south lake tahoe is ten. reno is 18.e heading shasta trinity, there's going to be some really low snow. look at this. this cold air is trapped. and so the snow level could be around 2000ft. you might even get some freezing rain right up around the oregon border just now for tahoe. it'll start off around 3000 504,000, then go up to 6000 before it starts to drop to 4500ft. but it's the shasta trinity area that you need to watch. rain returns add a little bit, but that low will strengthen and deepen right off the oregon california border. and then we'll get a roaring jet stream about 150 knots. and that will enhance some of this rainfall. you take this deep moisture, you know, lift it, cool it, condense it, and boy, you can get some wring out some pretty big totals, santa cruz mountains. but i'll say everyone, i mean, i mean, even look at livermore and concord, if they get that much, that's, you know, that's a big system for them. heavy rain likely though, especially tomorrow, 4 to 6, maybe seven. isolated 7 or 8 would not

in truckee, 22 reno and south lake tahoe.e lone outpost out there at four cold degrees system will swing across now. low will deepen, especially as we head towards thursday. that, along with a rip roaring jet stream, will usher in some rather impressive rainfall rates and also high elevation snow. snow levels should get down to 4000ft, and you can see where the line is being drawn. ben lomond, santa cruz, morgan hill more than others, although even areas to the north and east. if you see almost two for concord and livermore, that's it takes a big system to do that. it really does. and not only here, but look in central san luis obispo, santa barbara, la. that's going to cause problems, no doubt about it. but mountain snow, which is really kind of been an also ran. this one does look rather impressive. multiple feet by the time we get to the weekend. so one more sunny day, mainly in the morning, then clouds in the afternoon, frost advisories out and we'll get some light rain late tonight. kind of about san francisco, san mateo

we'll show you what's happening up there right now at south lake tahoe. here's the problem. it's 45 degrees. and the low this morning was 38. you are not going to get lake level snow like that. but look what's coming in the next five days. temperatures starting to cool down. snow on the increase as we move forward. you get heavy snow on tuesday and more at elevations down to 4 or 5000ft. thursday into friday. so you just heard how the sierra snowpack is sitting at 65% of average statewide. if this verifies 4 to 5ft of snow in the higher elevations, we might boost that average closer to 70%, maybe 75%, in another week or so. stay tuned. february so far starting off pretty good for the sierra. now closer to home. no snow here. we're going to have increasing rain later tomorrow. wind also increasing during the day, and those colder temperatures might just be cold enough by friday morning to see snow locally near 4000ft. right now it's not cold in the mornings. that's going to change later on. we'll get lows in the 30s back in the bay area, but not tomorrow morning. we wake up t

lake tahoe, you're looking at some dry conditions right now. a couple high clouds moving up above the temperatures. not all that bad. it's a little chilly in spots. 40 degrees. south lake tahoe. 36 in climb and 37 degrees right truckee, if you plan to head up there, here's a crop for ski report heavily. you've got 79 inches on the summit, had another inch of snow last night and they've got 114 trails all wide open there for you to enjoy the palisades 136 inches at the summit. they've got plenty of lips going. there are 192 trails out there as well. and how our friends at sugar bowl 139 inches and 73 trails for you to get out there and enjoy. of course, all that fresh snow up there. and you know what? the roadways are going to cooperate to. that's been part of the trouble is winters. the storm's been rolling on through just hard to get up there. but now roadways open and clear. maybe some patchy fog in the morning conditions. little spring-like as you head toward the afternoon over the slopes, high-pressure trying to build in here. you can see the jet stream moving to the north and that is going to be the track of the coming storms in the pacific northwest. they're

a view of south lake tahoe right now, 32 degrees.me to go up to the sierra was this weekend. look at the dry conditions, chilly temperatures, cold nights, all the snow that fell this week. locked in with that cold weather up there across the sierra. and this is pretty interesting. on the satellite view you can actually see all the snow there across the central and southern sierra, courtesy of the storms this week. but notice we're not seeing any incoming storms right now. once you lose the clouds and the moisture, which typically kind of acts like a blanket, you bring in the cool, dry air, you get mornings like this with upper 20s and low 30s across our inland valleys for tomorrow morning, temperatures rebounding during the day, similar to what we had today. mid to upper 50s from san francisco to oakland. might get closer to 60 around south san jose andpper 50s down towards santa cruz. now the pattern change should occur as we get into tuesday night and wednesday. you begin to see rain approaching the coast, and right now the timing

