they have been running between lafayette and orinda. if you live in walnut creek, you're trying to get into san francisco and b.a.r.t. is your normal way of getting in, it is up and running and it's a normal tuesday morning right after new year's eve. this is after b.a.r.t. spent yesterday and overnight trying to repair the tracks, which they successfully were able to do. they had to use a crane to get the two derailed cars on the rails, back on the rails so they could be towed out of service. those two cars were on an eastbound yellow train along highway 24. this happened a little after 9:00 yesterday morning. at least one of the car's undercarriage also caught fire. all of the passengers and employees were able to get off safely. they were escorted on foot back here to orinda b.a.r.t. behind me. nine riders were taken to the hospital to be evaluated and in some cases treated for minor injuries. >> bob, at this point do we know why the train derailed? >> reporter: we just spoke with jim allison and we'll have some sound with him in abo

in orinda, pete suratos nbc bay area news. new at 11. it's official the santa clara county school board has appointed an interim superintendent during a closed session tonight. the board named charles hinman as the interim superintendent. he's replacing this woman, mary ann dewane, who was removed without cause. two weeks ago. the board has yet to give a reason for her firing, but the move does come a few months after our nbc bay area investigation. we first investigated complaints that the office of education misused some federal head start funds while dewane was in charge. today, a judge denied dugan's request to get her job back, stating that the board had the authority to terminate her. they want him to resign. that's the call from san jose's mayor and the city council to councilman omar torres. torres is facing a sexual misconduct investigation. mayor matt mahan saying today while torres hasn't been charged, the councilman has lost the faith of his colleagues and his constituents to do the job. here's nbc bay area's audrey asistio.

abc seven news reporter lena howland in orinda with the latest. and are you seeing the trains moving again? lena >> a little too early for us to hear those trains running just yet at the orinda station. but just 30 minutes ago, bart confirmed with us that they will be running normal service through this station. and that's between rock ridge and the walnut creek stations. now, this , of course, comes after crews worked well into the night to make repairs and also do some inspections. a giant crane was even brought in last night to lift the derailed bart car back up onto the tracks, which took hours to pull off. bart says damage to the track is not extensive, but this is something that cut off all train service between rock ridge and walnut creek, forcing passengers to use a bus bridge, passenger cars say the train stopped twice and then moved backwards as it derailed. then a mad dash to evacuate as the car filled with smoke. somebody behind us was like, just jump, just jump. >> so we just jumped in the outside like like mission impossible almost.

here at the orinda station.that things are back to normal and they were able to get that first train running on this line again just before 5:00 a.m. it is still early this morning though, so not seeing too many people at this station yet. eager to hear what they are saying as they try get back to the regular workday that is in front of them. now we should point out that we are only about a half mile away from where this all happened and of course the investigation is still ongoing. no clear sign of what the cause is yet. that is something that b.a.r.t. reiterated but they did explain that usually the operations control center can move tracks remotely and yesterday, it was not able to do so. so take a look at the aftermath of an antioch bound b.a.r.t. train derailing yesterday. passengers say the train came to an abrupt stop and they heard pops and then saw smoke and flames shooting up from the train forcing passengers to scramble to safety. >> we all got up and run to go to the next car to at least run. and so
