good evening, i'm raj mathai. we begin a crucial week for san francisco. plenty of parties and plenty of celebrities. but this is also the first big test for the new mayor, daniel lurie. his thoughts about cleaning up the streets for the nba all star game. that segment just ahead. let's start, though, with that police chase that left six people injured in the mission district of san francisco. we have new video that paints a clearer picture of what happened. this chase and this chase and crash happened yesterday afternoon. security cameras footage you see here shows that dark gray suv. it's an audi. whizzed down a busy 24th street with sfpd chasing close behind. the suv crashes into the napper tandy restaurant parklet, where people were watching the super bowl. you can actually see one person, at least one run out of that audi. according to sf fire, six people were in that parklet. they were hurt in that crash. one of them a child, all thankfully expected to survive. the owner of the pub and parklet says she originally thought it was an earthquake. everybo

raj. we continue to follow that plane crash in philadelphia, but we're also following the deadly midair crash between the american airlines flight and thatt army black hawk helicopter. ntsb investigators say they have now recovered all of the black boxes. also, we have new video coming in of the crash, and we want to warn you, this video may be disturbing. the crash happened wednesday night. this is new video obtained by cnn. the american airlines flight from wichita, kansas, was preparing to land at reagan national airport when it collided with a helicopter above the potomac river. all 67 passengers and crew members and military personnel have died. 42 remains have been recovered so far. the ntsb is leading this investigation, and in a news conference this afternoon, investigators say they have recovered the so-called black boxes from the plane and the helicopter and believe they will be able to extract all data from those recorders. this will be crucial for the investigation, as some out

i'm raj mathai. and i'm jessica aguirre. we're going to start with the rain that continues to batter the bay area. not letting up just yet. now i want to show you something. just in the newsroom. several apartments have been flooded in san jose's berryessa neighborhood. this is the betty and gardens apartments on lundy, right by the berryessa bart station. the apartments are near the banks of the upper penitencia creek. so you can see some of the apartments flooded. people are trying to clean out some of the water. jocelyn moran is there. she's going to have more for us later tonight. further south, streets flooded in gilroy. this is miller avenue by christmas hill park. uvas creek flooded, causing the streets there to be overtaken by water. this is in a neighborhood where a man was trying to clear a storm drain to help the water dissipate. got stuck. and those high winds responsible for knocking down trees. knocking out power. in fact, trees came down in the oakland hills closing part of shepherd canyon. a big tree too. far

this is nbc bay area news tonight, i'm raj mathai. we start with the headlines that we're watching tonight. another rate hike for us here in california. state regulators just approved increases for two big insurance companies, mercury general and safeco, which is a subsidiary of liberty mutual. in all, 660,000 policyholders will be affected. both companies submitted the requests last summer, so it doesn't appear that they're related to last month's wildfires in southn california. all right. take a look here. here's how much the policies will go up. mercury general will raise rates by an average of 12% for homeowners beginning in late march. so next month, condo and rental policies will also go up, but the increases will be smaller. safeco homeowner policies will go up about 7%. those increases begin in may. now check the mailbox because you might be getting a letter if you haven't already. our consumer investigator chris kamara is going to join us in just a few minutes to talk about these letters that urge homeowners to make changes t

raj. and they're trying to get better malls, as you know, disappearing all over the country as shoppers increasingly turn to their phones and laptops and go online shopping. but those that continue to thrive all seem to follow one key rule keep up with the changing times. and that's the plan in san mateo with the hillsdale mall. the shopping center, which recently opened up part of the mall to outside strolling now, aims to open up a lot more of it. it will soon submit plans to demolish the southern that is the enclosed part of the mall, and rebuild it with an open concept. you're seeing some of the artist's renderings here. it will include retail stores, office space, more than 1000 housing units, all things meant to modernize the modern mall experience. our goal is to, you know, create a new kind of urban neighborhood, urban village, if you will, that will, you know, have retail and office and residential, all in a mix of, of uses. okay. that seems to be, i guess, the trend here. i'm thi

i'm raj mathai. and i'm jessica aguirre. tonight, a break from the rain.ut the problems persist, especially in the north bay. from landslides like this one in marin county. that's how the day opened. yesterday afternoon, the hillside gave way, slamming mud and debris into an apartment complex at the bottom. this is off sir francis drake boulevard in fairfax. no word on how many peop might be displaced. take you to sonoma county. an evacuation warning is now in effect because of a high landslide risk as well. we saw this one in santa rosa. happened yesterday at a home on deer trail road. mom and a daughter inside. the father says he was at work when he got a call from his wife. as far as we know, the rainfall had been 4 or 5 days. it got to a saturation point in the ground and probably about 25ft of mud just kind of slid into the house and took out the house. luckily, no one hurt the home. the home has been red tagged. now the family tells us this was actually a newly built home that replaced the one they lost during the 2017 tub

i'm raj mathai. and i'm jessica aguirre. chiren being held by immigration agents in the bay area may have just lost their best hope, their attorneys. the trump administration cut the funding to a program that pays attorneys who represent immigrant children living in this country without their parents. nbc bay area sergio quintana has that story. at legal services for children in downtown san francisco, there's a mural on their lobby wall that was done by teenage artists. this is a team that services some of the most at-risk youth in the bay area. it's a lot of young people who are particularly vulnerable, who have been abused, exploited. yesterday they got a notice from the federal government to stop work on their contract to provide legal services to their young clients. in fact, one of their attorneys was in immigration court yesterday with one of their clients. when that work stop order from the administration was issued and the attorney had to continue with the proceeding because the attorneys are legally obligated to. t

and i'm raj mathai. president trump's first month in office has been marked by thousands of ice arrests, undocumented people with or without criminal records arrested, and his administration quickly moves to carry out his promise of mass deportations. those with years long pending immigration cases wonder what's next for them. investigative reporter hilda gutierrez has their stories. fear, confusion and hope. some of the emotions from immigrants and attorneys outside san francisco's immigration court. it's also where we recently spent four days observing hearings and speaking with those directly affected by the president's plans. it might look like any downtown san francisco high rise, but inside this building, judges will decide the fate of thousands of immigrants here in northern california. salvadorena. i am salvadorian. i arrived almost three years ago at san francisco's immigration court. new policies from the white house have people on edge, like this single mother who asked us not to use her name.

well, raj wages are among the highest in the nation here. but as we talk about a lot, so are housing costs. and nowhere do people spend more of their income on housing than san jose. patricia smith, like a lot of people in silicon valley, makes a solid living. i make good income. but says high prices, high mortgage rates and multiple bids have kept her from buying a home here. and i have a group of friends, you know, all women single. and we've talked about moving somewhere and buying a house together. it might be a good idea to buy as a group, because it takes a surprising percentage of our income to afford a home. today, according to data from casa. san jose homeowner spend on average, almost eight out of every $10 they make on housing. compare that to san francisco and los angeles, and to the conventional wisdom that we should spend 30% of our income on housing, with experts saying they expect mortgage rates to stay high. people start realizing, maybe we won't get back to that 3% that we had in 2020. and insurance costs adding to the alre
