yeah, you know, they're chained going over the sierra nevada now on 80 50.you got to watch out for that. the good news about the storm system that's coming through right now. yeah, it has of snow for a while and the high country, but the water content going to be much higher with this system that's coming through. it's left on some tropical moisture. so it could be that real wet snow coming in effect. you're seeing kind of a a snow rain mix right now. you're looking at diamond peak in tahoe right now. you see some of that snow there on tops of some of the benches there. but traveling up? they're going to be rough are going to see periods of heavy snow. i think especially tomorrow and some very gusty winds. a lot of part of the weekend into early next week. i think those winds really going to be with and maybe some 90 mile an hour winds across on the mountain tops. we're talking upwards of 2 feet of snow. so that's some good news across the higher peaks. in fact, between now in the middle of next week, some places maybe as much as 4 plus feet of snow, of cour

capitol correspondent eytan wallace has more from the sierra nevada. >> he's got a closer look there. >> well, there's good news and bad news. let's start with the good news here at the phillips station elevation. 6800 feet in the sierra nevada. it's snowing. it's been snowing since we got here this morning. but the bad news based on the snow survey just conducted here will need a lot more. where this came from. it's snow. it was a welcome sight for this california department of water resources team as they conducted the second snow survey of the season. the results show in california snowpack stands at 65% of average for this time of year and 40% of the historical statewide. april, first average, how you feeling about that? it's not good and you're icing as the california department of water resources, snow surveys and water supply forecast. a manager he helped facilitate the measurements here at the phillips station upper his results, the snow water content in this area stands at 8 inches and the snow depths down to 22 and a half inches. that's significant because the depth of the s

very heavy snow across across the sierra nevada. more snow continuing right through friday. then a weak system kind of sliding blew through late in the weekend to bring some more snow showers. boy, they're gonna have tremendous totals for maybe plus inches of snow or i should say feet of snow as we head throughout the next few days. all right, lawrence. well, a family has filed a lawsuit against bart over the death of a teenager in san francisco. >> according to court documents on january 28th of last year, the teen hopped onto the outside of the train to do what's called train surfing. that's when people ride on the outside of a moving train. this was the train was heading to glen park station. the lawsuit alleges that part and its train operator failed to have safety measures in place to prevent people from doing just that. and barr has much to worry about today. the transit agency announced they're currently running on emergency funds and they project to run out of money by 2026. bart says because of remote work, only 25% of operating costs are covered by passenger fares.

the southern sierra nevada get dumping of snow as well as that system rolls through. so traveling up, there is no joke the next couple of days. snow showers possibly for tomorrow. that'll be ramping up becoming heavy overnight on wednesday with some strong gusty winds and that snow continuing into friday, although that snow level start lower on friday as well far as snow amounts. yeah, maybe good 2 to 4 feet across some of the peaks therer maybe even more than that the highest peaks outside for us. kind of quiet out there right now. we have a weak weather system that's moving in tonight. this is the first of a couple storms that impact a bay area tonight. not so bad. just maybe some light showers tomorrow. increasing clouds throughout the day and then by tomorrow evening. that's when that real powerful storm because the move on rain becoming heavy overnight as we head in toward thursday. that's also going to generate some huge swells along the coastline. in fact, some of the swells, 2030 feet, maybe an occasional 45 footer. i mean, they are going to be found the rocks

now, more of that on the way and a whole lot of snow in the sierra nevada member.y had hardly any snow for much of january, but they picked up a couple of feet over the weekend and they're going to pick up a lot more with a series of storms headed their way now. so if you're headed up in that direction, winter storm warnings up as we head through 07:00am on wednesday. then likely get another one issues. we have another storm system moving in by wednesday night into thursday. so if you're planning on traveling the high country, tough going up there for tomorrow. think we dry things out least early on wednesday, wednesday night. that storm system moves in a much colder system that could drop that snow of all the way down to about 2500 feet. so yeah, we're gonna see a lot of snow coming our way again across the high country, up in the chest area to maybe 18 to 24 inches. there, maybe 2 to 3 feet the higher peaks of this year. so looking good out there for us. well, we've got that rain continuing to fall out there around the bay area, very slick out there on the roadwa