state water officials held a survey at the phillips station near south lake tahoe. it is snowing hard there right now, as you can see in this video, but an excessively dry january has left snowpack levels at just 46% of average. it gives us a snapshot of how much we might expect to fill our reservoirs when the snow melts, and how quickly things can change. just a month ago, levels were at more than 100% of average in this same location. as you can see, when we don't accumulate some snow or rain, it. it definitely hurts our our snowpack and it requires us to catch up. statewide, the snowpack is at 65% of average for this time of year, but an upcoming storm is expected to drop several inches of rain and snow across northern california. an alarming discovery from space nasa and the european space agency say they found an asteroid in the cosmos with a very slim chance of hitting earth. astronomers say there is a 1.2% chance the rock will hit earth in december of 2032. there is some good news. that also means the rock has a nearly 99% chance of safely just passing by ear

tuesday rescue crews found the body of 46-year-old frederick dross of south lake tahoe around powder house peak, an area popular with backcountry skiers off highway 89 between meyers and hope valley. his wife reported him missing monday and it took hours just to reach the man because of snowy conditions. >> the helicopter, we hoisted the victim out to bring him back. some blasting had to be done to mitigate the avalanche risk before we could put people on the ground where the victim was. >> first responders are urging all experienced and novice backcountry skiers to not go out in hazardous conditions. >>> a new effort to collect data on atmospheric rivers like the recent systems that hit the bay area the past couple weeks is a partnership spanning several agencies, uba water, the department of water resources and u.s. air force and scripps institute of oceanography. the study is using these heavy duty hurricane planes. they're measuring how much rain might hit california. the data is expected to help determine the best plan for water management in the state. >> if we've had a couple

it was a beautiful day in south lake tahoe. skiers and snowboarders hitting the slopes.s you can see there at heavenly ski resort. taking advantage of some of those great conditions. >> it is a beautiful day today. it's been fantastic, but i just love it here. >> we had a really cold, great start to november. we were able to get interstate connection between california and nevada, and in the month of november had over 90% of the mountain open at the new year, and we just had over two feet of snow in the last week. so conditions are incredible right now. >> meteorologist mark tamayo joins us now. snow up there and a little bit of a break in the rain here. >> yeah it's working out nicely to head to the sierra because that snow has moved on out to clear to get up over the summit. and for us here in the bay area. no rain this weekend. so good news if you like sunshine. really nice bundle up though tonight because it's some pretty cold numbers of overnight. a freeze warning posted for the north bay valleys tomorrow morning. temperatures will be in the upper 20s to lower 30s.

just going to stay that way all weekend long. 28 degrees right now in south lake tahoe. 28 in truckee. 28 in incline. 39 degrees in reno on the big picture. but, yep, we've got drier conditions begin to settle in. now, the storm system winding down the high country and much of northern california starting to catch that break in the stormy weather pattern. but it's going to come back again. so let's enjoy this while we have it, i think should be a great ski weekend. maybe the best. the weekend of the year. so far we've got all that fresh powder in this last storm that came through as a cold storm. that means you really got that nice. fresh, powdery snow that is falling on the slopes there and the temperatures by day only in the 30's to get over those mountains near freezing. so it's not going to be slushy during the middle of the day. just great skiing conditions all day long by monday, a few more clouds begin to roll in. let's get out. your ski report for palace say they had 17 inches of snow in last 24 hours. they've got 111 inches at the summit. if you want to head to anoaher place,

south lake tahoe currently 32 degrees.t this will not cause problems on the roadways. just about an inch or so coming in with some flurries during the day sunday. so the travel forecast as folks head home from the sierra looks pretty good. a little bit of snow at times on sunday. not the several feet of snow we saw earlier in the week. and then skies turn clear and dry as we head into monday. right now, 58 degrees in san jose. overcast skieover the santa clara valley. more of that as you head up to walnut creek, where it's currently 60 degrees, and dry conditions continue in san rafael at 56 and into san francisco. gray overcast skies at 59 degrees. we'll wrap up the weekend with a little bit of rain, and we're talking low rain totals. not inches of rain, but maybe a quarter inch of rain in the wettest locations of the north bay. another chance arriving wednesday, and then mayb some spring like temperatures showing up in that 7-day forecast coming up in just a minute. morning temperatures tomorrow. starting off in the 40s.

