let's get right to it all with nbc news correspondent steve patterson in malibu for us. just how null vulnerable is thia and how long could the threat of landslides go on? >> reporter: i apologize, zinhle. we're starting to get someon th us. if i squint a little, i apologize about that. thankfully, the major storm is over, but the ground remains saturated. landslides, mudslides in a burn zone like this, you can see the damage left over as crews continue to clean up from that, remains in effect really for years and years. the immediate impact, though, after a rainfall is still a threat. this could last for the next couple of days at least because the soil is still loose, and because when you have a burn scar in these areas, it sort of sheds off that protective layer. there's no anchoring of any vegetation, so rain just sort of rolls right down the hill. that's the situation here. i wonder if you can see back here the blackened hills up there. there's sort of a debris base in here. the public works guys say that hasn't been like that for the last 15 years, very dangerous s

. >> steve patterson is in the pacific palisades of california and the burn zone hit hard by the wildfiresd bill cairns is track thing storm. steve, let's start with you and the storms. heavy rainfall and damaging wind gusts. how are people preparing? >> reporter: yeah, the rainfall has started in earnest. haven't felt the wind gusts yet, but those are on the way in a few hours. the prep is everywhere, especially this the most concerning areas, which is where i'm standing, these burn zones. so dangerous for the potential of debris flow. you can see the hillsides, while visibility is lower now, you may be able to see some of the hillsides above us. these are burn scars, and they are the most dangerous areas because of how much the soil has loosened. we also had a few pockets of rain over the past few weeks, so the ground already saturated. you see the k-rails have gone up, there are berms in these areas trying to prevent the debris flows from flowing into an area like this. not much danger, because there are specific evacuation notices for areas like this. and because obviously much of the

nbc's steve patterson is with us from malibu. steve. good morning. what are you seeing there today?g at it. i'm reporting on it. there is a whole lot. it is a mess. but i want to make one thing clear. it's a mess and not a disaster. and i think because what i'm also seeing is a lot of mitigation. you're looking at the sandbags behind me. 300,000 of these in the region, more than that, 120 of those big k-rail barriers trying to prevent a scene like this where there are still in this burn zone, homes that are still intact, trying to prevent those mudslides, the debris flows, the landslides from landing on something like that. i want to show you something, though. yesterday we were here. and if i don't slip here on the mud, i can show you this was a valley. it is now again, more mud. and then you can see the rocks behind there as well. all of this came down because of these burn scarred hillsides. this is what officials and authorities were trying to mitigate and prevent from happening. with a scene like this where there were houses, obviously not houses here, thankfully. but a lot of
