i want to go now to our cnn's chief law enforcement and intelligence analyst, john miller. also, brianna fox, professor of criminology at the university of south florida and a former fbi special agent, also retired new york police captain john monahan. john miller, what are your sources telling you tonight about the suspect and the investigation? >> well, the picture that is emerging is becoming a richer one. you know, this is a young man who came from a life of privilege and wealth and from a family that operated businesses that were successful who went to upenn and achieved a degree and then a master's degree and engineering, who lived for a time with friends in hawaii. in other words anderson, you know, for your experience in mine, in these cases he's not your average active shooter or a serial killer or political operative. he's a little bit different but he did seem to have this obsession about a health care industry that was getting too large, too powerful, and too greedy, which led him to strike out. let me tee up the question, though. he murders the head of the large

but john miller, you've been doing some reporting. what can you tell us? >> well, we've been working with the name for some time to develop background on this individual the individual who's in custody is ryan wesley, ralph he born in 1966. he is 58-years-old. he has been living in hawaii. he is construction worker in north carolina. when you look at his background on the criminal side, he has what appears to be eight arrests mostly for minor offenses but in his social media, he goes deep into his his self-proclaimed involvement in the conflict in ukraine. his efforts to recruit soldiers and bring them into the country his claims that he has been there possibly as a fighter so they are looking and digging deeper into his background. and of course, one of the things they are looking at is what is the motive? and what was the purpose of not only this alleged attempt to assassinate former president trump, but also to record it on a gopro camera if not stream is for what purpose is it propaganda? does it have to do with one of these issues or conflicts he's be

also, cnn chief, law enforcement and intelligence analyst john miller. john, what's the latest you're hearing from sources about where things where the investigation stands? >> well, the breakthroughs, of course, today were the fingerprint and the gun match, because the gun is with him in pennsylvania. so that puts his fingerprints, that gun, both in pennsylvania and at the scene of the murder. according to police. the next piece that has to come on the forensic side would be the dna matches. they extracted dna from the phone. does it match? they extracted dna from the water bottle, which, presumably he drank from. does it match? dna is very strong evidence. the third piece is they're making a movie. i mean, they're really retracing his his every step. during his time in new york city and beyond so that they can get to a place where a jury will see. first he went there, then he did this, then he went there. and a lot of it is going to be on video. when you consider the combination of forensic evidence, scientific evidence and video evidence, they are prep

cnn chief law enforcement and intelligence analyst john miller joins us now this is big piece of evidence in this investigation, john. >> well, it's a turning point. you know, we have been asking the metaphoric question, you know who is the man behind the mask at least we don't know who is the man behind the mask, but we see the face behind the mask now. and, you know, police worked with these images. this is at a at a youth hostel, which is on the upper west side they were they were they were there yesterday. last night actually searching a room that they believe the gunman stayed in they believe this is a picture of him he kept the jacket on and the hood up and the mask up almost at all times according to people in that hostel. but there was this moment at the front desk in the lobby where the mask came down, and you see that smile. and this is so far the only image of his face without a mask. the best image police have. and what they said is, even though it's not quality, where you would generate a facial recognition image or something that would bring you to a mug shot if he had a rec

i want to go straight to cnn, chief law enforcement and intelligence analyst john miller john, we i dot to take us through a little bit of what we know so far is really forces encountered. a man believed to be, i guess sinwar during routine military operations they encounter three militants near a building and gaza and engage with them troops found a body resembling sinwar's and alerted senior commanders and the israeli military and intelligence services are now essentially trying to do the work of identifying the body through dna your sense of things right now. i mean, obviously this downgrades hamas's abilities and a major way. >> well, it does. and remember its a pathway that started with the israeli assassination of haniah, who was the political leader followed by muhammad deif, who was another leader. and that caused sinwar to move up into both of those positions. and now sinwar, so you see a steady degradation of hamas leadership right now, if you had to look and say who's next, what's next, it could be sinwar's brother muhammad, who right now is in charge of the qassam brigades.

>>> with us now is john miller, cnn law enforcement analyst, and john, you were just hearing from ed quoting your new reporting on this. what more are you learning about a possible motive here? >> well, there's an indicator which is on the rifle, the words free palestine was written. we have seen writing on the rifle before in some of these other digits. so there is an indicator this is someone who studied prior shootings. we saw it in the buffalo shooting in the supermarket and the new zealand shooting in the mosque where the rifle kind of becomes the communique, but we don't really know if that is the full breadth of the motive. that's why federal authorities were executing search warrants last night at the home looking for computers, any written documents, thumb drives, social media, online. they're really peeling back through the identity of this person. now we know she's a 37-year-old woman. we know they have her name, but we also know that her identity may have crossed with other identities at different times. so they're trying to sort through what is the back story here, and i
