francisco, gavin newsom ordered
them to issue marriage licenses
to same-sex couples.
six months later, they
invalidated same-sex unions.
four years later, the same state
supreme court overturned
california's ban on same-sex
marriage.
that ruling was short lived as
voters passed proposition 8.
