happy to see you. >> let's talk about san francisco right now and santa clara county suing the trump administration over its policy to try to punish sanctuary cities and basically withhold funds. is there a constitutional argument to that? >> so let's be clear. this happened in trump's first administration and san francisco sued and they won. the law is actually very clear that the federal government cannot compel state and local officials to do anything to execute federal law. so if san francisco wants to have a policy that says nobody can assist in the federal immigration efforts, that's a sanctuary city, this case from, you know, 1997 says they can't make you do it. now obviously you can't obstruct justice. you can't obstruct whatever the feds are doing, but you don't have to help. >> okay. so you think that once again, this lawsuit has some merit. how long do you think it will take it to go through the court system? >> well, in san francisco it shouldn't take very long. first, you've got a precedent that's right on point. second, you've got some friendly judges. we are a jurisdiction -- you kno

there have been a variety of, well, just many actions taken by the trump administration so far that have resulted in legal challenges and some that have been successful that are still in progress. i just want to talk about one of them. the administration had argued for a temporary pause in funding while it examines spending practices. this was a statement from the former acting director of the office of management budget, matthew veith. i should say that we have now a current acting omb director, russ vought, who was confirmed on thursday night. but back in juary, what the omb was saying was in the interim, to the extent rmissible under appe law, federal agencies must temporarily pause al activitie related to obligation or disbursement of all federal financial assistance and oer relevant aactities that may be implicated by the executive orders. this temporaryprove the administration timto review e best uses othe funding fore those programs consistent with the law and the president's priorities. this created a lot of backlash. what is your take on the legality of this approach? well, it's

the first thing the trump administration did was follow all of the ig's across the board. windows came in the ig's were already gone. instead of consulting with the people doing these investigations -- and some of these investigations might have been, you know, midway down, they be not even completed -- they fired them and move them out and decided to start from scratch. they brought in a group of people that did not have any kind of investigation experience. the other part of it is none of them seem to have gone through any kind of vetting process. they don't seem to have security clearances and are being given access to highly personal information. medical data that we don't want to necessarily have made available for any circumstances whatsoever. you want to make sure the people that see it have the clearances and protections to handle it in the right way. the biggest issue with the musk effort is he has obvious conflicts of interest. he owns businesses that are doing work with the government and have major contracts and there are open investigations with respect to two

how likely is it that the trump administration could simply defy formal court orders? >> i think. >> the trump white house is setting the stage to defy federal courts. and listen, there's some precedent here. i don't want to overstate it. you know, joe biden did challenge the courts on the student loan relief in his presidency. but i think, broadly speaking, the second trump term is really about stretching the parameters of the executive branch, seeing how far he can go as president and within reason. that's his authority. and i think congress has largely ceded its authority, whether it's the power of the purse, whether it's even challenging any of his cabinet secretaries. but the courts have seemed quicker to intervene. i think you are going to see this will not be the first or last time that you're going to see this white house potentially challenging these these judges rulings. >> yeah, it's a potentially very, very significant development indeed. laura coates what do you make of this federal judge accusing the trump administration of violating his order? is there an

the question here is does the trump administration comply with this order? the white house and they did not answer. there are suggestions from people like vice president pence and elon musk that they think the administration should defy the court orders. amna: you mentioned the national institutes of health. on friday night, the trump administration announced it was cutting billions of dollars in nih funding. we just saw a temporary legal victory for the case to let those funds move ahead. what should we understand about that case and its impact? laura: a second judge has said moments ago that the administration needs to release that funding for the national institutes of health. that goes to medical centers, universities, and it funds research for things like cancer, heart disease, and diabetes. they said the administration needs to show within 24 hours that they have released those funds, they have to show that on an ongoing basis. essentially, the states argue this is lifesaving research that is being held up because of this block. amna: we see mr. trump a

and what does the current trump administration's relationship with them look like?st: it's a really good question because it's one of the most complicated issues before the trump administration. obviously, the main countries of deportation, we have a well oiled machine with them. mexico, guatemala, some countries in south america to ecuador and honduras. the big problem is venezuela. that regime has not been in good relations with washington for at least a decade or so and categorically refuses to take its citizens back. it's a really big problem because, especially in the last few years, we are not seeing regular venezuelan refugees. we have seen in that flow, a relatively small but significant number of gang members. those people, i don't want to downplay it, they are genuinely pretty dangerous people. a lot of them have been arrested or are in jail in the u.s. but, we have nowhere to put those people. if you have that person, we can't deport them even the we want to. they have to make the tough decision of holding somebody indefinitely in jail in a precious deten

the federal judge has blocked most trump administration officials from accessing treasury records. the playbook here seems to be for the trump team to kind of move fast and get in before the courts can stop them. >> i think you're absolutely right. i mean, doge particularly raises so many questions about what elon musk's real authority is, what type of sensitive information he has access to. federal judge said in his ruling that by handing over treasury's payment and data systems to musk's team, there was a possibility of doing irreparable harm, which is really strong language and, you know, just practically giving basically full access to the federal government data to aides who work for musk really should raise alarm bells. but i think you're right. i mean, musk is sort of going in there quick, try to attack. right. flood the zone very, very fast. and essentially, you know, democrats are going to have to rely on the court system to block this, which tends to be quite slow. >> are you getting any sense that there might be opposition brewing from any republicans to what musk is doin
