let's move it over to rob mayeda meteorologist rob mayeda with more on the sierra. and rob, it was so slow going in january. more than lackluster. great to see some snow on the boards here. exactly. we had three weeks of dry weather, which took the statewide average last week down to 65%. but due to the weekend snow, mainly across the northern sierra, those numbers are now up to 69% and set to climb big time over the next couple of days. you'll notice here as we take you into the radar view, what we'll have is the snow now moving into the northern sierra, reaching the west side of lake tahoe. and as the wind and snow increases, that winter storm warning going into effect right now will carry all the way through 10 a.m. wednesday. so plan on some very gusty conditions, maybe some road closures along interstate 80 and highway 50. and now let's talk about how much snow could fall between those two storms. first one up coming in now through wednesday will drop about 1 to 2ft of snow. then on top of that, a colder storm system that could drop snow levels down to 3 to 4000

rob mayeda is here tracking the storm. rob. there is more on the way, and it's by far the biggest impact, as you saw in that video up in the north bay, where if you go back to friday, we've had almost ten inches of rain up there near mount tam. we've had an average of 2 to 5in of rain across sonoma county. but look what's happened in san jose. virtually nothing out there. we're going to explain why that's the case coming up in a moment. right now, a view on our storm ranger shows scattered areas of rain, including around the santa cruz mountains, but not much rain in san jose. this is the santa clara valley rain shadow effect underway where you got rising air over here on the west side of the santa cruz mountains. as the air comes up, rain falls on that side. then as the air drops down towards san jose, it tends to dry out. that's the reason why we've had about three inches of rain around ben lomond, but almost nothing in san jose. this particular upper air pattern is not good for producing a lot of rain around the south bay, b

but before we get to that, i do want to check in with our own rob mayeda, who's been keeping a close eye on the watches and the wind. yeah, still in the middle of the flood watches bay area wide, as you did see during the day, as much as five inches of rain fell in san rafael and in the santa cruz mountains, now near ben lomond, we're approaching five inches. so these are the areas we're going to watch through 4 a.m. but this area in red at the top of the newscast, you saw that home in the mudslide slide into the russian river. well, now the russian river at guerneville is expected at 7 a.m. to rise just slightly above flood stage, reaching 32.87ft, just slightly below one foot above the minor flood stage there in guerneville. the other component of the story, obviously it's the wind. we've been having tree damage, some localized power issues from here. the peak winds should start to come down as the cold front passes will begin to see those wind speeds on the decrease, but pretty high impact here. and as you mentioned this, and i want to show you the winds up here at lake tahoe, 54m

rob mayeda. now, let's bring you in here. you're tracking the wind here. how much of a problem is this for our downed trees and power outages? well, the good news. where the wind is concerned, the worst is over. san jose earlier had those gusts up to 41mph. and we did have damaging wind gusts. a lot of this tied into the severe thunderstorm warnings. those alerts you are probably getting on your phone during the day. you see the wind speeds up around the marin headlands, santa cruz mountains, more than 70mph. even downtown san francisco seeing 55 mile per hour gusts. and in the east bay hills, just outside on the east side of oakland, we had wind gusts up to 60. so right now, the good news is that front moves out taking the rain with it. we're beginning to see the wind speeds come down. wind advisories for now, still in effect until 7 a.m. we may see that expire sooner based on these wind speeds starting to throttle back. the worst of the wind is done, but widespread tree damage and still ongoing power outages around the bay area due to those damaging wind

let's bring in our meteorologist, rob mayeda, with more on rob. our snowpack on friday when they took the survey was not looking very good. are we making up for it over the weekend? and with more snow on the way, starting to make up some progress for the three dry weeks we saw over the sierra. if we go back to friday and that snow survey statewide average was 65% of average statewide. northern sierra at 89%. now you factor in what we saw just over the weekend. northern sierra now up to 101% of average. and the statewide average did go up 4% in just the last couple of days, up to 69% of average. now, the temperatures are too warm right now at south lake tahoe at 49 degrees to see that snow at lake level. but that is set to change over the next five days. we have daily opportunities of seeing snow at times and heavy snow at that. starting to move into areas along the interstate 80 corridor. and as we go through the next few days, through the end of the week, 4 to 5ft of snow expected to come down over the sierra. keep that in mind with this winter s

