jennifer whalen has the details in tonight's medical minute. more americans are taking dietary supplements and according to a new study by federal health experts many of them are ending up in the emergency department as a result. the study was a collaboration between the centers for disease control and prevention and the food and drug administration. "we found that over a quarter of them were young adults. these are people aged 20 to 34. these people were using supplements for weight loss or energy. over a fifth were young children, that's 20 percent that had gotten into supplements intended for somebody else." but the nutritional insists the majority of their products are safe and the study's results are being overblown. "the headline, 23,000 emergency room visits every supplements. is like wow, that sounds like a lot. but relatively speaking it's less than 5 percent of all emergency room visits." dr. geller advises everyone to take precautions with these products. jennifer whalen ( way-lin) has the health minute " " eat out. many chain restaurants are posting the calorie counts on their menus, before it becomes a federal w this year. but if you think that eating at a non-chain is healthier... that may not always be the case. researchers sampled dishes in restaurants in boston, san francisco and little rock. they found that the as calorie-laden as chain restaurants. however, you might not know that because the calories aren't always on the menu. according to their research, the average dinner at a non-chain restaurant had about 12-hundred calories. while that may be comparable to a chain restaurant, it's still about half the recommended amount of calories for an adult. the worst offenders, american, italian and chinese restaurants tended to pile on the calories... while greek, vietnamese and mexican tended to have the least amount. the study's authors recommend eating in moderation, and making healthy choices like ordering for half- portions or getting dressing on the side. the results were publhed this we
