i'm raj mathai. and i'm jessica aguirre. tonight, a break from the rain.ut the problems persist, especially in the north bay. from landslides like this one in marin county. that's how the day opened. yesterday afternoon, the hillside gave way, slamming mud and debris into an apartment complex at the bottom. this is off sir francis drake boulevard in fairfax. no word on how many peop might be displaced. take you to sonoma county. an evacuation warning is now in effect because of a high landslide risk as well. we saw this one in santa rosa. happened yesterday at a home on deer trail road. mom and a daughter inside. the father says he was at work when he got a call from his wife. as far as we know, the rainfall had been 4 or 5 days. it got to a saturation point in the ground and probably about 25ft of mud just kind of slid into the house and took out the house. luckily, no one hurt the home. the home has been red tagged. now the family tells us this was actually a newly built home that replaced the one they lost during the 2017 tub

i'm raj mathai. and i'm jessica aguirre. chiren being held by immigration agents in the bay area may have just lost their best hope, their attorneys. the trump administration cut the funding to a program that pays attorneys who represent immigrant children living in this country without their parents. nbc bay area sergio quintana has that story. at legal services for children in downtown san francisco, there's a mural on their lobby wall that was done by teenage artists. this is a team that services some of the most at-risk youth in the bay area. it's a lot of young people who are particularly vulnerable, who have been abused, exploited. yesterday they got a notice from the federal government to stop work on their contract to provide legal services to their young clients. in fact, one of their attorneys was in immigration court yesterday with one of their clients. when that work stop order from the administration was issued and the attorney had to continue with the proceeding because the attorneys are legally obligated to. t

i'm janelle wang and i'm raj mathai. she's back in the headlines in an uncomfortable spotlight, ousted oakland mayor sheng thao in a federal courtroom today for her ongoing corruption and bribery case. we are getting a better sense of what kind of evidence the federal government has, and how long it may be before tao and her three co-defendants go to trial. nbc bay area's velena jones has the details. no comment today after today's hearing. former mayor sheng thao left the federal courthouse in silence. this morning. prosecutors handed over hundreds of thousands of files that make up some of the evidence in the case against her and three other defendants. when you look at the mountain of evidence in this case, i think it's unlikely this case will go to trial in 2025. tao, her longtime partner andre jones, and businessmen david and andy duong all appeared in court today. the duong's run california waste solutions, a recycling company contracted by oakland. each of them declined to answer any reporter questions today. crim

and i'm raj mathai. parts of the south bay are muc darker than they should be tonight. a copper wire theft is to blame. thieves are stripping the wires from public lights, making them useless. san jose says it's taking a while to fix those lights because it's such a widespread problem. nbc bay area's ian cull explains what the city is now doing. the street lights in south san jose neighborhood haven't worked for a while now and understand why. all you need to do is look at the base of each one. a broken utility box with exposed wires making the base of each light its own. mini crime scene full of evidence of someone stealing the copper wiring. when this first started, it was just 1 or 2 around town. now they're actually coming into the neighborhoods and hitting an entire city block. we counted eight of them out on one street alone. thieves steal the copper and then sell it. and the damage they leave behind isn't cheap to fix. i'm sure it's costing the city a lot of money. i don't know how much, but it's a continuing problem that is just building up. this money could be

and i'm raj mathai. it's a day of deadlines, threats and delays. president trump is now delaying the tariffs on mexico and canada, but the proposed tariffs on china are still to go into effect tomorrow. this comes after the president enacted a 25% tariff on imports from mexico and canada. on saturday, president trump signed that order. the president has blamed all three countries for the flow of fentanyl flowing into the u.s, along with migrants. it originally was supposed to start tomorrow, but the tariffs with mexico and canada have been delayed for a month. canada announcing late today it will spend $1.3 billion to secure the border. mexico says it will reinforce its own border with 10,000 national guard members, but a 10% tariff on all chinese imports is still expected to kick in tomorrow. they've agreed to put in 10,000 soldiers permanently, like forever. 10,000 soldiers at their side of the border. and stop fentanyl. if we can't make a deal with china, then the tariffs will be very, very substantial. china says it will challenge the tariffs a

