cnn's vanessa yurkevich paula newton, who is in canada. let's start with vanessa first on what we are seeing here and the implications. >> yeah. so this really ignited a trade war between our three major trading partners. we're now seeing tariffs of 25% on imports coming in from canada and mexico. and now 20% total for imports coming in from china. this is going to impact $1.4 trillion worth of goods that come into the u.s. every single year. that's about 40% of all imports that we get every single year. and what do we get from these major trading partners? well, we get oil, food, electronics and cars. we are waiting to hear what mexico is going to do in response. but we know what china is doing in response. they are retaliating with tariffs on their own, hitting agricultural products here in the u.s. on things, a 15% tariff on exports going to china from the u.s., chicken, wheat, corn, cotton, also a 10% tariff on things like soybeans, pork, beef. this is very critical because president trump just yesterday posted on truth social saying t

paula newton for us. thank you so much. and today, president trump declining to rule out whether the u.s. could face a recession this year. there have been red flags in financial markets this week signaling a higher risk of the economy stalling out. economists blame trump's tariff roll outs that could bring inflation and federal job cuts. in an interview with fox business news, the president defended his agenda and the widespread concerns it's created. cnn senior white house producer betsy klein is joining us now. betsy, what did the president have to say? >> yeah, jessica, the president was pressed repeatedly by maria bartiromo in that interview airing this morning on whether he could offer any clarity to business leaders amid all of this uncertainty around tariffs on mexico and canada. and just to take you a little bit through how we got here, the president vowed during the 2024 campaign to place tariffs on mexico and canada and followed up in a tweet promising that just a few weeks after the election, then on february 1s

>> let's go now to cnn's paula newton live in ottawa for reaction. paula, how does carney plan to both navigate the tariff threats from president trump? and he's also keep in mind going to have to be running for prime minister as well. >> absolutely, jessica. >> and that's set to happen. look, he's going to be prime minister in a matter of days. likely there will be an election called in canada in a matter of weeks. a lot to deal with, right? and keep in mind, jessica, this is a rookie politician facing a conservative leader, pierre poilievre, who is a career politician. in the face of all of these tariff threats and more coming from the trump administration. he had a remarkable win. their overwhelming 86%. but more than that, jessica. donald trump has completely refashioned this race before he was inaugurated. pierre poilievre, the conservative leader who is, by the way, hailed by many in maga as a conservative, as a good conservative who's really taking it to the liberals, in their words. but a certain point in time, in the last few months, the cons

cnn's paula newton has the story. >> canada says it is ready to retaliate against those tariffs and says that they will be reciprocal and proportional. $155 billion worth. but at issue now is what canada says is an effort at the border to do what the american president wants, and that is to stem the curve of fentanyl, but also migrants. but what's really happening here is donald trump has decided that he has no use for the canadian economy, and the canadian government has gotten that message loud and clear. the government here is deciding that they need to stand up to the american president. they are warning canadians that this will hurt the canadian economy and likely pull it into a recession. but they say they are ready to make deals with other countries, look for other trading partners. but most of all, try and convince americans. and clearly american consumers, american republican lawmakers, that this is a relationship that should not be broken and that, in fact, americans gain as much as canadians from continuing with this trade relationship. at this point in time, though, canadian

our paula newton reports. >> canada will have a new prime minister in the coming days.will find out who that will be on sunday night, when the liberal party of canada elects its new leader and justin trudeau's replacement. now the frontrunners are mark carney, a former bank of canada and bank of england governor but a political novice. and the other frontrunner, chrystia freeland, trudeau's former deputy prime minister and a longtime cabinet minister for trudeau. now top of mind for the party faithful will be who they choose as that new liberal leader in terms of who is the best candidate to handle the challenge of a new donald trump administration and its near daily demands on canada's economy. now the winner, though, may not be prime minister for long, an election would be called in canada within a matter of days or weeks. now, before donald trump set off a tariff war. justin trudeau's liberals actually seem poised very close to losing any kind of a national election. the conservative party was way out in front in the polls, but before donald trump was inaugurated, th

our correspondent paula newton is in ottawa for us. aula, canada is the top trading partner with the united states. how are these new tariffs imposed by the trump administration being viewed there? >> as an existential threat. and that comes from the government itself? wolf. now, we want to say canada said it was ready. and at midnight, in fact, 1201. it started to impose retaliatory tariffs. so that's 25% on 30 billion canadian right now. what does that involve? wolf meat and vegetables, some dairy products. key here though, wolf, is that many provinces, including the largest ontario, beginning to take u.s. alcohol off of its shelves, no longer willing to sell u.s. alcohol in canada. a lot of provinces are going to be signing up to that. right now, we are waiting for more retaliatory moves. we're expecting a press conference from prime minister trudeau in about half an hour. >> we'll see what he has to say. paula, valeria and mark to all of you. thank you very much, pamela. >> all right, wolf, let's continue this conversation. joining

's joining us from ottawa. cnn white house reporter alayna treene. paula, i've covered u.s. canadian relations for many, many years. i grew up in buffalo, new york, right on the border with canada. our family used to go to canada, to ontario, crystal beach every summer. we had a home there. so i spent a lot of time growing up effectively in canada. i have never seen this u.s. canadian relationship deteriorate as seriously as it has right now. the prime minister of canada saying the u.s. has declared a trade war against canada. have you ever seen this u.s. canadian relationship as as bad as it is right now? >> absolutely not. >> wolf. >> and i echo, you know, your thoughts in my entire lifetime, wolf, in terms of what you speak and that that very close friendship between americans and canadians, i have never seen anti-americanism reach this height in my entire lifetime. and i want to note, wolf, that that was the prime minister, the man who will not be prime minister much longer, probab

paula newton as always. great reporting. thanks so much. joining me now is ontario premier doug ford. sir appreciate your time. your reaction i guess to start with this 30 day reprieve on auto tariffs that are compliant with that trade deal that we were just hearing about the usmca. >> well, first of all, thanks for having me on, phil. and i just want to emphasize that canadians love americans. they love the u.s. there's one person that's causing this problem, and that's president trump. you know, all this gives us is uncertainty again. and in the u.s., the american workers, the hard working people on the assembly lines, if this proceeds on april the 2nd, i'll guarantee you assembly lines will shut down on both sides of the border, costing american workers and canadian workers their job manufacturing facilities will shut down, inflation will happen, and gas prices are going to go up. and that's opposite of what president trump has a mandate. he said he was going to create more jobs, lower inflation. while he never thought this out properly