snow up in the sierra, nevada and yes spots. we've got some pretty decent downpour so far and just enough to get things going. but i think it's going to be the consistency of this rain as we head in toward late tonight and tomorrow morning, we're going to really start to pick up some pretty impressive totals. remember, this is a tapping some subtropical moisture you can see off the coastline. so the called the aloha glow sitting off the hawaiian islands. it's pumping all this moisture up and making that rain right toward the bay area where it's going to fix a and really dump a lot of rain over the next 24 hours. see a whole lot of that coming our way. in fact, you see on the models, you kind of see that trajectory giving that idea all that subtropical moisture just pouring into the bay area and it's going to keep going on and off throughout the day may be lifting a little bit by tomorrow afternoon, tons of snow in the sierra nevada to go along with that as well. but it could be one of those times where hunker down inside. enjoy

so it's been a really nice roll storms moving in across the sierra nevada. but right now, kind of a break you can see on the pacific storm clouds are well far away. and so that's why it's going to stay for now. long range forecast showing you as we get into saturday and sunday, you've got mostly clear skies and a dry pattern by monday. a few clouds begin to move in. so you don't have a real strong ridge building in the bay area. that means the doors open to more stormy weather. and as we get toward the middle of the week, here comes wednesday. things really begin to open up. the rain starts to move on shore. and again, this looks like a storm system that's going to tap some tropical moisture and possibly bring that into the bay area. much of the state this what i'm concerned about really the bay area, of course. but southern california. well, you are right going to be in that spot. we're expecting some of the heaviest rainfall from that storm system. the forecast long-range looking at above normal precipitation to that. her team and the 17th of the month. so

northern sierra nevada, over 100% of normal for this time of year. but we've got some work to do in central and southern sierra. so we're going to get to a little bit later on this yes, people are enjoying a beautiful weekend because some fresh snow, good powder. that's the base. kasia 108 inches at the summit sugar bowl. it's terrific there. and how about a look at north star again, great conditions throughout a skier. you're probably up there right now. enjoying yourself. we're going to add to this, but for tomorrow will keep things on the cool side even in the afternoon. and that means the snow is not likely to melt away. you're going to keep that snow going and the next 3 days we're going to go for some increasing clouds, mostly sunny, mostly, sunny. and then we're gonna start to look towards some snow showers. so our live camera network back here on this side of the bay bridge. we're looking at very cool conditions at our 3 day forecast does show again those increasing clouds starting monday, high, thin clouds, few more clouds coming in and then

this is a significant storm in the sierra nevada as well. but certainly the great skiing. once you get into the weekend, there's an avalanche warning in effect for the backcountry areas because, again, we have all that snow falling. it's fresh powder all falling on very icy conditions. so that's a real concern. forecast highs today, not a big rain shot upper 50's to low 60's. 57 degrees in vallejo, 60 in san francisco. and 61 degrees in san jose. a look ahead then shows that's the rainiest weather for today. and we could see in little bit of rain continuing tomorrow morning, but will be mostly morning clouds tomorrow and then we'll clear it out. look at your weekend. dry weather this year. return of sunshine. exactly what we need. we'll hold that dry conditions all the way through tuesday. and then wednesday looks like we've got more showers in the forecast. but but once we get through today, keep your rain coat handy. be careful when you drive with all that rain and the wind. it's a problem right all right. let's get you moving out there. looking at our ridges this mornin

but look, it's already heading up toward the sierra nevada, bringing some snow there and the highest elevations, maybe 2 to 3 feet of snow. but the concern is not just the wind and the snow and the traveling, but also avalanche possibilities. there's avalanche watch across the greater lake tahoe basin because we've all this heavy rain heading down and it could cause avalanches, which can move really, really fast. so here's the storm tracker and we could see additional rain is coming in our direction and that here's the area of the wind of flood watches and that's across marin county in sonoma county. again, guerneville at johnson's beach. that's an area of c%ncern. also, green valley creek is an area of concern. martinelli road and also other areas such as mark west creek at near the heights that's in flooded its flood stage as well. so a lot of a small streams and creeks are concerns. ponding on the roadways are also concerns even a slight possibility of flash flooding across the bay area. so the amounts of rain are pretty good. half an inch maybe to over an inch, but he's hit. it's
