

i'm mike mibach. this happened over the weekend and the victim is now recovering from the terrifying ordeal. ktvu crime reporter henry lee live tonight in novato with the story. henry. well. >> novato police say the 60 year old man was rolled out in a wheelchair during the kidnaping. and then when a nurse tried to stop it, that nurse was attacked. police say a 60 year old man who could not care for himself was kidnaped over the weekend from a skilled nursing facility in novato. >> the suspects entered the facility through a back door, and they did so without checking in with staff. >> i've learned from court records that the victim is 60 year old dean birx, and that the incident happened at novato health care center, which bills itself as marin county's premier skilled nursing facility. novato police lieutenant alan bates said it happened at about 1130 saturday morning as the suspect snuck the victim out the back of the facility where he lives. >> they then wheeled the patient out the back door and to

i'm mike mibach. we do have live team coverage for you this evening. ktvu is jesse gary and christien kafton out live in the elements. but right to chief meteorologist bill martin. we go. bill, where are we at right now with this storm? >> yeah, a little bit of a break in the north bay, mike, but the rain is still falling in parts of the south bay. let's take a look at the current radar, and you'll see the yellows representing the heavy rain. this is over the last few hours. i want you to see that band move through the bay area. rainfall rates a half inch an hour. an inch an hour in some areas. lots of road, roadside puddling and some flooding. and some urban and small stream flooding. here we are right now at 6:00. most of the showers have moved off there in the livermore valley down towards san jose. you're seeing scattered showers, but for the most part, the heavy rain has moved on. and with that heavy rain moving on, we've got skies beginning to clear. now that's the story here. we've got a bunch of rain. we get a break tomorrow. if we didn't have

i'm mike mibach. the cuts are not official, but sfmta is looking at every possible option as a way of closing its budget deficit. ktvu christian captain live tonight in the city with a closer look here. christian. >> yeah, the sfmta board meeting just wrapped up no official decision at this point, but the board has to find some way of cutting $15 million out of its budget. and right now they're looking at every available option. every school day in san francisco, crossing guards from the city's municipal transportation agency take to the streets, blocking traffic, making sure families get to and from school safely. crossing guards say it's a big responsibility. >> i seen cars making right turns on red and it's close calls, you know? and i told myself they can't put a life on a kid. they may save millions of dollars for school crossing guards, but if a kid gets fatally injured, then you cannot put a life on that. >> with citywide budget cuts a reality, sfmta is looking for ways to cut $15 million out o