it is 28 degrees right now in south lake tahoe. 29 incline and 30 degrees in truckee. the pattern begin to shift gears. that storm pattern has moved on out. you can see kind of rolling on in there over the last 24 hours. things settling down now. and so we're getting really ready for maybe one of the nicest weekend of skiing of the season. temperatures going to be chilly in the 30's. that's gonna hold that snow in place of the peaks is not to get slushy by the middle of the day. and by monday, a few clouds begin to roll in. after that, the weather starts to get interesting. all right. let's check out your kron 4 ski report and the palisades. yep. they've got 111 inches on the ground. inches in the last 24 hours. how about our friends at heavenly? they've got 57 inches on the ground. 7 inches over the last 24 hours and plenty of lifts and trails are currently open there. and our friends at northstar 81 inches on the ground at the summit. 9 inches of packed powder to enjoy and they've got 89 trails to get out there, too. so things are going to get active again. but this

. >> here identified as 46 year-old south lake tahoe resident, frederick dross. >> was last seen on powder house peak an area just south of lake tahoe. we didn't return. search and rescue teams were called in, but before they could begin their search. friends of the scare made a heartbreaking discovery. its body was found in an avalanche zone with unstable snow conditions. authorities postponed the recovery effort until early tuesday morning. starting at 06:00am teams youth controlled explosives to reduce the risk of another avalanche before moving in, i spoke with the man who showed me a video from his phone of the rescue scene showing the coordinated efforts to bring dross home by 05:00pm. after hours of careful maneuvering crews successfully brought the victim out of the back country. the eldorado county sheriff's office credits multiple agencies, including the sierra avalanche center, u.s. forest service and caltrans. for making the recovery possible. officials are reminding the public of the dangers in the sierra. >> a new study says parts of the bay area are going down literally usin

the potential of about 23in of snow in south lake tahoe and in kingvale 48in of snow will be possiblere in the bay area. we're seeing a lot of clouds with rain returning much more of the heavier downpours expected later tonight into early tomorrow. and at that time we may have some gusty winds that could pick up anywhere from 15 to 30mph and may peak at 45. and some of the hills and upper elevations. and then, looking ahead the next storm, there will be colder temperatures and snow levels coming down to 4000ft, which includes the bay area. over the weekend. we had so much rain in the north bay, and that's where the bulk of these higher rainfall totals were. w we had over four inchesf rainfall in calistoga, while san francisco had an inch of rain. it was about the same as in oakland. and then for san jose, we're in that rain shadow. we really didn't have a lot here, but it was raining very heavily in the santa cruz mountains, measuring anywhere from two to close to four inches of rainfall, and mount tam in the north bay had over 11in of rain. so now that system has lifted to the north,

however, depending on what happens in the south lake tahoe area inching into wednesday evening, we've got this cold front dipping down, and it does look like we'll get a bit of a wintry mix, so that could impact some travel conditions. inching into thursday and friday, we get a ridge of high pressure that once again keeps unice and dry. but also that's what's going to bring the warmth now as that cold front drops down on wednesday, we're not going to see majority of the impacts out of it, with the exception of some wind notice heading into tonight, we're going to stay relatively calm with the wind speeds. but as we inch kind of stretching ahead into that wednesday forecast, it does look like we'll see some wind picking up, especially for areas in the north bay. notice 22 plus mile per hour winds around san francisco. it's going to fall below that wind. advisory criteria, not expecting any gusts upwards of 40 or 50. and i mentioned sierra snow. and it does look like with that wintry mix we could get just a couple of inches of snow for some of those higher elevations inching into that k

