now lou gehrig developed als at the peak of his career. he had been an outstanding hitter for many seasons, .330, .-- .350 batting average. and he first noticed the disorder when he noticed that his swing was not as sharp as it used to be. a terrific hitter. he noticed all of a sudden that while he was seeing the ball perfectly well he wasn't getting his bat around fast enough to really meet it effectively. and i think it's wonderful that we have griffen and peter here because these are the lou gehrigs of our round table. >> rose: they're athletes. >> they're fantastic athletes. they're extremely skilled. griffen is an outstanding athlete in many categories. now an outstanding javelin thrower, and he first noticed his difficulty which is sma in the course of seeing and an interference with his athletic performance. and his mother beth is with us. and she can actually describe the early evidence that he had this disease. with peter who is a phenomenal baseball player, comparable in many ways to lou gehrig, he also noticed it in his athletic

lou gehrig's father was an alcoholic, and gehrig learned very early in life that he had to take caredren of alcoholics often do. and that then became his pattern until he could no longer drag himself around the baseball diamond because of the als, which in north america, of course, is known as lou gehrig's disease. >> can you talk about children, when it comes to this? and then expand, because, gabor, a few weeks ago we were talking about addictions, and that's both, what, heroin addiction, but expanding it to other addictions, as well, and the role of childhood. and in doing this, though you talked about it before, talk about your own. >> well, again, in the book when the body says no, i give the example of my visiting my mother one day in a nursing home. my mother had muscular dystrophy, which is a degenerative disease of the muscles. it's hereditary, runs in our family. and so, she could no longer walk, get out of bed, even feed herself very well, so she was in a nursing home, mentally completely with it and emotionally very strong. so i'm walking down the hall of the nursing home

. >> a lot of people know als as the lou gehrig disease, a major sports figure who was diagnosed with the disease. and then two weeks ago there was some news that came out that said maybe he didn't have the disease. what is the update on that? >> he did indeed have the disease. some of the questions arose during the controversy about concussions and brain injuries with sports figures and there have been questions about lou gehrig but he did have als, yes. >> how present lent is the -- prevalent is the disease? >> about 5,000 people will be diagnosed this year. at any given time 30,000 people are living with als. as sean said, people are diagnosed every 90 minutes. and every 90 minutes someone passes away from als. any one of the problems is that it is a fatal disease. so at any one time we don't have a huge number of people living with the disease and that's part of the reason why it's a little bit difficult, it's challenging to get information out and to raise funds because we don't have that huge population at any given time. >> i do hope that family and friends will come out this s