i'm raj mathai. let's start with the headlines that we are watching on this tuesday. still a lot of concern about that deadly stabbing at santana row, which happened on valentine's day. s.a.p.d. says it's actively looking for multiple people who ran from that scene. today, investigators talked about this case publicly for the first time. they say they found the 15 year old boy with at least one stab wound. they have not released any suspect descriptions or named the victim. a gofundme that appears to be created by the victim's loved ones says the 15 year old boy was on a valentine's date with his girlfriend when he was attacked by a group and stabbed in the heart. the initial call was about a report of multiple involving multiple subjects in a fight. when officers did arrive, they located the victim, who was suffering from at least one stab wound. so the suspects had fled prior to police arrival. police also say the victim's girlfriend is cooperating with this investigation. also this evening, more cuts are coming to the entire csu system. declining enrollment is to b

this is nbc bay area news tonight, i'm raj mathai. we start with the headlines that we're watching tonight. another rate hike for us here in california. state regulators just approved increases for two big insurance companies, mercury general and safeco, which is a subsidiary of liberty mutual. in all, 660,000 policyholders will be affected. both companies submitted the requests last summer, so it doesn't appear that they're related to last month's wildfires in southn california. all right. take a look here. here's how much the policies will go up. mercury general will raise rates by an average of 12% for homeowners beginning in late march. so next month, condo and rental policies will also go up, but the increases will be smaller. safeco homeowner policies will go up about 7%. those increases begin in may. now check the mailbox because you might be getting a letter if you haven't already. our consumer investigator chris kamara is going to join us in just a few minutes to talk about these letters that urge homeowners to make changes t

i'm raj mathai. and i'm jessica aguirre. stabbing his own father. that's what concord police say they found when they responded to a call of a man stabbing his own dad. tonight, police are investigating that stabbing and the police shooting that followed. here's nbc bay area's jodi hernandez. advising that a male got stabbed by his son. you're listening to the police dispatcher initial call that led to a fatal officer involved shooting. early this morning, concord police responded to a call of a man and his father struggling over a knife in the family living room. the caller told dispatchers they were hiding in the family's garage. pop, pop. that's kind of what i heard. and i went to this woman who lives two doors down, heard gunfire around 130 this morning. police say when they arrived, they found a man actively stabbing a family member and shot the attacker, killing him. bigad right now, just praying for them. this is very hard for anyone to even go through. i can't even imagine losing your son and your husband stabbed. you know, this is just horr

i'm raj mathai. and i'm jessica aguirre. hercules man says he was manhandled and beaten by police while suffering an epileptic seizure. that seizure caused him to crash his car. but instead of being treated like a victim, he says officers treated him like a criminal. nbc bay area's jodi hernandez shows us the body camera video that led to that lawsuit. yeah, so the car went down right over here. 22 year old jack bruce shows us where he crashed his car last april after suffering his first ever seizure while behind the wheel. i just remember going up to visit my grandmother, and when i left that house, my memory cuts off. while jack doesn't remember what happened next, hercules police body camera video shows it all. he's having a seizure. just let him. just let him be. his attorney says witnesses called it in as a seizure, and says officers didn't give him enough time to get out of his car. if you keep pulling your seatbelt, i'm going to rip your seatbelt. one officer immediately begins peppering him with questions. did you in

good evening, i'm raj mathai. we begin a crucial week for san francisco. plenty of parties and plenty of celebrities. but this is also the first big test for the new mayor, daniel lurie. his thoughts about cleaning up the streets for the nba all star game. that segment just ahead. let's start, though, with that police chase that left six people injured in the mission district of san francisco. we have new video that paints a clearer picture of what happened. this chase and this chase and crash happened yesterday afternoon. security cameras footage you see here shows that dark gray suv. it's an audi. whizzed down a busy 24th street with sfpd chasing close behind. the suv crashes into the napper tandy restaurant parklet, where people were watching the super bowl. you can actually see one person, at least one run out of that audi. according to sf fire, six people were in that parklet. they were hurt in that crash. one of them a child, all thankfully expected to survive. the owner of the pub and parklet says she originally thought it was an earthquake. everybo

