he's live in san jose. and damon, you spoke with students today and parents about the demonstration and the day of action. what are they telling you and why did they participate? reporter yeah, i spent part of the morning, janelle with nico and emiliano, their sixth graders in the alum rock school district here in san jose, and with nico's mom, she was there with us, and they felt that they needed to do this. they needed to stay away from school and follow through with the solidarity call with the rest of the pro-immigrant community. so they stayed home and they watched documentaries and movies about the immigrant experience. and so that was their way of still getting some education to an extent and still sending a message. but the numbers were just drastic. and the alum rock school district, i'm going to read these. there were 1611 students who stayed home. that is more than a 300% increase than any normal day next door in t franklin-mckinley school district, 2874 students stayed home. that's a 363 increas

the program is free to anybody in san jose. a san francisco business owner who was shot right outside of his shop is now closing, but he says he's not abandoning the city. martin alev, who owns the vapor room near san francisco's upper market street, held a farewell celebration for his dispensary on ninth street yesterday. it will be closing down as he recovers after a major trauma. san francisco police released this surveillance video from january 27th. martin was outside of his shop taking a smoke break when a man rode up on an e-bike, pulled out a gun and pointed it at him. martin says the man shot him seven times. the gunman was later killed in this shootout with san francisco police, who found a cache of weapons in his apartment, which happened to be in the same building as the vapor room. martin says he didn't know the man or doesn't know why he was shot. he hopes to reopen again after taking some time off. we're going to try again somehow, hopefully in another location, because i don't really want to work at this location

not much in san jose.s type of weather pattern favors the north bay and the lift on the coastal and inland mountains to wring out the rain. steadier rain has been around all weekend long on the north coast. it's that line, by the way, that will make its way southward during the day tomorrow. so wake up tomorrow morning. just like we saw today with the cloudy skies, spotty showers at times not as much around the santa clara valley. by noon, increasing clouds and increasing rain by 3:00 into the north bay with highs tomorrow in the upper 50s to low 60s. so here's the timeline. mid afternoon tomorrow. rain rates starting to pick up in the north bay into the monday evening commute. rain now spreading southward across san francisco into the santa cruz mountains by 11:00. and then you'll see these areas into the south bay now into tuesday morning in and out of the rain for the tuesday morning commute. but the peak impact could very well be that tuesday evening commute. look at these colors you're seeing here on

bob redell is live from san jose. with how the city is preparing for the storm before a clear timeline on when the rain will arrive. we're going to start with meteorologist kari hall, and we had a wave of some light rain during the overnight hours that has moved out and will be watching this next storm system coming in with some heavier rain. we're starting out with some light rain across some of the hilly terrain in parts of the north bay and some of the coastal areas, but overall it is still dry and we do still have a little bit more time to prepare for the heavier rain that will be moving in later. so as we take a look at what we are seeing on san bruno mountain storm ranger that's scanning the sky for that storm. as that rain returns tonight, there will be times of heavy downpours and also an elevated landslide threat, mainly near the coast line and in some of the burn scar areas. we will also have to watch those creeks and streams and a lot of sierra snow, but the rain coming back around 6:00 for the north bay an

nbc bay area's damian trujillo is in san jose with that story. school districts across the state are still doing the math, but the loss in state funding for one day is huge, and administrators worry there's another loss that directly impacts students. tens of thousands of students across the country stayed home on monday, an act of protest against president trump's mass deportation plans. it's important for them to see what's going on in today's world and that it's not right, and that they could actually they actually have a voice. school districts certainly heard the protesters message loudly. that's because some state funding is tied to attendance rates in san jose's franklin mckinley school district, 1611 students were out, well above the district's average sick rate. those absences mean the cash strapped district, which is debating school closures, lost roughly $128,000 in state funding in the nearby alum rock school district. the numbers were even 2900 students were out, adding up to a loss of roughly one quarter of $1 llion in state funding
