the judge, trina thompson, sentenced him to a 12-year split sentence. he will serve the remainder on house arrest. once the ankle monitor comes off, he will have probation. a maskless almena walked into the building. he's lost a considerable amount of weight. as part of the plea bargain, he pleaded guilty to 36 counts of involuntary manslaughter. because of time already served in jail, almena's not going to be required to serve any more time in prison. family members of the 36 people who died in the fire tuned in from their homes and deliver there had powerful victim statements virtually. michela gregory mentioned that it looked like almena was dozing off and not paying attention. judge trina thompson also noticed that he was nodding off and his actions were jerky. she ultimately determined he was okay. i spoke to one woman over the phone who lost their daughter. this is what she had to say about almena's behavior today. >> and it seems as if derick almena is falling asleep. is he on drugs? is he even aware of what we are saying? he doesn't seem to be.
