we understand the potential target that of ongoing raid at this point was a man named abdelhamid abaaoud, the alleged mastermind of the attacks which happened on friday. at this point, we know two people inside that apartment are dead. again, five people arrested, three police officers injured. it's unclear, though, if abaaoud was inside that apartment and if he was, if he is one of the fatalities. we know that a woman suicide bomber is the other fatality. she had a vest which she exploded. that brings us up to date at this point. i want to bring in now jim cavanaugh, former atf special agent in charge and law enforcement analyst. jim, you've been with us throughout the night and watched this unfold. as i understand it, at this point, this is still ongoing. they believe there's still one or two other people that are inside that apartment. we know that there was a woman who blew herself up inside there. give me an idea at this point what these french forces are dealing with in terms of a potential negotiation if any. >> if you can get whoever's alive in there to talk with the police negot

the french prosecutor now confirming the suspected organizer of the paris attacks, abdelhamid abaaoud is dead. >> he was killed in wednesday's security raids in saint denis. the prosecutor said his body was formally identified using d.n.a. ample. abaaoud was initially believed to be in syria but after the attacks, french investigators realized he had managed to return to europe. adam is live in paris. what can you tell us about the confirmation of abaaoud's death? >> we know the totally blown out apartment was quite destroyed. they used a sophisticated way of getting his fingerprints off that, so may have also been using d.n.a. what we're hearing is that they relied on the sophisticated fingerprinting process. that tells you they could not recognize the bodies in that apartment after this raid. it was a very, very intense operation. it lasted several hours. more than 5,000 rounds were fired, they were explosions. people in the area thought they were under attack before they realized that police were coming into the community. this but ail measures was a successful operation by the sec

this is a little video, as you see here, of the alleged mastermind, abdelhamid abaaoud. that's the man that they believed powe leshlly had intelligence, was inside that apartment in saint-denis, again, a french suburb north of paris. they had hoped he had been inside. at this point we don't know whether or not he was. we do know that two people were killed, two suspects dead from inside that apartment building. five people arrested. a few of which were inside of that apartment building as well. and three police were injured in that, yet to be seen which people were inside that apartment building. one was a female who was wearing a suicide belt that exploded very early on around 4:20, 4:30 this morning in saint-denis there inside that apartment building, setting off gunfire exchange and, of course, this raid continued. it looks now at this hour 10:00 saint-denis time there outside of paris, france, that they are beginning to do some forensic work, that they are setting up a little bit of recovery after this raid went down for hours and hours in the early morning hours. an

and was the primary suspect in all of this abdelhamid abaaoud inside there?ow, we know from residents in this area that this all began at about 4:30 a.m. local time. there were reports of gunfire, of grenades going off. and then at about 7:30 a.m., reports of loud explosions. it's believed that one woman inside that apartment blew herself up. and certainly from what we can see, again, if you look at those windows, all the glass has been blown out. and i don't know if we can even push into the windows, into the rooms. you can see the walls appear to have been blown out. very, very little left inside that apartment other than now those forensic experts. they are going to be combing through, looking for any details, any dna, anything that can net some clues. we know that two people were killed in that raid. another seven people were arrested. but the ringleader or the believed ringleader of all these attacks, the sort of focal point now of this entire investigation, it's not clear if he was inside, if he was still at large. and that, of course, has many resident

but, again, abdelhamid abaaoud slipped away from police. he was not there. is someone who has been behind a series of terrorist operations, leading up, obviously, they believe, to what happened here in paris on friday night. such a story, as somebody who started out as frankly a petty criminal, and somebody who hung out after a short prison stint, with known drug dealers at a local bar in belgium. and i think it's worth noting, as we reported earlier, that one of the eyewitnesses that was interviewed by richard engel said in that actual apartment that they were going to raid, was known to be the apartment of drug dealers in that neighborhood. so all of that sort of ties together as we look at what is happening today and still waiting to hear whether or not abdelhamid abaaoud is indeed someone who is in there. you can just imagine the terror. first of all, the incident at the stadium, which is a short distance away from this very residential neighborhood, near the town square in saint-denis. already so much upset from the suicide bombers who went to the stadi

. >> the big question is where is abdelhamid abaaoud. certainly the police, one would think if he had in fact either been arrested or killed in that operation, then the authorities would be broadcasting that fact. they've been very quiet and so the big question now is whether this raid, which we're told was initiated after intelligence reports were gleaned suggesting that abdelhamid abaaoud was in the apartment in saint denis, whether in fact he was neutralized during that operation. so far, of those who died and were arrested, only one name has been released. french media are reporting that the young woman who blew herself up with an explosive vest was a cousin of abdelhamid abaaoud, which does suggest obviously that we're getting pretty close now and that the police are closing the net. if she was in the apartment, the cousin of this wanted man, however, we don't know whether he was found, obviously, the key next day is going to be the interrogation of those suspects who were captured during the raid and whether the police and intellig

she is said to be the cousin of abdelhamid abaaoud.y traced her to an apartment in north paris, a mixed neighborhood, a poor area, not far from the football stadium where one of the attacks occurred friday night. on the third floor of that apartment building, when the police started to move in, they found unexpected resistance. it didn't mean that they didn't have swat teams there, but both the president of the country and interior minister have characterized it as heavy unexpected resistance, a gun battle that goes on for about seven hours, not continuous, but there are long periods of gunfire in there, some an hour long. the police get in. at one point, a police dog is killed, they enter the apartment, arrest three people. that is when the female suicide bomber sets off her vest. there are mother exchanges of gunfire you hadding grenades. eventually the swat teams take out one other man in the apartment, so two dead in there and three found hiding in the rubble. a total of seven arrests at this point. we are told two were arrested ou
