nbc's aaron gilchrist is at reagan washington national airport with more on this. aaron, when are officials expecting to learn some more information about the data recovered from the black boxes, and when are we going to hear about it? >> well, the expectation is that they'll be able to learn more information very soon from all three of the data points, data collection points that they're trying to assess. i do want to mention, though, that we expect a news briefing to start here with dc unified command. the people who are in charge of the search, recovery and salvage operation, that should start in about 20 minutes or so. and i think what we'll hear them talk about is what you're seeing on your screen here. now, this is a large crane that we've seen come in on a barge in the last hour or so. we knew that the expectation was they would need to use one of these large cranes in order to lift the fuselage of the airplane out of the water. here, along with the wreckage of the helicopter as well. and so we expect to get an update on when that process might get underway.

. >> joining me now is nbc's aaron gilchrist at washington national airport in arlington, virginia.th us is msnbc aviation analyst john cox. what's the latest we know on the investigation and this recovery? aaron. >> well, chris, we are watching a very delicate two fold operation happening here on the potomac river behind me. what we've seen so far today, starting at about 10:00 this morning, we've seen two large pieces of debris, the engine from the plane, as well as another part of the plane come out of the water here. this is what the army corps of engineers and the navy supervisor of salvage have really been focused on doing today. and the reason we're seeing so much care taken during this process is because we know that there are still 12 sets of remains that have yet to be recovered. and so as they remove the plane from the water, they're being careful. we did see a blue tent come up. at one point the work stopped. a blue tent was put up on one of the boats in the water here, as well as a black tarp. we were told yesterday that if during the process of salvaging the plane, the

national airport. with the progress now underway. hey there. five days since the potomac plane crash, right by reagan national airport here in washington. take a look at this for the first time. first responders are on the river actively pulling wreckage from american airlines, 5342. that crj 700, that regional jet. earlier this morning, we saw what appeared to be one of the two engines lifted onto a barge. that engines next stop will be a nearby hangar, where the ntsb is going to use it as one of the critical pieces of evidence to figure out what went wrong here. now, first responders and dive crews have been out on the river all weekend long, essentially rehearsing what they're doing now. and remember, as of the last update, there are still victims unaccounted for. so crews have this very, very delicate balance of both removing the wreckage while also trying to recover additional people. now, the recovery operation for the american airlines regional jet is expected to take about three days, three days for them to lift all of the pieces of the plane from the river onto a barge and then get it to that hangar. once they're done with that
