on abortion.
she never did, but she stopped
talking about it.
in her diaries i found something
quite extraordinary, which is,
in her diaries in early 1980,
there were four pages of loose
paper folded over and tucked in.
it was essentially a letter she
wrote herself trying to figure
out what did she think about
abortion.
she knew she would be asked in
the 1980 presidential campaign
and she wanted to know what she
thought.
it is a very thoughtful,
poignant letter.
and she concludes that she
supports abortion rights, and
she concludes that for an
interesting reason.
it's because of her experience
with the death of her daughter,
robin.
robin died in 1953 of leukemia.
