kris sanchez, nbc bay area news. thanks. kris.ry school in sonoma county was forced to close today after extensive vandalism was found inside. so our cameras could only see outside the school this morning. it does not show where the vandalism happened or what it involved, but we did see police carry out what appears to be evidence bags. the school district says it sent a letter to families asking students to stay at home while police investigate, and the damage gets cleaned up. it's not clear if the school will reopen tomorrow. investigators are asking for anyone with information to reach out to the rohnert park police department. oakland police are investigating a serious crash that left a car wrapped around a pole. it happened around four this morning near 54th avenue and international boulevard. we know that the driver was taken to the hospital in critical condition. nbc bay area sky ranger was over the scene just a couple of hours ago, and it captured video of the horrific scene. the cause of the crash still under investigatio

nbc bay area's kris sanchez with more now live for us as this case proceeds. and chris, walk us through what happened this morning in court. all right. i'll have to paint a picture for you, marcus, because no cameras were allowed in the courtroom. but omar torres was in the courtroom briefly this morning. his beard was shaved off, his hair was buzzed off, and he was wearing a brown prison or jail jumpsuit. so that's what he looked like this morning. he was in court to enter a plea to those charges that he faces. he entered a plea of not guilty to those three felony counts of child sexual assault. he is now scheduled to appepear in court april 28th for a preliminary hearing. that's the hearing where a judge determines whether there is enough evidence to move the case forward to trial. now, this is torres. in a prior court appearance in november, he requested to be released on bail, but the judge said he continued to be a danger to the community, especially to minors, and denied bail, so torres remains in custody. torres was under investigation for sexual miscon

and kris, this is where protests are planned. yes. and in fact, marcus, the kids here at overfelt high school are planning to participate. they've been organizing on social media for this day without immigrants, and we expect that they will be doing something later on this afternoon. they are joining that national call for boycotts and protests. and they say the trump administration is launching is a war on immigrants. and last night, a protest of a different kind as dozens of people left san jose in a caravan bound for the central valley, where a man is being held by ice. the family of says pena. lopez says that he was picked up by ice agents, beaten up so badly he ended up in the hospital and now he is being detained in mcfarland, near bakersfield. in a statement, i said that he was arrested as part of a targeted enforcement and that he was deported in 2013. but critics say pena lopez is being treated without dignity. we want, you know, full release for eunisses and not only for eunisses, but we also want deportations to stop. in ge

kris. warmer temperatures this week did impact our sierra snowpack. today, scientists conducted their third sierra snow survey this year. researcrchers hiked o phillips station to measure the depth and water content of the snowpack. this helps them determine how much water will melt into our rivers and reservoirs in the spring. scientists say the powerful storms that hit us this month helped boost the snowpack to near normal levels, but recent dry conditions quickly melted the snow, dropping it over 10%. so i'll jump right into the results. our survey today recorded a snow depth of 34in. water content of 13.5in, and the snow water content measurement is 58% of average for this date and 55% of the april 1st average at this location. based on this morning's data from our automated snow sensor network throughout the state's mountains, the statewide snowpack stands at 85% of average. scientists will conduct one more snow survey this year that is scheduled for april 1st. to help us translate thohose numbers is our meteorologist and scientist, jeff ranieri.
