washington lived for eight years while president and first lady in philadelphia, philadelphia was the national capital in the federal period from for ten years. but they also had slaves. we know that he was from mt. vernon and had a plantation. i wasn't aware before i came and worked at the historical society, that he brought the slaves up here. pennsylvania had a law, after six months your slaves would automatically be emancipated and george washington and mrs. washington would rotate the slaves back to mt. vernon every six months to avoid the law. it wasn't illegal what they did but they did it to avoid the slaves being emancipated. when he found the remains of the president's house and wanted to create historical documentation, you had two groups, one group wanted it to just be george washington lived here, isn't that wonderful. and you have another group that says we want to tell the story of the enslaved people who lived here as well. and it was very contentious a few years ago and they came up with a compromise, i'm not sure whether either side is totally happy. as a tour guide

breaking news in west philadelphia. two police officers hurt after a suspected drunk driver cashed into their police wagon. nbc's drew smith live at the scene. drew, what's happening now. >> good morning. accident investigators are still working this scene. you can see there are three cars out here. that's what was involved in this about an hour and a half ago at the corner of 52nd and chestnut street in west philadelphia. the suv, police tell us, was driven by a drunk driver who smashed spot back of a police wagon heading south on 52nd. that sent off a chain reaction crash which then pushed the police wagon into one of the police cruisers that you see here. we're told that the driver was suspected of being under the influence, was taken to mercy hospital. he had minor injuries. two of the officers in the wagon also had minor injuries. they are currently at presbyterian hospital. the officer in the third car you see here was not injured. they have been investigating this since about 4:30 this morning. we're told charges

two of the officers, one including a philadelphia police officer, and retired philadelphia police officer currently working for university of pennsylvania are recovering here at penn presbyterian. both in stable condition. we've also learned one person the gunman encountered in his rampage is in critical condition. now we know the dead gunman was intentionally targeting police and corrections officers, based on evidentiary covered overnight. philadelphia police commissioner ross says sergeant sylvia young, 19 year veteran is recovering. a female has died, four others shot are recovering. commissioner ross says sergeant young was shot in the arm. her bulletproof vest also hit near 52nd and sansom. >> that male did not say anything to her. he fired multiple shots. she was actually struck multiple times in the left arm. we believe there were rounds that struck her vest. fortunately she's talking and going to be okay. >> reporter: philadelphia police spotted the gunman, chased him eastbound on sansom street, from the first scene, he fired into a bar, striking a security guard in the leg, then
