nbc's aaron gilchrist is at reagan washington national airport with more on this. aaron, when are officials expecting to learn some more information about the data recovered from the black boxes, and when are we going to hear about it? >> well, the expectation is that they'll be able to learn more information very soon from all three of the data points, data collection points that they're trying to assess. i do want to mention, though, that we expect a news briefing to start here with dc unified command. the people who are in charge of the search, recovery and salvage operation, that should start in about 20 minutes or so. and i think what we'll hear them talk about is what you're seeing on your screen here. now, this is a large crane that we've seen come in on a barge in the last hour or so. we knew that the expectation was they would need to use one of these large cranes in order to lift the fuselage of the airplane out of the water. here, along with the wreckage of the helicopter as well. and so we expect to get an update on when that process might get underway.

these are two very, very different crashes that happened for very different reasons in washington at national airport, what you had is a situation that appears that a plane was hit by something, and at that point, the pilots had no ability to do anything about that. that plane went down the examination. there is going to be why the helicopter didn't see them. whether there's enough separation between planes and there's a lot of stuff, all of which will be investigated and will be changed. the beauty of america is we don't typically have the same plane accident twice, so it will be fixed, which is why lots of people got on airplanes today and it will be fine. this is a very different situation. the visibility is very low and when you are trained as a pilot, i often tell people this you can train somebody to fly a plane in a matter of a few hours. most pilot training is emergency training, and most of that emergency training is for what happens when you take off and you land. those are the most dangerous parts of flying. you know, when we're landing on a commercial jet, everybody's checking their phone

national airport that night. rachel: madeleine rivera is in washington dc with the details. good morning. er: good morning. several questions about staffing at air traffic control tower at reagan national airport during the time of the crash. the new york times citing interim preliminary faa source and reports an air traffic control supervisor allowed one controller to leave the job early wednesday evening so one person was reportedly doing the job of two people handling air traffic control for helicopters and incoming planes. the faa did not respond to questions about staffing, but the ntsb said interview withs air traffic controllers are being done and they'll look into the history of the air traffic controller who was on duty that night looking into their training and their hiring. salvage crews out on scene today working on getting the aircraft out of the water and at least 41 bodies have been recovered and 28 of whom have been identified. meantime ntsb found the black box recorder from army black hawk and vizly didn't appear the recorder had exterior damage and they feel confident the
