about aaron's progress so far.on and his family made their way back to the place where it all startedthe finish line where aaron was wounded by one of the twin bombs while he waited for his mom to finish the race. aaron's color was good and he was in good spiritsshowing off a few of his new souvineres. but, as difficult as it was, it was important for aaron and his family to go back to where the bombs went off. it was a very emotional, moving time and for some people it was important for closure. gay gerlack is a long time family friend and the news of aaron's release from the hospital was a relief for her and others close to the family. gay says the 11 year old has been in the thoughts of martinez residents since the word got out about his injuries. i think, right now, one of the biggest issues for aaron is how am i going to get all of these cards and presents that people have sent me back home? aaron even got up to take a few steps. gay says everyone has been pulling for him. he was overwhelmed that letters and g

aaron was injured while watching his mother finish the race. aaron's mother posted on facebook, that her son is almost completely free of most of the medical tubes, and his neck brace has been removed. while he is improving, it is still not known how long aaron will remain in the hospital. more chilling video coming out of the city of west, in texas, as rescue workers continue to search for survivors of the deadly fertilzer plant explosion. the town's mayor says, the death toll from last night's blast has risen to 35. with more than 160 people hurt. after the explosion, most of the town was evacuated, and as you can see. not much left of the area near the fertilizer plan. tonight. an apartment complex destroyed, houses left in ruins, and roofs ripped apart. the blast was so large, it registered as a 2- point 1- magnitude seismic event tonight rescue crews remain hopeful. calling their work a "search and rescue operation" looking for survivors of last nights blast. >> burglaries on the rise in concord. police say, there have been 24 residential,

to raise money for 11-year-old aaron hern and his family. aaron's leg was hit by a bomb shrapnel at the boston marathon finish line. his mother said he was back in surgery today and doctors are optimistic but he has a fever and the family is worried about infection. their friends and neighbors in martinez don't want them to worry about anything else. >> i just reached out to my community and said, you know, we have to help them. >> reporter: rocks on main raised $5,000 last night with donations still coming in. this weekend seven family owned restaurants will continue the effort. >> it's a small family oriented town. >> reporter: the herns are all about family. both teach at alhambra high where fundraisers are being organized as well as at martinez junior high where aaron goes to school. instead of asking how did this happen, people in this town are asking, how can i help? >> it's just about doing, right, not just about sitting feeling helpless. >> reporter: nicole degeorgio lives next door to the herns. >> this is a family that has given an

the hearn family was standing near the finish line when the bombs exploded and tonight young aaron hearn is in the hospital with shrapnel injuries. >> the shrapnel hit him in the thigh. >> gay knows a martinez family who is in a boston hospital tonight caring for their son. he was injured by shrapnel in the marathon bombing. >> they were at the finish line to congratulate katherine. so they were just right there in the center of it. >> reporter: she spent hours on line and on the phone today tracking down information about the hearn family. katherine hearn was running the marathon while family and friends from martinez cheered her on. this is hearn's facebook picture. but her celebration turned into an emergency when shrapnel from one explosion injured her son aaron hearn. the young boy was rushed to the hospital and into surgery with a leg injury. >> aaron was out of surgery, no major vessels were injured and the news that they would have to be there for a while yet. >> late tonight katherine hearn sent this update saying aaron is in the icu but stable. one laceration on his upper left

. >> reporter: we are talking about 12-year-old aaron hern. he is still in intensive care at boston children's hospital under sedation and his mother posted on facebook last night that he is doing all right relatively speaking. she says the 12-year-old mass opened his eyes a couple of times and has communicated with nods and that he is okay and comfortable but getting frustrated with his lack of ability to communicate so they are trying to keep him calm and rested. he is due for another surgery today. aaron had gone to boston with his family to cheer on his mom catherine as she ran the marathon and he has shrapnel wounds to his legs, one severe requiring more surgery possibly eventually skin grafts. people here in the bay area are rallying around aaron and his family. rocks on maine a restaurant here in martinez hosted a special dinner with all proceeds going to the hens and they say they will do this every tuesday until the family comes home with all proceeds going to the herns. >> everything is volunteer and donated. >> reporter: organizeers

the trauma surgeon successfully closed aaron's wounds a matter of hours ago. 11 year old aaron hern was hit with shrapnel when the bombs went off at the end of the boston marathon. he had been waiting with his father and sister for his mother to finish. his father described his injuries on his son's leg as looking like a war wound. well they likely look better than that tonight. the successful surgery means aaron will not need skin grafts. he also hasn't been able to talk because of the breathing tube that is being used. his mother told us earlier today that doctors were hoping to take that out. at this point though that hasn't happened. when aaron does occasionally wake up he uses a touchpad to write what he is thinking. he is starting to remember things as well. he told his mom he was worried about a boy who was next to him before the blasts and his new friend david. david is fine. again though pam, the good news is that surgery went well. now there is a hope that he doesn't have to deal with any infections. there's also a hope that the fever's he's been having will stop. >> pam: and