rob mayeda joins me now with a look at the numbers.nd, you know, at the beginning in january, it was so dry. we kept saying, oh, it's bad, it's bad, but it's not as bad as we thought, right? yeah. it's the boom or bust cycle of the rain season. we had big rain and snow totals back in november. january was relatively dry and now we're back into the boom cycle. in terms of the rain and sierra snow. i thought i'd compare where we were one year ago. sierra snowpack was about 78% of average, pretty consistent from north to south. now this year we're actually slightly ahead of that average from one year ago. but notice how it's the northern sierra that's seeing the majority of the snow. a lot less to the south. now in terms of the reservoirs, this also good news 84% of average. that's the state's four largest reservoirs. same time last year we were at 78%. the biggest gain. trinity ke, one of the state's two largest reservoirs, 66% of average, whereas trinity lake, whereas trinity lake. and it's right there, right up there in the northern pa

let's bring in meteorologist rob mayeda. rob, i know you've been tracking the wind and the conditions right now, but where that smoke is going and the bay area air quality management district just issuing now an air quality advisory for those living to the east northeast side of where that fire is burning. we have seen some strong wind in the area nearby to the south and walnut creek gusting to about 23mph. and look at the time lapse here on this refinery fire. a couple of things stand out. first, how low to the ground? that plume is an indicator of some pretty strong winds, the camera bouncing around in that environment. and it's along that corridor towards the east northeast side where we've been seeing some of these locally unhealthy levels of particulate matter fanning out on the north side of contra costa county, contra costa health also recommending folks stay indoors. this isn't your typical wood smoke. but again, with that petroleum products fire that continues to move off towards the east northeast. so it's the corri

joining me now is meteorologist rob mayeda, and we've seen these really extreme bouts of severe coldent parts of the united states, everywhere east of the rockies, really dealing with this weather. we're kind of in a bubble here in california. we got 60s, mild temperatures. but you mentioned those wind chill factors well below zero. let's take you on a tour of those subfreezing temperatures around the country. a lot to see here on the map as you look at bismarck, north dakota, -11. that's not the wind chill. that's the actual air temperature outside. wind chill factors 30 degrees below zero when you factor in the wind. but notice how cold it is farther south is you get into kansas city just three degrees and 26 degrees in dallas fort worth. so look at the progression here. if the national travel outlook, if you have travel plans to chicago or dallas tomorrow, highs in the 20s around the great lakes. you factor in the wind. it feels a lot colder than that. 32 in dallas fort worth and 25 degrees in nashvil. about 60% of the country dealing with these cold temperatures, but not here in

our meteorologist, rob mayeda is here and he's going to tell us when we're expecting some 70 later this week. and a home in the bay area with an asking price under a half $1 million. yes, under a half a million. what's the catch? our velena jones fills us in on all the strings attached. but let's begin with breaking news. you might have just seen it on nightly news, but investigators just gave an update with new information. at least 17 people are hurt after a delta airlines plane flipped upside down upon landing in toronto, canada. you can see the plane on its top in this video taken by passenger john nelson. it happened earlier this afternoon, local time. amazingly no fatalities. and take a look at this video. another passenger, pico boulevard coco gauff, snapped this video while he was being helped out of the airplane by first responders. all 80 people on the flight were quickly accounted for. 76 passengers and four crew members. we do not know whether any of these passengers are critically injured, and we don't know exactly what caused the crash. but the delta plane landed in snowy

let's bring in rob mayeda now talking about the snow impact with all of this robbie. yeah, we've been seeing some improvement in that sierra snow pack. if you go back to this weekend, for example, the northern sierra saw an increase from 89% to about 101% of average as of today. but this is going to be a case of before and after when it comes to the sierra. the numbers we're seeing right now and the heavy snow at times set to move in as we head through the next 24 hours or so. we'll continue to see the snow, which is dropping now over the northern sierra, just reaching the west side of lake tahoe. this will continue to fill in as we head through tonight. very difficult driving conditions. jeff mentioned the wind for the sierra. it's going to be heavy snow at times, plus wind gusts up to 70mph near the summit. winter storm warning will be in effect through about 10 a.m. on wednesday. and look at these snow totals coming down. storm number one abobout 2 to 3ft of snow above 5000ft. then watch whwhat happens here on thursday. look how these totals come down the mountain
