i want to bring in cnn chief diplomatic editor nic robertson, live in tel aviv. nic, as we watch these images of the red cross vehicles waiting to take those israeli hostages to be released. walk us through what we're expecting here and what we saw earlier today. >> yeah, i think one of the things that we're seeing witnessing here today, i mean, look at the crowd behind me here in hostages square. certainly a lot more people here than last week. it's a rainy, dull day today. last week it was sunny. there's way more people here now. and part of that is because people understand today is the last known, agreed and planned handover of living hostages. of course, it is hoped and aspired that there will be more coming. but this is the last one that is planned at the moment. what we've seen today, tal shoham being released, 40 years old, looking weak on his feet, looking thin. a very mengistu being released. he too looking very weak, dazed and confused even on the stage, almost sort of held up right by the two big hamas fighters that his side handed over to the red cros

but first, let's go to cnn international diplomatic editor nic robertson, who is live in tel aviv at hostage square. nic, can you bring us up to date how the last hour, the events, the release appeared to you and the reaction there among supporters in that square? >> yeah, euphoric when the man actually the three hostages. chen yi horn and sasha trufanov, were able to get. they were handed over and they got into the red cross vehicles. that kind of symbolize formalized the end of their captivity. 498 days driven to meet the idf, picked up by the idf within the past hour, driven now by the idf to berri, which is not far from not far from the border of gaza. they'll get more processing there. but of course, so important for them and their families. this, in the coming moments, is when they're going to get reunited with the very sort of close members of their family. other members of the families have been watching. we've seen the cousins, the grandfather of. sagi chen, cheering with jubilation as they watched this process unfold, mirroring the sense of relief here in hostage square. of

for more on this, we're going to go to cnn international diplomatic editor nic robertson joining us livefrom tel aviv. so, nic, the release of palestinian prisoners, that is the second part of today's prisoner exchange. what can you tell us about what we've seen now with the release of presumably hundreds of palestinian prisoners? >> yeah, it's the whole day of releases is a sequenced event. and the part that we've just witnessed in the west bank at the moment in ramallah is a release of the some of the 36 palestinian prisoners held in israeli jails that were charged or were being held on life sentences. of those 36, 24 were due to be expelled, so that leaves a residual 12 to be released. and not all of those were going to be released into the west bank. now, the vast majority of the 369 palestinians to be released today are expected to be released. the 333 who were detained inside of gaza and that 300, those 333 are expected to be released directly into gaza in a couple of different locations at some point in the coming hours. so what we're beginning to witness is that the first element

cnn's nic robertson is live in tel aviv. nic, is this the scheduling that's expected? you know, usually by the time we come on at 6 a.m. eastern on saturday, the hostage release is complete. any explanations for the delays this morning? >> yeah. no real explanations today. it has been slower than expected. it has been later than the times that hamas had originally indicated. and perhaps you might understand. one reason for that could be. and they've been protracted events, is that hamas knows that as long as they have got the hostages, the cameras are on them. israelis can see hamas is control their strength for these different places inside of gaza. that's important to hamas because this is the last agreed scheduled release of living hostages. so hamas is maximizing their exposure to the israeli audience, who, frankly, don't get to see much of what is going on in gaza, on cnn, on other networks. we get to see the images of gaza. israeli population tends not to get that. hamas knows that it milks it. it propagandize these releases. so maybe that's what we're witnessing

cnn's nic robertson is in jerusalem. nic, what can you tell us about this delayed release? >> yeah, this is. >> an unexpected wrinkle. and something that hamas is actually calling a violation of their agreement with the israeli government. the prime minister, benjamin netanyahu, is having what's being called a security consultation right around now, this evening to decide about future. hostage releases. and also, we're. told that that that meeting, they'll take a vote on the release of these palestinian detainees and prisoners. there are 620 of them, by the way, 151 um, life or long term sentence prisoners, of which 97 are expected to be expelled from the country. and also there were 445 men from gaza who were detained, 23 children and one woman as well. so a big number of detainees, uncharged, who've been picked up in gaza since october 7th. they were expected to be handed over to their families, have been out there in the cold and in the rain waiting for them. and as you saw there, a different day for the families of those six israeli hostages held by hamas, and one of th