good evening, i'm raj mathai. we are wet as we head into valentine's day. the nba all-star weekend and the chinese new year parade. on top of that, we have some earthquake issues. let's start with tonight's rain and the continued flooding across the bay area. the south bay gettingg hit especially har. take a look. flooding from gilroy to san jose. this is near christmas hill park in gilroy. after the uvas creek overflowed this morning. nearby neighborhoods and cars you see there underwater. in san jose now, flooding has forced people from theirpartments. this is at the betty and gardens complex off lundy avenue near the berryessa bart station. the location important here because it's along the banks of the upper penitencia creek. a couple of trees fell into the creek, blocking the flow and causing apartments to flood. people just trying to get things dry here. and they were rain trying to clean up, but it's still raining in many spots. the saturated ground along with the high winds also knocking down trees in oakland. this is a big one that came down on she

good evening, i'm raj mathai. thanks for being with us on this president's day. a lot happening in the bay area. we're going to get to mayor lurie and the $100,000 teenager from oakland in just a few minutes. but we want to start with some new details about that deadly stabbing at santana row. a 15 year old boy was killed. according to a post from the family on social media, he was on a date on valentine's day last friday with his girlfriend. the post says he was beaten and then stabbed in the heart. police say the attackers ran off and they have not yet caught them. investigators have not confirmed the number of people involved or whether they were also teenagers. today at santana row, shoppers were stunned. that's so abrupt. like that's the way his life ended. like, i feel bad for, like, him and his family because i'm like, he was 15. like he had so much life left to live. and this story stretches to the peninsula as well. a boxing gym in redwood city called gladiator says the victim was a youngng boxer.here. the gym posted on social media, quote, he was more t

i'm raj mathai. and i'm jessica aguirre. the countdown to tip off is on just daysrom now. the best in basketball. and tens of thousands of fans will descend on the nba for all star weekend here in the bay area. with so many visitors and commuters expected, bart says the trains are going to be crowded. all of this comes as new info shows that the transit agency's focus on safety is working. here's nbc bay area's velena jones. reporter. bart is bracing for a big boost in business, as the nba all-star weekend takes both sides of the bay. when riders come to bart, if they take it for all star weekend, they're going to see clean stations. they're going to see our new train cars, they're going to see police presence, and they're going to have a great experience. the agency says they'll be using their longer eight car trains to accommodate what they expect to be a lot more riders this friday through sunday. they will also have extra trains on hand if needed. bart p-d is also partnering with opd, sfpd and the san francisco department of emergency management to make sure those ride

last night, our own raj mathai spoke with fremont's mayor, who says the city has no intenon of targeting groups who help the unhoused and claims that other cities in the bay area use the same aiding and abetting language in their municipal codes as well. so this is not unique language to the city of fremont. it's a language that's commonly found, and the intent is to prevent large wooden structures, like in the waterways or in the parks, that ar not only not safe for the community, but also not safe for the people, the unhoused people that live in them. and so we will never enforce any of these provisions on people that want to give water or food or supplies or tent or even the outreach workers. a case of whack a mole where you're just moving people around or potentially arresting them up to six months in jail, or $1,000 of fines that they can't pay. or worse still, arresting people like our friends at the dominican sisters of mission san jose that go to the osgood encampment and feed the poor and clothe the poors part of their mission of mercy. they too, could be arrested under the aidi

and i'm raj mathai. parts of the south bay are muc darker than they should be tonight.. thieves are stripping the wires from public lights, making them useless. san jose says it's taking a while to fix those lights because it's such a widespread problem. nbc bay area's ian cull explains what the city is now doing. the street lights in south san jose neighborhood haven't worked for a while now and understand why. all you need to do is look at the base of each one. a broken utility box with exposed wires making the base of each light its own. mini crime scene full of evidence of someone stealing the copper wiring. when this first started, it was just 1 or 2 around town. now they're actually coming into the neighborhoods and hitting an entire city block. we counted eight of them out on one street alone. thieves steal the copper and then sell it. and the damage they leave behind isn't cheap to fix. i'm sure it's costing the city a lot of money. i don't know how much, but it's a continuingem
