there's one good stoody on the affect of food labeling. starbucks sponsored a high quality study that found that with calorie labeling on their food, consumers bought 14 prs fewer calories. that's something that will prevent obesity. in a couple of years, we'll see that menu labeling everywhere. there's one other important aspect of health reform, which is a couple of billion a year will be devoted to prevention activities to help prevent disease from occurring we don't need reform, we need money. it has a long catch up period because it has been starved. >> you mentioned new york city. the cspi put out a report talking about new york city passing a food safety letter grade for restaurants is there evidence to show that people make better choices and does it affect the bottom line for people running the restaurant? los angeles start the movement by which a letter grade was given. an a for the clean ones, b, and f for the one that's need to close down. in l.a., you see the a or the b in the window. that has been a broom to la diners. new yo

labels. warning labels are not going to solve the problem but presumably would reduce consumption by several percent and everything helps. what really would solve the problem is to change the legal status of sugar and high fructose corn syrup. these substances are generally recognizes as safe or gras in the lingo of the fda. everybody knew that sugar is safe. it's on our table. we put a little of it in our coffee or cereal or whatever. and salt was safe. generally recognized as safe. and the source of trans fat was generally recognized as safe and those turned out to be the three biggest killers in our food supply. we wanted the fda to change the regulation so that sugar would be brought down to a safe level in our food supply. it's generally recognized as safe based on the foods in which it's used. so our petition was actually fairly complicated and it asked the fda to restrict the sugar content of soft drinks to roughly a fourth of the current levels. and we recommended that the fda come up

menu labeling.everyone says, let everyone know what they are eating so you can decide for yourself. let's look at menu labeling. i like this one. here is the adult menu labeling study in new york city. a historical, cross-sectional study. we had data before labeling and after. what happened? nothing. nothing happened. mean calories did not change. they went up. three major changes showed very small decreases. 15% of the respondents reported using the caloric information, and those that did purchase 106 fewer calories than those that did not, but that is all most none of them, because when you go into a fast food restaurant, you were going for taste, and they say so. they may say they're going in for salad, but they buy the burger and fries. and there is a reason for that. children. 349 children and adolescents, most accompanied by their parents, and most from racial minority groups, no significant differences in calories purchased before after labeling. 35% ate fast food six or more times per week.
