it took pg&e about an hour to shut off the leak. now that the line is skao you, questions are coming up about why they hit that line. the puc says it is permitted work. but pg&e said the permit starts tomorrow and the street had not been marked indicating where gas lines are located under the street. pg&e also says the gas line in this location is not 24 inches deep. it's more shallow because of what's underground. >> the gas line was buried at 15 inches. the reason it wasn't down to 24 inches was it was protected with a steel plate. it had to go up and over a city facility in this case. and it was protected with a steel plate. furthermore, the contractor was only supposed to cut down through the concrete. the blade was too long, too big. it cut through the concrete and the steel blade. >> you can see crews are working right now to repair the pipe. mason street between superintendenter and geary is closed. crews are expected to be here several hours. and they're work to go restore gas service to people who were affected by this inte

. >>> patti lee has more comments now from pg & e and residents about how the san bruno explosion and aftermath was handled. >> reporter: pg & e workers checked and in some cases double checked homes for potential problems. >> since it happened in the neighborhood it kind of scared us. >> reporter: residents here say they are glad the homeowner who also worked from home happened to leave for lunch when the explosion happened. >> she is shaken up but she's okay. >> reporter: pg & e tells us no one has reported strange odors in this neighborhood in recent months. but fire investigators say the homeowner smelled gas several hours before the fire started. but did not consider it enough of a problem to report it. >> she went out to walk the dog, she came home about 4:00 in the morning. as she was walking up the stairs to her home, she did smell some natural gas. >> she is just darn lucky that she decided to go out to lunch. >> reporter: hugler lives in another part of the apartment complex where six other gas leaks were found sunday night. >> they came over at midnight that night and start

pg&e's contractor will fill the hole this afternoon as paving work and other sidewalk repairs should take about three weeks. neighbors here got a letter from pg&e, telling them to expect about three weeks of construction. this hole may get closed today but neighbors say they hope legislators will close the hole in loop holes in regulations so that a tragedy like this won't happen again. you are seeing people milling about. i saw a spokesperson from jackie spears' office, lots of neighbor whose lost their homes here and we also have the mayor of san bruno, who will be the first to shovel dirt into the crater. reporting live from san bruno, marianne favro, nbc bay area news. >> marianne, thank you very much. pg&e planning for the cooler months ahead, which means an increased demand for gas. pg&e trying to convince state regularitiy regulators that its pressure checking system is safe. pg&e has water tested the lines, but the state wants pg&e to use a so-called spike test instead. that's where pg&e would try out a brief spike in pressure during an eight-hour period. >>> this morning, heartbreaking

iriririririrr >>> in a first of its kind hearing today, pg&e had to prechbtdz about increasing pressure in part of the natural gas system. >> pg&e has been testing strength of pipe lines throughout northern kl cal in response to the san bruno explosion. and we're live in san bruno with more on this for us. >> and pg&e will be soon asking for the permission to restore pressure on a number of lines reduced after san bruno. and today's first public hearing was not about one of those lines but about a compressor station with feeder lines to the bay area. and in february there, was a pressure surge at that station, that compression station requiring a number of tests z now, pg&e wants to restore pressure. but instead of an internal process with a director granting that approval, pg&e had to go through a public hearing with a senior officer in charge of gas stand yairdz presenting evidence and answering questions. this new process was ordered by the cpuc after the san bruno explosion revealed numerous deficiencies in operations. today's hearing showed there were once again problems in the pro

about natural gas? flammable. it goes, boom. it's important to shut this off. we use it for cooking, eating and hot water. there were 40,000 people that called pg and e about their gas. that means they call turned off their gas? did they need to do that? when do you have to? when there is a problem. how long did you think it takes pg and e to get out and turn it back on? 45,000 people. days weeks, may be a month. who has seen this in the streets. a lot of muck is in there is it's full of dirt and weeds you turn it to the right to tighten it and left to loosen it. your home work you have to look at your house, pop open the lid, look in there see what's going on in there it's not nice and clean like this. who has seen this around their house? everybody. each meter has a shut off. you want to find out where your gas meter is. you can keep track of your usage but you will know how to shut it off. here's the shut off. i have some tools up here, you can look at these. any hardware store has these. they fit on this and it allows you to turn off the gas. when we talk about the wheels it's these on top. if you have a broken pipe. they will spin like mad

pg&e story just continues. it doesn't seem to slow down. this afternoon, actually only about an hour ago, was the one-year anniversary and memorial service in san bruno with, you know, bagpiper playing "amazing grace" and a very moving ceremony and speech by the mayor. and, you know, we've come full circle. we're the national transportation safety board a couple weeks ago said that pg&e's line blew up in san bruno last september 9th because the welds in 1956 were done incorrectly, the company didn't have proper records and hadn't done the adequate testing to know what they had down there. just when it looked like that story was kind of being wrapped up and pg&e and state regulators were moving ahead with a lot of reforms and upgrades of the system, there was another explosion in cupertino last week at a condominium complex. 400 homes there. and this was not a large steel transmission line like the line in san bruno. this was a small distribution line made out of plastic. when you look at these gas lines in the state, you have to think of them as like highways. you have freewa
