let's take you to tahoe.ling right now and this winter storm is just getting started. we have a winter storm warning in effect this until tomorrow, so do not try to go to tahoe today or even tomorrow. wait until saturday because we have feet of snow coming. it's going to take time to clear some of the snow from our roads. so take a look. look at these impressive numbers we have coming our way. this is likely the biggest snow storm of the season. you'll notice a snowfall totals measured in feet on some of our highest peaks like donner and kirkwood. snowfall levels are fluctuating around five 6000ft, so even blue canyon could get close to a foot of snow lake level. we're talking 1 to 2ft of snow back here at home. live doppler seven is showing you we have just been in out of the heavy rain all morning long. we've seen 1 to 4in of rain already. that is causing a lot of issues out there when it comes to standing water on our roads, and even the potential for flash flooding in the santa cruz mountains. that's wher

south lake tahoe is ten. reno is 18.e heading shasta trinity, there's going to be some really low snow. look at this. this cold air is trapped. and so the snow level could be around 2000ft. you might even get some freezing rain right up around the oregon border just now for tahoe. it'll start off around 3000 504,000, then go up to 6000 before it starts to drop to 4500ft. but it's the shasta trinity area that you need to watch. rain returns add a little bit, but that low will strengthen and deepen right off the oregon california border. and then we'll get a roaring jet stream about 150 knots. and that will enhance some of this rainfall. you take this deep moisture, you know, lift it, cool it, condense it, and boy, you can get some wring out some pretty big totals, santa cruz mountains. but i'll say everyone, i mean, i mean, even look at livermore and concord, if they get that much, that's, you know, that's a big system for them. heavy rain likely though, especially tomorrow, 4 to 6, maybe seven. isolated 7 or 8 would not

a husband and father of two from south lake tahoe.ing on monday after he went skiing in the backcountry around powderhouse peak. police say his friends were able to find him through his avalanche transponder because of hazardous conditions. the sheriff's office couldn't retrieve his body until yesterday. >> the helicopter was what? ultimately, we hoisted the victim out to bring him back. some blasting had to be done to mitigate the avalanche risk. before we could put people on the ground where the victim was. so we use the helicopter to scan the area and warn anybody in the area to leave so that that blasting could be done. >> backcountry skiing is becoming increasingly popular with people who want to avoid crowded resorts, and that has safety officials warning about the potential dangers if anything goes wrong while skiing in the backcountry. there are no emergency crews on hand, self service is spotty and help could be hours away, according to the colorado avalanche information center. more than 230 people in the united states were

the tahoe donner snow reported showing that more than 8 inches fell in 12 hours. and it's only going to continue. reporter chloe curtis shows us. >> what the conditions are like there. if you're traveling through placer county. >> we prepared for wet, icy and snowy conditions along i-80 today. snow is just blanketing parts of the freeway, which is why caltrans is enforcing a chain controls. right now. we are along. it's near cisco grove, where those chain controls are now, in effect, you can see several trucks wind up where drivers are working to get those chains on to those chp lights off in the distance and caltrans and chp, they've been staying busy today. one making sure that drivers are prepared. if they do have to be on the roads, but also responding to several incidents. chp truckee has responded to several spinouts, including near the donner summit area. we were at the scene earlier when there is a bit of a traffic jam involving several trucks that had chains on but just couldn't get up the steep grade based on just all the ice and snow on the roads. there

tell us about some of the weather conditions happening now in tahoe. we see the flakes falling pretty quickly there. >> yeah, it's starting to snow. good. now is it really set in? we had rainfall this morning coming in a little bit heavy right around 430 5:00 this morning. but just about two hours ago it really started to set in. temperatures dropped. we're looking at about 28 degrees and we're just above lake level right here. i looked at some of the resorts anywhere above 7800ft. we've already seen 6 to 8in of snow accumulation at 7800. and now if you go up above that, you're probably seeing already nine inches to up to a foot right now. winds blowing anywhere 30 to 40 miles an hour. but we saw ridgetop gusts today, just around 86 to 96 miles an hour over kirkwood and down towards bear valley. ebbetts pass, 7680 miles an hour. so it's great news for the snow pack and for skiers and riders as we go into the president's day weekend. >> yeah, getting some good fresh powder out there right now. you did mention coop, the wind gusts. and we know that can s

the lake tahoe area is under.hat starts tonight at 10 o'clock and goes through friday at 10 o'clock. heavy snow expected. and we're talking up at the peaks, the very top 2 to 4 feet of additional snow, not just for us, but also down through central sierra and southern sierra, too. so here we go. the rain comes in tonight and you do see a little that wintry precipitation thereof in the north bay mountains. and then we start to see a really get going as we get into about 10 o'clock. 11 o'clock tonight goes right through into tomorrow. and it just keeps rolling. this is going to be a well-funded system with lots of moisture to work with. so there's your friday morning and then things start to wrap up as we get later into the day on friday. so that would be your chance to go right either. right now or maybe late friday, early saturday will be your best bet. but it's going to be an oppressive system. no doubt about it. did want to mention that we once again do have an avalanche watch up. and this does include a good po

that's the average snowfall in the tahoe basin. so he take it over a 20 year span.n we've had 700 and almost 900 inches. but if you really look at it, 3.96 is the sweet spot for us to head. and we're close to that. well, some resorts a pond on are some very good grant. quick question because very interesting systems. there's early systems that came through. i mean, from the hit, the house here up to donner is 45 miles. as the crow flies during that one storm, they had 32 inches up on top of donner. we had probably 2 centimeters here. so the storms up north. when you look at like sugar bowl's annual snowfall, there are about 250 inches season to date shifted down towards south shore. kirkwood broadly one. 85 bear valley, one. 85. and if you go to fresno, though, china peak is at 2.25. so it's just been interesting how these storms have come in and laid the snowfall. what we really need is that 3.96, we need to build that snow pack up because once we get into summer, wildfire season begins and we need that water. we need that water. we need it for the snow pack we nee

the toyota tahoe report is ready.'s head over to the map. >> our latest atmospheric river is bringing tons of snow to the high sierra. some of the higher elevations are picking up a few feet of snow just today. you're looking at the additional snow amounts in the forecast for friday. travel has been essentially impossible today. that will be the case most of friday even with lighter snow overall. the light snow will wind down by late friday afternoon, so crews should be able to clear the roads friday night into early saturday morning. weather in the mountains for presidents weekend, lows in the teens and 20s with highs mostly in the 30s, a mix of clouds and sunshine saturday, a light rain/snow mix sunday into early monday. the rain/snow line around 6,000 to 7,000 feet. that system does not look substantial. we'll keep you updated on the conditions here in the toyota tahoe report. heidi covey: so, i have an eye disease that causes blindness. i have moments where i get a little bit sad because i just can't see things th

this is a live look at palisades tahoe. it's going to be good skiing in a couple of days when all the powder gets down there. a lot moved in. that storm is here and more is expected on thursday and friday. our team of meteorologists tracking an eventful forecast. let's start with our chief meteorologist, jeff ranieri. hi, jeff. yeah. hey. and you know, this is the same atmospheric river we had starting to get here last week, and it's just been kind of moving to the north, moving to the south and back off to the north. but it's not only the atmospheric river. we also have this system tying in with it, and that's pulling in the moiure. but the third component that's going to help to bring us some heavy rainfall as we move through tomorrow, is this stationary front that's going to stall out. and that's how we could get in, get in on totals up to about three inches. let me get you more details on that microclimate forecast. and we are going to take it right to storm ranger, an excellent tool to show you where the rain is moving
