abc's trevor ault leads us off on the breaking news. >> reporter: tonight, after a desperate search, the coast guard says they've located an aircraft matching the description of the missing passenger plane that vanished over open water in alaska with ten people on board. authorities releasing this image of mangled wreckage. they say three bodies were found inside. the bering air single-engine cessna took off shortly after 2:30 thursday afternoon, headed for nome. about 40 minutes in into the flight, disappearing from radar over the norton sound about 12 miles from shore. >> low altitude alert bering air 445. >> reporter: seconds later -- >> bering air 445, anchorage center, radio contact lost. >> this aircraft experienced some kind of event which caused them to experience a rapid loss in elevation and a rapid loss in speed. >> reporter: this time-lapse video from hours after the plane vanished shows snowy conditions at the nome airport where the plane was headed. atc telling the pilot the runway was temporarily closed as the plane approached. >> one of the things ntsb will look at, w

here's trevor ault. >> reporter: tonight, eye-opening new details of what may have led to january's deadly crash between an american airlines plane and a blackhawk helicopter. ntsb revealing that helicopter was too high, 278 feet at the time of the collision, when the allowed altitude near the airport is just 200 feet. but the ntsb also says it's possible the cockpit computers may have given them bad data about how high they were flying, pointing to comments minutes before the crash. >> the pilot flying indicated they were at 300 feet. the instructor pilot indicated they were at 400 feet. neither pilot made a comment discussing an altitude discrepancy. >> reporter: investigators also say there may have been a critical miscommunication that, the pilots may not have heard this audio of the air traffic controller telling them to avoid the incoming plane, a crj. the black boxes reveal the helicopter pilots were trying to speak to air traffic control at the same time, stepping on the audio of that crucial warning. david, the ntsb says these blackhawk pilots were in the midst of a night vision g

abc's trevor ault leading us off tonight. >> luigi! >> reporter: tonight, this was the scene outside a new york city courthouse. a crowd of supporters, many angry at the health care system, hoping to catch a glimpse of accused killer luigi mangione. their chants heard all the way up on the 15th floor where supporters packed the hallway for mangione's first court appearance in months. the case, a cultural flashpoint. the young suspect seeming to garner more sympathy than the man he's accused of murdering. some mangione supporters going so far as to put up bill lowereds "free luigi, who's a hero." in court today, mangione wearing a bullet-proof vest surrounded by officers, sitting before the judge shackled at the ankle and handcuffed. his attorney arguing images like this will make it difficult for mangione to get a fair trial. >> he is being publicly treated as guilty. and as having the presumption of guilt. as opposed to the presumption of innocence. which is what he is entitled to. >> reporter: mangione pleaded not guilty to charges h

trevor ault join us with more. good morning, trevor. >> reporter: good morning, robin.e're learning some pilots and air traffic controllers had been expressing their concern about how close the airplanes and helicopters are flying at reagan national airport, including two reports describing this setup as an accident waiting to happen. this morning abc news learned at least 15 incidents of close calls at reagan national airport, eerily similar to last week's deadly american airlines and blackhawk crash. these reports go back as far as 1991. pilots and air traffic controllers notifying authorities of planes and helicopters flying dangerously close to one another prompting one pilot to call dca probably the most dangerous airport in the united states. >> these pilot reports dating back years show at least three or four examples of the same setup that led to the american crash, same very close calls and nothing was ever done about it. >> reporter: in 2013, one pilot reporting a helicopter flying 200 feet below them, saying the faa allows these aircraft to operate in this en