truckee, south lake tahoe, ukiah at 3657 5455 santa barbara, la.bit of activity. see still to the north associated with that cold pool up there. so some of that, you know, the days you get a little more afternoon sun angle, the sun's a little higher, a little longer could get some buildups. that's your next system to the far left that will be here tomorrow for one more round of rain. it is not as strong, but right now the soils are, you know, they're saturated. so any rain, another half inch to an inch or two. certainly bears watching here. we'll get a break on the weekend. but some of the forecast models are really producing some big time rain again middle and end of next week. so it's something to watch here going forward. i can see clearly now morning sun a few afternoon clouds, highs though only in the 50s you guys. >> all right steve thank you. our time is now 553 today, a new executive order is expected from president trump about transgender athletes. we'll look at what that order is i bought the team! kevin... ? i put it on my chase freedom

south lake tahoe eight. really low snow levels with some of that cold air trapped, especially for the trinities. if you're heading up that way, watch out. could be down below 2000ft. rain returns tonight and really picks up tomorrow. that will be the focus. strong jet stream is going to punch in. also, a low level jet around 5000ft will really enhance rainfall amounts. i'm almost ready to say the heaviest rain will be. it could be anywhere from around russian river, mount tam, tamalpais to the santa cruz mountains, but it does look like those areas could easily get 4 to 5, maybe six. and this looks like all systems go for the biggest snowstorm of the season up in the mountains. winter storm warning has already been posted, so mostly cloudy, maybe a few breaks obscured by clouds this morning. clouds will continue to roll in and rain moves in tonight. and it will be a steady rain and it will be a hard rain. could be some three quarter inch to upwards of one inch per hour. rainfall rates with the cold front on

that south lake tahoe that it is a wintry look at south lake tahoe. >> that could be alaska. >> it you're right. that is a wintry look over lake tahoe this morning. but notice guys no snow on those trees. and that means the snow level is above the lake. the lake sits right about 6000 6200ft or so. and so. yes. but then you get up over the passes and you've got snow. so this is a warm storm, as we are talking about now for the next 24 to 48 hours, a colder storm is dropping in on monday and that is going to change things up a bit. but for the weekend, snow levels are expected to remain around 7000ft even above, in fact, below 7000ft, 6500ft and below there is a flood watch for the sierra foothills, very similar to what we're experiencing here. anywhere from 1 to 2ft of snow for the higher peaks. and that that does include where most of those ski resorts are. so that is again good news for the skiers. here's a view of storm tracker two. light rain falling over the north bay. and you can see it is widespread. as we shift a little bit over towards the san francisco oakland. we've got light sc

now, the temperatures are too warm right now at south lake tahoe at 49 degrees to see that snow at lake level. but that is set to change over the next five days. we have daily opportunities of seeing snow at times and heavy snow at that. starting to move into areas along the interstate 80 corridor. and as we go through the next few days, through the end of the week, 4 to 5ft of snow expected to come down over the sierra. keep that in mind with this winter storm warnings up. interstate 80, highway 50. we're likely to see some delays if you're going there between now and wednesday morning. but the silver lining to all of this is if that forecast holds by this time next week, we could see the sierra snowpack closer to 75 to even 80% of average as the new storms keep rolling in. janelle. that's good. that's all good news. okay. thank you so much, rob. now to some other local news. santa clara county is now suing over a dozen companies for exposing people to so-called forever chemicals. lawyers claim the companies have sparked an environmental and health crisis after the chemicals were detec

but we could still get another two feet of snow in south lake tahoe and in kirkwood, about 38in of snowtop of what we've already measured, getting some pretty high and significant snowfall totals there. and then for the bay area, look how sloppy it is as we take a live look outside in san rafael in the santa cruz mountains. uvas canyon, we've had over 5.5in of rainfall. and ben lomond, it was over four inches so far and it continues. woodside about 3.25in of rainfall. kentfield over three inches of rain there in the east bay. mount diablo racking up over two inches of rainfall, and vacaville about 2.3. so we are still seeing some additional rainfall that is coming down across the state. and a closer look at the bay area does show all of this activity, with some waves of heavy rain picking up again in the last hour or so and sweeping across the bay area. so that's exactly what we're expecting for the rest of today, with some breaks here and there, but also more waves of rain coming through. and we can see it is once again widespread for the north bay, where earlier this morning we did se
