hired some engineers to analyze the material san francisco was sending to landfill. they did a waste characterization study, and that showed that most of the material san francisco was sending to landfill could be composted. it was things like food scraps, coffee grounds and egg shells and sticks and leaves from gardening. together re-ecology in san francisco started this curbside composting program and we were the first city in the country to collect food scraps separately from other trash and turn them into compost. it turns out it was one of the best things we ever did. it kept 2.5 million tons of material out of the landfill, produced a beautiful nutrient rich compost that has gone on to hundreds of farms, orchards and vineyards. so in that way you can manage your food scraps and produce far less methane. that is part of the solution. that gives people hope that we're doing something to slow down climate change. >> i have been into organic farming my whole life. when we started planting trees, it was natural to have compost from re-ecology. compost is how i work a

the san francisco police department, all criminal matters are dealt with by the san francisco district attorney . we handle all civil matters on behalf of the city and county of san francisco. what that means is a number of things. we provide advice and counsel to all actors within city government from our mayor. every member of the board of supervisors to the 100 plus departments, commissions boards that represent the city and county of san francisco. we also defend the city against thousands of lawsuits. so if you slip and fall in front of city hall if there's a bus accident if there is an incident involving the san francisco police department, we defend those matters. we also bring lawsuits on behalf of the city and county of san francisco, where most famous for litigating and obtaining the constitutional right to marry for lgbtq couples have sued gun manufacturers, payday lenders, oil companies, you name it, who are undercutting the rights of san franciscans and the city and county of san francisco. so now moving on to the opioid crisis. i understand you've had some success in cour

back in 2003 we did the history in san francisco history. three hundred and innovators of historical and culture society. you'll see the plazas at o ferry terminal street 64 people we use their folks and the relatives. so when we designed it i said we need people in the community to actually do the interviews. so after specifically gang members. one of them to get a picture of the community they live in this is after 2003. so 2007 some of you in law enforcement remember. there was a gang war in western edition. 7 young men got shot at the same spot. in a twenty-four hour period and somebody should figure out maybe; right? but that's how bad things got. so we went out to all the shot callers all of the collectionist in the western edition someone was a shot caller and we talked in the middle of night and tell him the people that those complexed remain. because all of work of them were names for people that are active in building the community. not that your not representing - and so and dr. brown remembers we talked and had a circle of elders

heartbreaking news at the san francisco zoo tonight. he zoo and its visitors are mourning the death of its silverback gorilla, oscar. nbc bay area's jocelyn moran is in san francisco with what happened to oscar? oscar had been at the san francisco zoo since 2004. he was loved by staff and visitors at 43. he was the third oldest male of his species living in a u.s. zoo. the san francisco zoo announced friday the death of its beloved western lowland gorilla, oscar jonesy. reaction pouring in on social media. zoo visitors commenting he was the highlight of their visits. one person saying his wise eyes were a reflection of his soul. in a statement, the zoo ceo and executive director said, quote, we are heartbroken by the loss of oscar. he was truly an amazing ambassador for this critically endangered species and a favorite among staff, guests and volunteers alike. oscar underwent a medical procedure thursday afternoon. the chief veterinarian said the procedure went well and he was being monitored during recovery from anesthesia by a vet. tha
