we were asked to say a few words about why origami and why trees. i will turn it over to my sister. >> the inspiration for the origami crane, the cream is a symbol of water life and happiness in japan -- the crane is a symbol of water life and happiness in japan. when a woman was dying of leukemia after the bomb dropped in hiroshima, she created the crane as a symbol of peace. the symbol has resonated with so many people. we've got a lot of people to come in and write wishes and put them on the crane. there are over 7000 cranes on the tree, 13,000 stars to add some more sparkle and help with the wishes up to the heavens. so, we are really grateful we have the ability to create this gift for the city of san francisco. we would like to thank everybody who helped us. there are some many people. a lot of kids in the city of san francisco. that is pretty much it. thank you. thank you for coming. millie. the ancient art of origami. >> isn't folding cranes about healing? >> it's more about kind of being in tune with yourself. >> what have you learned folding cranes? >> i've learned a lot of patience. >> shiloh was serving time for sex crimes at the orange county jail in southern california. >> i made exactly 1,000 of these. i had a whole little plastic bag, probably about like that big. it was just filled. >> we met brian crist at the maricopa county jail in phoenix shortly before his conviction on a murder charge. >> origami, that's my getaway. i have a bird that flies and a frog that jumps. the champ. front flip. put him in the olympics, man. >> it's really striking and poignant to see inmates who oftentimes are in for incredibly violent crimes sitting there delicately folding this paper over hours into frogs and elephants and that kind of thing. and it really does seem to calm their nerves and almost transform them. >> nobody had a menagerie to match that of philip stroud, who was serving three life sentences for murder at the wabash valley correct

and every year we get messages from all over the country and all over the world that are put on origamis>> there are many cities that have holiday trees, but no one has the tree of hope. it was started by an organization and now i will have the chance to introduce you to that organization's founder and executive director. who failed to put this in the proper amount of type here. no little things happen. the sound is better, i think that you can hear and i just have to go slowly, they told me, it is my pleasure to introduce the executive director of the rainbow world fund. this organization creates this holiday tree now, this is the 7th year. let's hear for that, 7 years of anything is a long time [ applause ] rainbow world fund was founded 12 years ago, the concept and wanted to think locally but he wanted to act globally. and indeed, he has figured out a way to strengthen the lgbt community by reaching out to the world on their behalf. rainbow world funds a powerful force, compassion, concern, rainbow world fund helps others by promoting philanthropy on cross the world and they have dis
