our business and tech reporter, scott budman, joins us now with what it means for business and for your budget. scott. the latest round of proposed tariffs could affect things that we touch in our everyday lives. for example, commercial real estate, places where we work. also, the cars we drive could soon cost more. and eventually here in the bay area, housing prices, the building blocks of america's homes, factories and businesses are about to get more expensive. any steel coming into the united states is going to have a 25% tariff. what about aluminum, sir?r? aluminum, too. the president's latest tariffs aimed at bringing more business to american steel and aluminum manufacturers. and it might work. likely there would be some shift to u.s. domestic steel, but given that will still need to import much of our building materials, the tariffs are likely to raise prices on everything from appliances to houses. so if you're buying a home and you are paying tariffs for the wood or the steel or the appliances that are going into the into the home, that's going to be passed to the end consumer

let's bring in our business and tech reporter scott budman. scott, what exactly are the tariffs on each country and why is president trump doing this. good question janelle. these are our three biggest trading partners canada, mexico and china. according to president trump from the oval office just today, 25% tariffs will be levied on certain items from both mexico and canada and 10% on certain items from china. what this means is the tariffs will be put on those items that we would buy from those countries, and we would have to pay more in order to buy them. and why is president trump doing this and leveling these tariffs? that's a really good question. it's like $1 trillion question because these are already trading partners. we have a lot of action with when it comes to buying and selling goods china. yeah there's sort of a cold war with them. we talk about that a lot when we talk about things like tiktok and deep sea, but with mexico and canada, we just trade back and forth all the time. president trump seemingly wants some leverage here.

let's bring in our business and tech reporter scott budman. okay, scott, tell us about this lawsuit. well, janelle, these two companies, as you say, very popular at bringing young people and really people of all ages online. they are accused of, although they have systems in place to try to keep safe if not having enough. and they are accused in a case where a 13 year old was on roblox and was approached by someone he didn't know was an adult, but who was an adult and who harassed him, got his address, was able to harass the family when and brought the conversation over to discord, and tried to get even closer to the young person before this was all discovered. and at this point, the lawsuit, which is also based here in the bay area, are accusing these companies of really enabling what they say, enabling people that are adults online to track and harm young people. both companies are local. roblox and san mateo discord in san francisco. have they responded yet to this lawsuit? so companies. i did hear back fromh roblox. they gave a statement t

scott budman breaks down these new numbers. but let's begin with pg&e, which is working to make major changes in the south bay. the utility wants to fix the power system near high fire risk areas to prevent repeated power outages to 10,000 customers. nbc bay area's ian cull was given an inside look at this new project underway. so what are they doing? yeah. so pg&e has safety triggers on its power lines in those high wildfire risk areas. and when a branch or tree hits them, it will cut off power immediately. they're called eps it. when it happens, neighborhoods around those areas would go dark sometimes when they didn't need to. and pg&e says nearly 10,000 customers were impacted. and the allman and santa teresa neighborhoods when the safety switches were tripped. so the company is trying to solve that problem by putting more than a mile of power lines underground, so the homes will have more reliable power. it essentially puts them on a new grid, so they're detached from that happening. neighbors say they're looking forward to

let's bring in our business and tech reporter scott budman with the details. scott, what do you got? well, raj, if you or your kids spend just about any time online, you're likely familiar with roblox and discord, both local one a gaming giant one a very popular chat app. both now hit with a lawsuit just days ago, claiming they make kids vulnerable to online predators. with almost 90 million daily users, roblox is huge in the gaming world, but the san mateo based company, along with san francisco based discord, are being sued for allegedly facilitating child sexual exploitation and abuse. both roblox and discord, we allege, were negligent in the services that they provided to our client, who's a 13 year old boy. two law firms, petrie and mccarthy and paul weiss, claim the two tech companies enable predators to hunt, find and exploit children online. line. the predator used a function of roblox, called a whisper function, that allowed him, as a complete stranger, to be in the game with our client and send it a direct message. and that's how the relationship, if

let's bring in our business and tech reporter, scott budman. what do you got, scott? well, raj wages are among the highest in the nation here. but as we talk about a lot, so are housing costs. and nowhere do people spend more of their income on housing than san jose. patricia smith, like a lot of people in silicon valley, makes a solid living. i make good income. but says high prices, high mortgage rates and multiple bids have kept her from buying a home here. and i have a group of friends, you know, all women single. and we've talked about moving somewhere and buying a house together. it might be a good idea to buy as a group, because it takes a surprising percentage of our income to afford a home. today, according to data from casa. san jose homeowner spend on average, almost eight out of every $10 they make on housing. compare that to san francisco and los angeles, and to the conventional wisdom that we should spend 30% of our income on housing, with experts saying they expect mortgage rates to stay high. people start realizing, maybe we won't get back to that 3% t

let's bring in our business tech reporter scott budman, to explain. and these are those reciprocal tariffs. yeah, jessica, the president calling these reciprocal reciprocal tariffs kind of a mouthful a little different from what we heard before. as in any charge added to something we sell overseas would be matched by a tariff on something we buy from that country. and it's not just tariffs here. the rule would also apply to any value added tax. now that is essentially a sales tax on a deal between countries. this is basically a tit for tat deal the president is talking about here. and it is separate from earlier proposed tariffs on china, canada and mexico. now you may remember those earlier tariffs on chinese goods have been put into place, while those from mexico and canada are paused amid ongoing discussions. all of this adds up to us likely paying more for things if these tariffs indeed become a reality. i think we can be heartened by the fact that the tariffs aren't taking effect immediately, if ever, that are threatened by the so-called reciproc
