i want to bring in cnn's becky anderson live in abu dhabi. just a tragedy there. >> reporter: that's right. this is the latest we are getting in to cnn now. hearing from the saudi civil defense that the number of dead is indeed 250 and as many as 450 wounded. saudi authorities telling us the stampede happened in the city of mena. a huge settlement of tents which is the area for visiting pilg m pilgrims. at least 2 million people were expected to attend this year. that doubles the population of mecca. in the past, hajj has been blighted by stampedes and cru crushes. the worst in 1990 when people died in a tunnel leading to mena. this particular day has seen several tragedies in the past. today's ritual is the stoning of the devil symbolizing their rejection of evil. in 1994 and 1998 and in 2004, hundreds of pilgrims were skillkilled in stampedes after event. after 2004, officials installed safety barriers to prevent such accidents in the future. the latest hajj stampede, 350 people were killed on a bridge notorious for bottlenecks in 2006. tha
