you know, significant amounts of rain have been falling here throughout santa cruz county all day. you'll have a little drying out and then bam, another round comes in, very heavy, very hard to drive through, very hard to deal with because all of that rain eventually funnels down into the san lorenzo river. that river has become quite dangerous. holly hoff came out to see for herself what the whole town of boulder creek was talking about, how quickly the san lorenzo river was rising. >> it is impressive, a lot of water very fast. >> reporter: for most of the past year, she says you could practically tiptoe across the river. >> normally i come down here when the water's really low. people are fishing and i've even seen kids swimming and stuff in here, but i've never seen it raised this high before. >> reporter: but it's not just something impressive to look at. it could be dangerous for people who live in low lying communities like felton grove. this morning santa cruz county sheriff's deputies posted notices of potential flooding from the san lorenzo and also went door to door warn

even north of that all the way down to santa cruz county. ere is a flood watch in effect from reading down to santa cruz county from the sierra nevada all the way to the day across the entire bay area. excessive flooding, of course, is possible due to excessive rainfall, especially in low-lying areas. it was a poor drainage and of course, areas with rivers and creams, streams and creeks that could be starting to rise. did i mention how rainy and windy it's going to be because the winds really going pick up as you can see what you see, the areas of oranges and reds. that's where you get the strongest winds and in some areas well into the 30 mile per hour gusts range, including in the bay and also along the coastline and also in napa county and even toward contra costa county. future rainfall totals. most impressive, of course, we'll start to add to those accumulations, especially in the north bay. so quite rainy as we go through the workweek into tuesday into wednesday, you can see how the accumulations start to really increase and we start to

santa cruz. our cameras capturing ocean waves just surging in the stormy weather. santa cruz countyfficials activating their emergency operations center and are closing the santa cruz wharf and beaches until at least saturday morning. and in the area of soquel, well, there are road closures to tell you about due to rock and mudslides, all triggered by this storm. parts of several communities in santa cruz county, including felton and watsonville. they were under evacuation orders as the san lorenzo river approached flood stage. those orders, though, have since been lifted. now we want to go to the north bay and the heavy rain flooding roads here and also bringing down several trees. and we spoke with a family in marin county whose home was flooded during last week's storm. well, they are concerned that this more, more of this wet weather will lead to even more damage. >> i hired a team of people here yesterday that basically went into this open space and took out all of the wood and debris, and you can see piles of wood that we've created on areas of, of elevation. >> in santa rosa.

santa cruz pier this morning. and you heard kari talk about that high surf aisory. and because of that, the santa cruz pier is going to be closed today. almost all santa cruz countyl close today if they haven't been closed already. i want to show you some of the preps that were happening in capitola village as well.ou see some of those iconic buildings boarded up in anticipation of the rain, the waves that are expected to be up to 30ft between today and tomorrow, local businesses also filling sandbags. now, the fear is that some places that were just rebuilt and just reopened will be subject to the flooding here today. now in san jose, people were forced from their homes when the penitencia creek river ran its banks. the levels were already high and then there was debris and then a tree that blocked the flow. now people will be out of their 16 apartments for weeks, furniture and other belongings ruined, and there could be other trouble down the road. i was getting ready to walk out the door and i saw it coming from the creek over there, out into the middle of the street. and then i watched it come like right here where the cars are, and cars kept coming like this

a jury in santa cruz county reached a verdict on whether to release the man who confessed to raping and murdering eight year old maddie middleton nearly ten years ago. adrian gonzalez was 15 years old when he killed middleton. he has spent the last decade in juvenile custody, but petitioned the court for his release. under california law, which does allow offenders who were 15 or younger at the time of the crime to be released from juvenile custody on their 25th birthday. after a number of hearings, postponements, testimonies and court dates, a jury reached a verdict that gonzalez is still too dangerous to be released and will remain in custody for at least another two years. new at six oakland police say they've made an arrest in connection to a hit and run that killed a leading sociology scholar at uc berkeley. retired professor michael burrow was struck back on february 3rd while crossing grand avenue near lake merritt. police say 61 year old kermit miller was behind the wheel. adding they were able to link him to the crime after his hearing aid was located in the suspect's vehicle.

environmental effects of the moss landing battery plant, fire, soil, sediment and water testing in santa cruz countyere are no elevated metal levels related to the fire. the county says there was also no sign of any public health or food safety concerns. the results are consistent with similar tests taken more than a week ago. >> a salinas high school math teacher was back on the job today after students accused him of selling what he called test enhancing pills. apparently, he was put on leave while he was under investigation. parents found out from students, and one of them texted that the teacher claimed they needed to take 15 pills a week. when asked what was in the pills, the teacher apparently said it was a secret. the mother is outraged. >> to put that onto teenagers who are still learning, their brains are still developing, and you're normalizing drug use within a classroom in the middle of a fentanyl crisis. it's absurd. the lack of judgment, to me is astounding. >> now, it's unknown if any kids bought the pills. police are still investigating. the school conducted its own investigation, an

santa cruz mountains. add to that the atmospheric river that just hit, and the santa cruz county sheriff's office says it had no choice. we issued a mandatory evacuation order for the felton grove area. that is a very low lying area, flood prone area, but many residents declined the order. one resident told me off camera that this happens every year, and they know what to do because they're prepared, because they're used to it. they it happens every every year, every couple of years. but if you go down there, it's pretty, you know, the river is coming up quickly. so by noon the streets were seen standing water, but the san lorenzo was still within its banks, so residents stayed. that is the decision that is ultimately up to them. we can we can give orders and advice and advisories, but it is ultimately up to the families. the sheriff's office says the concern is if the river rises more and those residents end up trapped, then first responders have to risk their own safety to rescue them. it's pretty crazy. it's pretty close to the top of the bridge there. when we go out the back of the loading dock there, yo

meanwhile, in santa cruz county, lifeguards closed all beaches today because of potentially life threatening conditio, death and denied an education. some hard of hearing students in santa clara county tell us they're being passed through high school while still struggling with basic reading and math. they say the problem is systemic. they reached out to our investigative reporter candice nguyen with more candice. we have been talking to four deaf and hard of hearing students from the same santa clara county program. they say what's happening to them in high school is impacting the rest of their lives. these photos and videos show what could be at any high school kids on their phones. but twins leah and mina porritt say for deaf and hard of hearing students at lee high school, this hanging around and not learning plays out too often. they had this substitute teacher for two years. they say they couldn't learn from him because he didn't know sign language. having no teacher is like no support, no education. with the substitute, leah says she was often forced to interpret and it compromised he
