a prevention-prepared community is a group of concerned citizens that come together and meet, and they all have the same focus around substance abuse prevention. any community can decide it is time to make the change, and let's really try to get... let's try to rally around and energize our neighbors to address this before we have the accidents, before we have the traffic crashes, before we lose more young people to substance abuse and all the things that come with that. the coalition is willing to come together and go through training together to make sure that they are looking at the data and the information about their community and assessing it in the correct way. and then coming up with a plan or a project that addresses their needs. i really like the idea of building the positive. it is sort of like building health instead of treating a disease. some of the specific challenges at a coalition level or a community level: engaging the key leaders, engaging the grandparents, parents of kids, and all of the sectors. bringing them in and then giving each of them a role to play and keep

i'm a retired physician who served this community for over 35 years and i'm a member of physicians organizingcommittee. i referred many patients to st. luke's back when it was a full complement of services and was licensed for 227 beds. as the current census results from a decade of dismantling to the point where cpmc's planned hospital is a mere 80 beds, there are no fewer people living in the south market area than 10 years ago. they still suffer heart attacks, g.i. bleeds, strokes and severe asthma attacks. this is 2 1/2 times likely to die in the first year there as babies in the rest of the city. the hospital cares for patient occupations with a high incidence of work-related injuries, cooks, landscapers, truck drivers, warehouse workers. yet, the workmen's comp contract was not renewed. the clinic doctor was laid off, the occupational and hand therapy services were closed. there was not even a casting room anymore for broken bones. the planning commission must ensure that these services are restored. bay view hunters point accounts for more children than any other zip code. the mission

a community school. every school has a full range the services. the district can't do it alone. school is center of community and really owned as a place by the community. i had i wonderful, i think we can do that. in great britain, they are going to have all community schools. it's what my colleague, jim dierck, is doing. we need to turn every school into a community school. i had a fabulous opportunity to visit this school. it's for kids who have failed in every way. it's colead by the cb on. they do the counseling. vocational work. the district is the class teaching. they have somebody at their side all the time to help with the needs of the student and the principle and cbo get up and meet every morning. they were total partners in making this a community school. then i will be through. i had the opportunity to go to another school at 9 o'clock at night where i thought it was going to be closed. i walk into the school in upper manhattan and it is lit up like a christmas tree. we have to light up every school. it changed the whole neighborhood. it was a beacon of wonderfulness

we have a positive relationship with the community. whether it's through a contract or not and utilize that relationship and help plan this with us. with the colin strategy. lanny homes called in and called in the relationships with our community providers. we wound up having a call in with the providers. we focussed on youth already there and needed these connections and engagements with service providers. you are sitting in juvenile hall. you are upset about getting blamed and not having enough time with your family, the probation officer. not knowing. but figuring you might get released. you are called in and there are 30 folks sitting there are for you. opening their doors to you with a whole wide array of services that you can latch on to. we have had 3 of these sessions and spend a whole morning and take units by units into the auditorium. and then they are provided with the list of all of the agency who were there. and we incorporate that into the release plan. it's a plan in the works. i notice one the areas where it's working?