nic robertson is with us from jerusalem. nic, what more can you tell us about what we've just seen playing out there? >> yeah. look, that was really quite a moment when chan, who's 36 now, got to hug his wife avital, and one of the, you know, while they were hugging there, he asked her, what have you called our third daughter? because, of course, his third daughter was born a few weeks after he was taken hostage. he's never seen her. he doesn't know anything about her. so she told him. and it was, you know, just that moment. it was such a beautiful moment. i've known that family met with avital, met that young baby john met jonathan, his father, who campaigned so hard, um, in the white house, in the state department, all over and up and down capitol hill and everywhere he could go in washington, you know, to help make this happen. so, you know, a really beautiful moment, a moment for them to cherish, um, and other moments for the other hostages that were released as well. the argentinian, israeli, 46 years old. yeah. um, bitt

cnn's international diplomatic editor nic robertson, is in jerusalem for us. so, nic, is this a solid show of support for israel by the trump administration? >> yeah it is. and we heard i think president trump speaking about that on the runway as he was getting off the plane there briefly, again, reaffirming that that that commitment, that commonality of view. and that's, again, what we heard from prime minister benjamin netanyahu saying, you know, a a common and coordinated strategy that the two countries have together. but it does seem, you know, if you look at just today, even in the terms of that relationship, there's a full court press on prime minister benjamin netanyahu really get to get a speed up on getting to the phase two negotiations. now, the phase one, that's the first six weeks with two thirds of the way through it. less than two thirds of the agreed number of hostages released so far. but the phase two is by far the harder phase. that's the one that could lead to an end to a war. that could be a political price on that for prime minister netanya

and nic robertson in london. jeff, let's start with you. >> well, jenna, just a few moments ago, the president told reporters in the oval office when asked about this again, he said, everyone loves it. of course, that flies in the face of the reality of this. this is a sent shockwaves throughout the arab world, of course, where it is not being well received. and palestinians, of course, view this simply as ethnic cleansing. but the white house right now is scrambling to catch up to the president, which is a familiar pattern that we have seen. now, advisers say this is something he has been talking about privately. this is something that did not take them by surprise. he was reading this from a statement last night in the east room. look at the smile right there on on the prime minister's face after the president said this. so it was clear that he was aware of this as well. now what happens? that is a central question here. of course, there's a white house briefing this afternoon. the president has a few other eve

cnn's nic robertson joins us now from tel aviv, from hostages square. we're getting updates that the final hostage, as i said, is in poor health. what can you tell us? >> yeah, he was transferred without the normal hamas propagandizing, putting him on a stage, making him say things. he was handed over quietly, his understood to be in a wheelchair. understood to be not very well. look, part of the reason for that has been held for ten years. hisham al-sayed walked into gaza. reasons unclear. back in 2015. hamas captured him and held him hostage ever since. releasing him now, he is understood to have difficulty breathing. also, the mental strain of being under duress for so long. there's concerns about that. but coming back to his family, coming into israeli hands, getting to. professional hospitals and a level of care that he wouldn't have been able to have in gaza as gaza's been under such heavy bombardment. the hospitals there so heavily damaged. the emotional. rising of the support of the families of all the other hostage hostages we've seen released

. >> cnn international diplomatic editor nic robertson has more on what happened from jerusalem. >> hamas is describing this as a mix up. in essence, they're saying this is, on their part, an honest mistake. you've heard from prime minister benjamin netanyahu saying very clearly that he doesn't believe that. he believes that that that hamas is not acting in the good interests of israel at this point and is vowing for this revenge, if you will, to make sure that hamas pays for this. so where is her body? hamas is implying that this mix up would mean it is somewhere still in gaza. do they know precisely where it is? but but i think this is only just one of the tensions that has emerged out of all of this. it's not just what hamas would describe as the mix up over her body. israelis would describe as something else. but what a challenge on hamas's narrative that the family, the boys died in an israeli air strike very, very clearly now in quite extreme terms. the idf is describing this, their deaths as cold blooded murder. >> contrary to hamas, lies. ariel and kfir were not killed in an air s
